A laptop microphone that stops working can wreck a call, class, recording, or voice command in seconds. The cause is usually a muted mic, blocked permission, wrong input device, browser setting, Bluetooth connection, or audio driver problem.

Start with the fast checks, then use the section that matches your laptop and the app that cannot hear you.

Start with the obvious microphone checks

This method applies when an external microphone, headset, USB mic, Bluetooth headset, or wireless mic suddenly stops picking up your voice. It also catches simple hardware mute problems before you spend time changing app settings.

Push a wired headset or microphone plug fully into the laptop. For a USB microphone, move it to another USB port and try again.

Check the microphone or headset for a physical mute switch. If the headset has a boom mic, move the boom down toward your mouth because many headsets mute when the boom is upright or away from you.

For a Bluetooth microphone or headset, make sure the device is on, charged, paired, connected, in range, and not connected to another device.

On Dell Latitude laptops and Precision mobile workstations with an F4 microphone mute key, press Fn + F4 to mute or unmute the microphone. Dell notes exceptions are possible, so check your model's manual if the key does nothing. If the F4 microphone light is on, the mic is muted; press the shortcut again so the light turns off. If Fn lock is enabled, press F4 instead.

On Lenovo ThinkPad and some Lenovo laptops, press the F4 microphone mute key. Depending on the hotkey mode, use Fn + F4.

On HP laptops with a microphone mute key or mute light, press the key marked with the microphone mute or restore icon. When the microphone light is on, the mic is off, so press the key until the light turns off.

Allow microphone access in Windows

Use this when Windows detects your microphone, but apps cannot hear you. The steps below are the Windows 11 path; the Windows 10 path follows.

  1. 1.Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. 2.Turn on Microphone access.
  3. 3.Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  4. 4.Turn on the individual app toggle when the Microsoft Store app appears in the list.
  5. 5.Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone for desktop apps.

On Windows 10, select Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone, then turn on Microphone access for this device, Allow apps to access your microphone, and Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.

Pick the right input device on Windows

Windows can listen to the wrong microphone after you plug in a headset, dock, webcam, USB mic, or Bluetooth device. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound.

In Input, go to Choose a device for speaking or recording and select the microphone you want to use. Select the arrow to the right of that device to open its details.

Under Input settings, select Start test, speak normally, select Stop test, then choose Play under Recorded sample. If your voice is too quiet, adjust the Input volume slider.

On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, make sure your mic is picked under Choose your input device, then speak into it and watch Test your microphone to confirm Windows hears you.

Run the Windows input troubleshooter

This fixes Windows input detection problems and common sound issues that block the microphone.

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound.

Scroll to Advanced.

Under Troubleshoot common sound problems, choose Input devices.

Follow the prompts Windows gives you.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, then run the Recording Audio troubleshooter.

For more sound-device options, use All sound devices under Advanced.

Fix app and browser microphone permissions

When the mic works in the system but fails only in a browser, meeting app, or website, check that app's own microphone setting.

  1. 1.In Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera and microphone or Microphone, then set Default behavior to Sites can ask to use your microphone.
  2. 2.For one Chrome site, open the site, select View site information beside the address, choose Site settings, and change Microphone to Allow.
  3. 3.In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Microphone, then make sure the site is allowed.
  4. 4.In Firefox, open Settings > Privacy & Security Permissions and data, go to Permissions, select Settings... next to Microphone, change the website to Allow, then select Save Changes.
  5. 5.In Safari on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Microphone, then choose Allow for the site.

When a site asks for microphone permission, choose Allow this time or Allow while visiting the site. Use Never allow only when you want to block that site.

Choose the microphone inside Zoom Teams or Meet

This fixes cases where your laptop mic works elsewhere, but one calling app is muted or listening to another device.

In Microsoft Teams during a meeting, select the dropdown arrow next to Mic, choose More audio settings, and make sure the correct microphone is selected.

To set the Teams default, open Settings and more > Settings > Devices. Under Audio settings, choose the speaker and microphone Teams should use.

If the Mic icon has a line through it, you are muted in Teams, so select Unmute mic.

In the Teams desktop app, hold Ctrl + Spacebar on Windows or Option + Spacebar on Mac to temporarily unmute when that feature is enabled.

In Zoom Workplace, select your profile picture, open Settings, then choose Audio.

In the Microphone section, select the correct microphone from the drop-down menu, click Test microphone, and adjust Input volume when Automatically adjust microphone volume is not enabled.

In a Zoom meeting, use the Audio icon in the meeting controls to unmute.

To stop joining Zoom meetings muted by default, open Settings > Meetings & webinars and turn off Keep my microphone muted.

In Google Meet, select the arrow next to the microphone icon, then use the microphone row drop-down to choose the right mic.

If the mic bar moves while you speak, Google Meet is receiving audio.

Check Mac microphone permissions and input

On macOS Ventura or later, quit the app first, then open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Turn on access for each app that needs the microphone, reopen the app, and try recording again.

Next, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Input. Select the built-in microphone, USB mic, or external audio interface you want to use, then adjust the input volume slider.

If you use a Mac laptop closed in clamshell mode, open the lid or connect and select an external microphone. Apple turns off the built-in microphone in hardware whenever the lid is closed on supported Mac laptops, including Apple silicon Mac laptops and Intel Mac laptops with the Apple T2 Security Chip.

If the Mac still does not pick up sound, choose the same microphone in the app's own audio settings or switch to an external microphone.

Set Chromebook and Ubuntu microphone access

On a Chromebook, select the time at the bottom right.

Open Settings.

On the left, select Privacy and security > Privacy controls.

Turn on Microphone access.

For Chromebook apps, choose the microphone permission type in Privacy controls and select the apps you want.

For Android apps on a Chromebook, open the Android Preference Center from the Launcher next to the app and change App Permissions.

On Ubuntu, open the Activities overview and start typing Sound.

Click Sound, choose the device you want in Input, speak to confirm the input level indicator responds, then adjust the volume or switch the microphone off and on from that panel.

After changing Chromebook or Ubuntu input settings, reopen the app that could not hear you.

Update Bluetooth drivers and manufacturer software

For a Bluetooth microphone or headset on Windows 11, turn on the device, make it discoverable, then open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn on Bluetooth. Add or select the Bluetooth device, then go to Settings > System > Sound > Input and choose it as the microphone.

Microsoft recommends getting audio drivers through Windows Update first. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart the laptop.

If Windows Update does not help, open Start, type Device Manager, and select Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device, choose Update driver, select Search automatically for drivers, follow the prompts, and restart.

If the microphone still is not detected, use Device Manager again, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device, and select Uninstall device. Restart the PC so Windows automatically reinstalls the audio driver.

For laptop-specific drivers, use the manufacturer's support page for your model: Dell uses www.dell.com/support/drivers, HP uses support.hp.com/us-en/drivers, Lenovo uses pcsupport.lenovo.com, and Surface devices use Microsoft's Surface drivers and firmware page.

If this method fails, check whether your laptop is managed by work or school. An administrator can force microphone access off on managed Windows devices, Chrome browser, or ChromeOS, and users cannot fix that from normal app or browser settings.
