Press your Amazon Echo’s physical Microphone on/off button once to turn the microphone back on and clear a solid red light. The red mute indicator should disappear when the microphone is enabled. If Alexa still does not respond, check power and restart the Echo before moving on to network troubleshooting or a reset.

The short version

  • Start with the button: Press the physical Microphone on/off button once to enable the microphone.
  • Check an Echo screen: A red screen bar means the microphones and camera are disabled.
  • Restart when needed: Disconnect the Echo from power and reconnect it if it remains unresponsive.
  • Keep resets last: Reset procedures depend on your model, and a full reset erases information and connections.

Turn the microphone back on

Find the physical Microphone on/off button on your Echo and press it once. This is the direct fix for a solid red mute indicator on Echo speakers with that button, including Echo and Echo Dot. The same microphone control applies with original Alexa and Alexa+.

On an Echo display with a combined microphone and camera disable control, a red screen bar means both are disabled. Press the physical Microphones on/off button again to restore them. If the indicator clears and Alexa responds, you can stop here.

Check power and whether Alexa can hear you

Make sure you are using the power adapter supplied with the Echo. If your speaker has an Action button, press it to test whether the device responds. This checks responsiveness without overriding the microphone mute control.

After enabling the microphone, reduce nearby noise and move the Echo away from walls or other speakers. Say Did you hear me? to check whether Alexa hears you. If it still does not respond, restart the device.

Restart the Echo

Disconnect your Echo or its power adapter from the electrical outlet, then reconnect it. For an Echo display, leave it disconnected for 15 seconds before reconnecting. If your Alexa built-in device uses removable batteries, remove and reinstall those batteries instead.

Check the microphone control again after the restart if the red mute indicator remains. Continue with network or software checks only if the Echo still has another problem after you enable its microphone.

Fix a separate Wi-Fi problem

A solid red light alone indicates microphone mute, so it does not diagnose a Wi-Fi failure. If the Echo also has connectivity trouble, test internet access on another device. Keep the Echo within 30 feet (9 meters) of the router and away from interference.

If other devices also cannot connect, restart your router and disconnect the Echo from power for 30 seconds before reconnecting it. For an internet outage, wait and retry or contact your internet provider. When other devices work, verify the Wi-Fi password and temporarily disconnect some other network devices.

If your router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try the other network. For an Echo managed through the Alexa app, open Alexa, select Devices, select your Echo, then open Device Settings > Change or remove a Wi-Fi network. Choose a previously used network or select Join another Wi-Fi Network, then complete the app’s instructions.

For an Echo with a screen, swipe down from the top and select Settings > Device Options > Network. Enable Wi-Fi, select your network, and follow the displayed instructions. If your network is missing, select refresh; additional network options are under Preferences.

Echo Hub and Echo Show 5 menus may differ during Amazon’s software transition. Follow the network options displayed on your device if its labels differ.

Check for software updates

Once the microphone works and the Echo has internet access, say Check for software updates. A hardware-muted Echo cannot hear that command, so restore microphone operation first.

On an Echo display with Alexa+, select Menu > Settings. With original Alexa, swipe down from the top of the screen and select Settings. Then select About this Device > Check for Software Updates.

These display update steps also cover Echo Spot. Echo Hub and all Echo Show 5 generations may have different menus during the software transition. If your menus differ, use the voice update command once the microphone and internet connection work.

Reset an Echo speaker only after other checks fail

Try a restart before resetting, and match the instructions to your model and generation. Choose the connection-preserving procedure if you want to retain smart-home connections.

Echo 3rd or 4th generation and Echo Dot 3rd through 5th generations: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings. Hold Action for 20 seconds, then wait for the light ring to switch off and back on and repeat setup. Amazon groups these Echo Dot generations under this procedure.

A full factory reset erases information and device connections. For those Echo and Echo Dot models, hold Microphone off and Volume down together for 20 seconds. Wait for the ring to switch off and back on, then set up the device again.

