To get trading cards on Steam, play a participating game and collect the cards that automatically arrive in your Inventory. Most games award approximately half a set through gameplay, so you can complete your collection by trading or buying missing cards through the Community Market. Eligible accounts can also receive random booster packs after collecting their available gameplay drops.
The short version
- Start with gameplay: Play a participating game to receive its available card drops automatically.
- Check your allowance: Open Badges to see remaining drops and booster eligibility for each game.
- Complete the set: Trade for missing cards or buy specific cards through the Community Market.
- Know the exceptions: Free-to-play drops require qualifying purchases, and sale cards depend on an active promotion.

Start with a game that supports trading cards
Choose a game that supports Steam Trading Cards, then play it to receive its available drops. Cards arrive automatically in your Inventory, where you can check what you have collected. You need a participating game and an account eligible for its drops.
If you need an account, create your Steam account before collecting cards. If you need the desktop client, open the official Steam download page, select Install Steam, and choose the installer appropriate to your supported operating system.
Most games provide approximately half a set through play, and continuing to play does not provide unlimited drops. Once that allowance runs out, use trading, the Market, or eligible booster drops to obtain more cards.
Check how many drops you have left
Open your Steam badges page while signed in, then locate the game. Select How do I earn card drops? to see earned drops, requirements for additional drops, and booster eligibility. You can reach this account page through a browser or Steam's community interface.
If the game still has available gameplay drops, continue playing to collect them. When its available drops are exhausted, switch to trading, Market purchases, or eligible booster drops instead of spending more time playing for additional cards.
Earn drops in free to play games
For participating free-to-play games, qualifying purchases through the game's in-game store earn card-drop entitlements. Make a qualifying purchase, then play to receive the drops. Purchase controls differ by game, so follow that game's store controls.
Steam awards approximately one drop entitlement for every US$9 spent since the game's trading cards launched. Steam Store DLC purchases do not qualify for this route. Before buying anything for cards, check the game's entry on Badges and select How do I earn card drops? to see its additional-drop requirements.
Stay eligible for random booster packs
Collect all available gameplay drops for a participating game to become eligible for its booster-pack drops. Sign in to Steam each week to remain eligible. Steam randomly awards packs to eligible accounts as community members craft badges, and each pack contains three cards.
A weekly sign-in maintains eligibility, but it does not guarantee a pack every week. Higher Steam levels improve your chances; you can level up your Steam profile to improve that chance. Booster drops remain random even at a higher level.
Trade for cards your set is missing
Open Badges > Badges in Progress and select the game's badge. Steam lists friends who have cards you are missing and provides a messaging link for arranging a trade.
To prepare an offer in the Steam client or browser, open your profile-name menu and select Inventory > Trade Offers > New Trade Offer, then select a friend. Add the cards you want and the items you are offering. When the trade completes, you give up the offered items in exchange for the items you receive. Review the contents, check the trade-content confirmation box, and select Make Offer.
You can also begin from your profile-name menu by selecting Friends, choosing a friend, opening ..., and selecting Offer a Trade. Add and review the items, check the trade-content confirmation box, and select Make Offer. Both routes require tradable cards and accounts without applicable restrictions.
To review offers sent to you, open Inventory > Trade Offers. For a trade with someone outside your friends list, use that person's shared Unique Trade URL. To find your own URL, open Who can send me Trade Offers?.
If you want to negotiate, select Incoming Offers > Respond to Offer > Change Offer, then adjust the items. Select Confirm trade contents, followed by Send Counter Offer. This proposes a different exchange for the other person to review.
Complete the trade confirmation
After preparing an offer, follow the confirmation request in Steam Mobile if your account uses its Mobile Authenticator. Otherwise, use the email confirmation request. Steam requires trade confirmations and does not allow you to disable them.
If you need the app, open the official Steam mobile apps page, choose Steam Mobile, and follow its official store link for your iOS or Android device. Sign in only through Steam’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.
Buy individual cards or booster packs
Open Community > Market in the Steam client or browser and find the card you want. Select Buy on a commodity listing, or Buy now if that is the purchase label shown. Where the purchase form offers quantity and maximum-price controls, enter how many cards you want and the most you are willing to pay.
A matching listing completes the order; otherwise, your buy order waits for a matching seller. Buying a specific card lets you fill a particular gap in your set, while a booster pack gives you random cards.
The Market requires eligibility and Steam Wallet funds. Its requirements include a successful purchase more than seven days but less than one year ago, plus Steam Guard enabled for 15 days. If you need to establish when you bought a game, find your Steam purchase date before comparing it with the purchase requirement.
Account and item restrictions can also affect Market access or trading. If a purchase is blocked, check your eligibility against those requirements before trying again. You can also check Badges for any gameplay drops you remain eligible to collect.
To buy a booster, find the game's listed booster pack on the Market and select Buy. After purchasing it, open the pack in your Inventory to receive its three random cards. If you need a specific card, buy that card individually rather than relying on random pack contents.
Collect sale cards during qualifying promotions
During an active qualifying Summer or Winter Sale card promotion, complete a game's card set and craft its game badge from Badges. Steam awards one additional sale trading card per game badge crafted during the promotion. This reward is separate from the ordinary gameplay drops for that game.
Qualifying Steam purchases during those promotions can also earn sale cards. Steam's sale-card terms award one card per US$10 spent, with the active promotion's regional terms governing your purchases. Check the announced terms for the event before making a purchase for sale cards.
If older sale advice sends you to the Discovery Queue for cards, Steam's 2026 Summer Sale announcement describes its queue rewards as stickers. For sale cards, use badge crafting or qualifying purchases while the relevant promotion is active. Outside those promotions, use gameplay drops, trades, Market purchases, and eligible random boosters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Steam achievements give you trading cards?
Steam achievements do not award trading cards. You earn ordinary gameplay drops through playtime in participating games, not by completing achievements.
Can you guarantee a foil trading card?
You cannot guarantee a foil through random drops. Foils are random variants, and each card inside a booster pack has a chance of being foil.
Can Steam Mobile generate trading cards?
Steam Mobile is not a separate gameplay card generator. You can use it for account security and transaction functions, including trade confirmations.
Should you use bots or scripts to farm Steam cards?
Do not use bots or scripts to automate card farming. Valve's Steam Subscriber Agreement prohibits automation, including fabricated gameplay statistics and rewards earned without genuine user input.
