Your Fire TV is back at setup, but the remote won't pair. Start with the batteries and Home button, then work through a restart and the correct remote reset. These first fixes don't require access to Settings.
Try pairing again at the setup screen
Keep your compatible remote within 10 feet (3 m) of Fire TV. Insert the remote's batteries. Then turn on the TV to start automatic pairing.
If setup stays on the pairing screen, hold Home for about 10 seconds, until Press [Play/Pause icon] to start appears. Press Play/Pause to continue setup.
Give the batteries a fresh start
Remove the remote's batteries for 30 seconds. Reinstall them, then hold Home for about 10 seconds to retry pairing.
If pairing fails, install a fresh pair of alkaline batteries. Hold Home again for about 10 seconds. Still stuck? Try restarting Fire TV next.
Restart Fire TV without using Settings
Use this when the remote won't control the pairing screen, including when you're pairing a compatible replacement. You don't need the original remote.
Disconnect Fire TV from power. For a Fire TV Smart TV, leave the TV unplugged for at least 30 seconds.
Reconnect the power. Wait for the remote-detection error to appear. Insert the batteries into the remote to start automatic pairing. If automatic pairing fails, hold Home for 10 seconds.
If a Fire TV Smart TV has power problems, use its supplied power cable. Try another outlet if the power problem continues.
Match a replacement remote to your Fire TV
An incompatible replacement remote won't pair with your Fire TV. Identify your Fire TV model from its product identification, or under Manage Your Content and Devices > Devices in your Amazon account if it's listed there. Check that model against Amazon's remote compatibility table before borrowing or buying a replacement.
Pay particular attention if you have a TV with Fire TV built in. Amazon's Alexa Voice Remote 2024 Release and 3rd Generation compatibility tables do not list Fire TV Smart TVs. Alexa Voice Remote Pro supports many built-in Fire TVs, but excludes Element and Westinghouse Amazon Fire TV Smart TVs.
Enhanced remote compatibility also depends on the TV model. Once you have a compatible replacement, follow the restart-and-pair procedure above.
Reset the remote with the correct button sequence
Use this sequence for Amazon's “most Fire TV remotes” category; Basic Edition and Alexa Voice Remote 1st Generation have separate reset procedures.
- 1.Disconnect Fire TV from power and HDMI for 60 seconds.
- 2.Hold Left, Menu, and Back together for 12 seconds. Release them and wait five seconds.
- 3.Remove the remote's batteries.
- 4.Reconnect Fire TV and wait for the remote-detection error.
- 5.Reinstall the batteries and press Home.
- 6.If pairing still fails, hold Home for 10 seconds.
Let the remote's light narrow down the problem
Low batteries trigger a slow red flash in Amazon's remote troubleshooting mode. Press Alexa Voice to check whether your remote supports this mode. A flashing LED at the top indicates support; not every remote has an LED.
On a supported remote, hold Rewind and Right for three seconds. Press Menu to enter troubleshooting mode. Press any button to see the diagnostic color. For a slow red flash, replace the batteries.
For a fast red flash, reset the remote using its applicable procedure. For an orange light, restart Fire TV using the power-disconnection procedure above. Wait for Cannot detect your remote. Hold Home for 10 seconds.
For a white light, check Fire TV's power connection. If the white light persists, restart Fire TV. A blue light also calls for a restart.
To exit troubleshooting mode, hold Play/Pause and Up for three seconds. Press Menu. Remove the batteries. Reinstall them.
Use another controller to finish pairing
Another working remote or the phone app lets you add a remote through Settings. If you have a working remote, open Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote, then continue with the physical remote's batteries below.
To use a phone instead, install Amazon Fire TV. Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as Fire TV. The app requires shared Wi-Fi; it doesn't provide a universal bypass for a reset Fire TV that hasn't joined your network.
Open Amazon Fire TV and sign in to your Amazon account. Select the remote icon, then select Set Up New Fire TV.
Follow the app's setup prompts. Use the app's navigation controls to open Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote.
Insert batteries into the physical remote. If it doesn't appear, hold its Home button for 10 seconds. Select the remote to pair it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the navigation buttons work but volume and power don't?
TV controls need separate setup when Fire TV navigation already works. On compatible Fire TV streaming devices, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV. Check the brand under Change TV. If it's wrong, select Change TV and follow the prompts. This procedure excludes Fire TV Smart TVs.
Can too many paired controllers prevent another remote from pairing?
Yes. When seven controllers are paired, remove an existing controller before adding another. Follow the removal prompts under Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices. This isn't an expected explanation immediately after a successful factory reset.
Can a setup QR code or Ethernet connection bypass remote pairing?
Amazon offers QR-code Wi-Fi setup and Ethernet networking on its Ember 2-Series and 4-Series and Fire TV 2-Series and 4-Series 2025 releases. These options establish networking. Amazon does not offer them as a supported bypass for the preceding remote-pairing requirement.
Should I update Fire TV after the remote works again?
Yes. Once navigation works and Fire TV has internet access, open Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > About > Check for System Update. Updating is a follow-up maintenance step and requires working navigation.