Echo Dot 6th generation: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings. Hold Microphone off and Volume up together for 15 seconds. Wait for the light bar to become orange, then repeat setup.

A full factory reset erases information and connections. On Echo Dot 6th generation, hold Volume down and Microphone off together for 25 seconds. Repeat setup when the light bar becomes orange.

Echo Dot Max: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings. Hold Volume down and Microphones enable/disable together for 15 seconds, then wait for audible confirmation and the indicator to restart. Repeat setup afterward.

A full factory reset erases information and connections. On Echo Dot Max, hold Volume down and Microphones enable/disable together for 25 seconds. Wait for audible confirmation and the indicator restart, then repeat setup.

Echo Pop: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings. Hold Volume down and Volume up together for 15 seconds. Wait for the light bar to switch off and back on, then repeat setup.

A full factory reset erases information and connections. On Echo Pop, hold Volume down and Microphone off together for 25 seconds. Wait for the light bar to switch off and back on, then repeat setup.

Echo Studio from 2019: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings. Hold Action for 20 seconds. Wait for the ring to switch off and back on, then repeat setup.

A full factory reset erases information and connections. On the 2019 Echo Studio, hold Volume down and Microphone enable/disable together for 20 seconds. Wait for the ring to switch off and back on, then repeat setup.

Echo Studio from 2025: Both reset options erase personal information and device settings; the longer reset also erases smart-home connections. Hold Microphone enable/disable and Volume down together for 15 seconds to retain smart-home connections, or 25 seconds to erase them too. Wait for audible confirmation. Amazon also assigns this procedure to Echo Studio with Home Camera from 2026.

Reset an Echo display using its matching controls

Restart an Echo display by disconnecting power for 15 seconds before considering a reset. Use the model-specific menus below for Echo Spot from 2024, Echo Time, and Echo Hub.

A factory reset erases information and connections. For a display covered by the general Echo display procedure, hold Microphone/camera disable and Volume down together until the Amazon logo appears, approximately 15 seconds. Complete the setup instructions displayed on the screen.

A factory reset through Settings also erases information and connections. Swipe down and select Settings > Device Options > About this Device > Reset to Factory Defaults, then select Reset. Complete setup afterward.

The connection-preserving alternative can still erase personal settings. On Echo Show 2nd generation or Echo Show 10, you can instead select Reset to Factory Defaults but retain Smart Home Device Connections to keep those connections. Complete setup afterward.

Echo Spot from 2024: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings, while a full reset also erases connections. With Alexa+, select Menu > Settings; with original Alexa, swipe down and select Settings. Open Device Options > Factory Reset, then select Reset, but Retain Smart Home Device Connections or Reset to Factory Defaults. Scan the setup QR code with your phone and finish setup in Alexa.

Echo Time: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings, while a full reset also erases connections. Swipe down and select Settings > Device Options > Factory Reset, then select Reset, but Retain Smart Home Device Connections or Reset to Factory Defaults. Scan the subsequent QR code with your phone and complete setup in Alexa.

Echo Hub: A connection-preserving reset can erase personal settings, while a full reset also erases connections. With Alexa+, select Menu > Settings; with original Alexa, swipe down and select Settings. Open Device Options > About the Device > Reset to Factory Defaults, then select Reset to Factory Defaults, but retain Smart Home Device Connections or Reset to Factory Defaults. Complete setup afterward.

Hub and Show 5 menu labels may vary during the software transition. If your Show 5 menus differ, use the general display hardware reset procedure above, which erases information and connections.

Set up your Echo again

For Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, and Echo Dot Kids, update the Alexa app through your phone’s app store and connect the Echo to power. Open Alexa, select Devices, then tap the add icon. Select Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more, then complete the guided setup.

For a display that presents setup instructions or a QR code, follow that model’s screen instructions. If a solid red mute indicator is still on afterward, press the physical Microphone on/off button to enable the microphone.
