Need to delete an Instagram Story before more people see it, or clean up one that already expired? Instagram uses separate paths for live Story items, archived Stories, Highlights, boosted Stories, and scheduled Stories. Start with the place where the Story is now, then remove the exact item without touching unrelated posts.

Remove a Live Instagram Story

This removes one selected photo or video from your active Instagram Story.

Open Instagram.

Tap Your story at the top of Feed.

Open the photo or video you want to remove.

Tap Options in the bottom right. On iPhone or iPad, tap More in the bottom right.

Tap Delete. On iPhone or iPad, tap Delete story.

Tap Delete again to confirm. If you also shared the Story to Facebook, choose Delete from both or Delete from Instagram only.

Check Multi-Item Stories Before You Delete

Instagram deletes the specific photo or video you selected, not every item in a multi-item Story. Open the exact slide you want gone before using Options and Delete.

A live Instagram Story disappears from Feed, your profile, and Direct after 24 hours unless you add it to a Highlight. Expiration removes it from those live placements; Story Archive keeps an archived copy when Story Archive is enabled.

For an expired Story, skip Your story at the top of Feed and use Your activity and Archived.

Find a Story That Already Expired

The most common cause is the 24-hour mark: the Story moved out of the live Story tray.

Open Instagram.

Tap Profile or your profile picture.

Tap Menu in the top right.

Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.

Tap Archived, then open the Story you want to remove. If your menu shows Archive directly instead, use the shortcut below.

Tap Options in the bottom right.

Tap Delete on Android or Delete story on iPhone.

Tap Delete again to confirm.

Deleting a Story from Archived also removes that Story from other places it was shared on Instagram, including Highlights.

Use the Profile Archive Shortcut

This method applies when your Instagram profile menu shows Archive directly. It reaches the same Story Archive area through the profile menu.

Tap Profile to open your Instagram profile.

Tap the menu button in the top right.

Tap Archive.

Use the archive selector to choose Stories archive.

Open the Story you want to delete.

Tap the three-dots button in the bottom right.

Tap Delete story on iPhone or Delete on Android.

Tap Delete to confirm.

Take a Story Out of a Highlight

Taking a Story out of a Highlight removes it from that Highlight on your profile, not from Story Archive. Open the Highlight from your Instagram profile and go to the Story you want to remove.

Tap More in the bottom right of the Story, tap Remove from Highlight, then tap Remove on iPhone or Remove Photo on Android.

Deleting the whole Highlight container is separate. Find the Highlight below Edit Profile on your profile and tap and hold it.

Tap Delete Highlight, then tap Delete again. To delete the original Story too, delete it from Archived.

Permanently Clear Recently Deleted

This method applies after you have already deleted a Story and want it removed from Recently deleted before Instagram clears it automatically. Instagram automatically deletes Recently deleted content after 30 days, or within 24 hours for Stories that are not in Story Archive.

Go to your Instagram profile.

Tap the menu icon in the top right.

Tap Your activity.

Tap Recently deleted.

At the top, tap Stories.

Select the deleted Story.

Tap Options.

Tap Delete, then tap Delete again to permanently remove it.

Remove a Boosted Story

This fixes a Story that was promoted from a professional or business account.

Go to your Instagram profile.

Tap Professional dashboard.

Tap Ad tools.

Tap Edit next to the ad you want to delete.

Tap Delete ad.

Tap Delete to confirm. You have to delete the ad first, even if it already finished running.

Open the original Story from Your story if it is still live, or from Archived if it expired.

Tap Options in the bottom right, or More on iPhone.

Tap Delete, or Delete story on iPhone.

Tap Delete again to confirm.

Delete a Scheduled Story in Meta Business Suite

Use this path when the Story is scheduled or managed through a Facebook Page or Instagram professional account in Meta Business Suite.

Open Meta Business Suite on desktop.

Click the Content tab in the left menu, then click the Stories tab.

Select Active, Scheduled, or Archived, depending on the Story's status.

Select the Story, click the ... icon, and choose the option to delete it.

Avoid Old Recently Deleted Paths

Older Instagram instructions point to Settings, Account, and Recently Deleted. Use Your activity and Recently deleted in the current app.

Uninstalling Instagram removes the app from your phone; it does not delete a Story from your Instagram account. To delete a live Story in a phone browser, open instagram.com, go to Your story, tap Options in the top right, then tap Delete twice. Deleting an archived Story works only in the Instagram app, not on a computer.

If the old Settings path fails, open the Story from Your story, Archived, or Recently deleted based on whether it is live, expired, or already deleted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete all Instagram Stories at once?

Live Story items are deleted one at a time from Your story. To remove several Highlights at once, open Menu, Your activity, then Highlights, tap Select, choose the Highlights, tap Delete, and tap Delete again. For archived Stories, open Your activity and Archived, and if Select does not appear in the top right, delete them one at a time.

Can I delete a Story with the Instagram API?

Yes, for eligible Instagram Business or Creator accounts. Use the Instagram API with Facebook Login and a Facebook User access token with the instagram_basic and instagram_manage_contents permissions, then send a DELETE request to the Story's IG Media ID.

Will deleting my Instagram account remove my Stories?

Yes, but it removes the whole profile and account content. Open Menu, then Accounts Center. If you see Accounts at the bottom, tap Personal details, Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion. If you see Manage accounts instead, tap Profiles and personal details, Manage next to Instagram, then Deactivation or deletion. Choose the profile, select Delete account, and tap Continue. Meta permanently deletes the profile 30 days after the request unless you cancel, and the cancellation window varies by region.

Can Instagram remove a Story for a rules violation?

Yes. Instagram can remove a Story when it finds a Community Guidelines or Community Standards violation. Review removals from Help and Account Status.
