To connect AirPods to a Chromebook, put them in pairing mode, open the Chromebook’s Bluetooth controls, turn Bluetooth on, select Pair new device, and choose your AirPods. You can use them for listening and microphone audio on a Bluetooth-capable Chromebook. The steps below use current ChromeOS menus, and the pairing control depends on your AirPods model.

The short version

  • Compatibility: AirPods can connect directly to a Bluetooth-capable Chromebook without prior setup on an iPhone.
  • Pairing mode: Use the rear case button, front case gesture, or listening mode button that matches your model.
  • Chromebook setup: Select the time, open Bluetooth, turn it on, and select Pair new device.
  • Audio selection: If sound stays on the Chromebook speakers, select your connected AirPods under Output in Audio settings.

Put your AirPods in pairing mode

For AirPods 1, 2, or 3 and AirPods Pro 1 or 2, place both earbuds in the case and open the lid. Hold the rear setup button until the indicator blinks white. This procedure covers both Lightning and USB-C case variants of AirPods Pro 2.

With AirPods 4, AirPods 5, or AirPods Pro 3, leave both earbuds inside the open case and double-tap the front until the indicator blinks white. For AirPods Max, hold the listening mode button until the indicator blinks white. Once you see that signal, select the AirPods in the Chromebook pairing screen using the steps below.

Connect through Chromebook Bluetooth

Select the time at the bottom right of the Chromebook screen, then select Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth on and select Pair new device. Choose your AirPods name, then check that it appears under Currently connected.

You can also pair through the Settings app. Open Settings > Bluetooth, enable Bluetooth, and select Pair new device. Select your AirPods name while their indicator is blinking white.

To reach these controls using a keyboard shortcut, press Alt + Shift + s to open the status area, then select Settings. Choose Bluetooth, or press Ctrl + f to focus the Settings search bar and search for Bluetooth. Enable Bluetooth if needed, continue with Pair new device, and select your AirPods.

Choose the AirPods for sound and microphone audio

Once the AirPods are connected, select the time and open Audio settings beside the volume slider. Under Output, select your AirPods and look for the green check that identifies the active output. Raise the volume slider if needed, and under Input, select the AirPods microphone when available.

For more audio controls, open Settings > Device > Audio. Under Output > Device, choose your AirPods and adjust Volume as needed. Under Input > Device, choose their microphone when available or select the Chromebook microphone, then use Mic test to check your input.

Google Meet in Chrome also has its own microphone and speaker selections, which you can use after connecting the AirPods to your Chromebook. Before joining, use the microphone and speaker dropdowns beneath the preview tile, or open More options > Settings > Audio and choose the AirPods. During a meeting, select the arrow beside the microphone to open the microphone and speaker selectors.

Reconnect AirPods you have already paired

For AirPods already paired with that Chromebook, select the time, open Bluetooth, and find your AirPods under Previously connected. Select their name to reconnect. If sound continues through the Chromebook speakers, select the AirPods in the audio output controls.

You can also open Settings > Bluetooth and enable Bluetooth. Under Previously connected, select the arrow beside your saved AirPods, then select Connect.

Fix a connection that will not complete

Begin by restarting the Bluetooth connection on the Chromebook. Select the time, open Bluetooth, turn it off, and turn it on again before reconnecting your AirPods. This also temporarily disconnects other Bluetooth accessories.

Next, restart AirPods or AirPods Pro earbuds by placing them in their case and closing the lid for at least ten seconds. Open the case and retry the connection. For a new pairing, use your model’s pairing control again until the indicator blinks white.

A saved connection that still fails may need to be removed. Open the bottom-right status area, select Settings > Bluetooth, and select your AirPods name under Currently connected or Previously connected. Choose Forget, then put the AirPods in pairing mode and repeat the initial pairing steps.

On a Chromebook still eligible for updates, connect to Wi-Fi and select the time, then Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates. Available updates download automatically. Select Restart in the Update device notification to finish, then retry the connection. Your school or work administrator may control update availability.

Allow microphone access for calls

If playback works but callers cannot hear you, check microphone access after selecting the correct input device. Open Settings > Privacy and security > Privacy controls and turn on Microphone access. Select the calling app and enable its microphone permission, and enable the Chromebook’s physical microphone switch if it has one.

For calls in Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone. Choose the connected AirPods microphone from the dropdown. If the calling site is blocked, select its entry and change its microphone permission to Allow; for a new permission prompt, select Allow while visiting the site.

Return to the calling app and check its microphone selection again. On a managed Chromebook, you may need an administrator to change managed microphone permissions. If microphone trouble continues beyond device selection and permissions, work through the relevant steps to troubleshoot microphone problems on your computer.

Reset your AirPods if pairing still fails

For AirPods 1, 2, or 3 and AirPods Pro 1 or 2, place the earbuds in their case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds. Open the lid and hold the rear setup button for approximately 15 seconds, until the indicator changes from flashing amber to flashing white. This resets the earbuds’ settings, so pair them with the Chromebook again afterward.

For AirPods 4, AirPods 5, or AirPods Pro 3, complete any applicable Apple-device unpairing first, then place the earbuds in their case, close it, and wait 30 seconds. Open the lid and double-tap the front while the indicator is lit. Double-tap again when it blinks white, then double-tap once more when the blinking accelerates. Amber followed by white indicates that the reset is complete, after which you can pair with the Chromebook again.

For AirPods Max that still will not connect, charge the headphones to at least 50 percent if possible. Hold the listening mode button and Digital Crown together, releasing them when the indicator blinks amber. Retry the Chromebook connection after this restart.

If restarting AirPods Max fails, or charging is impossible, reset the headphones by holding both controls for 15 seconds until the indicator changes from amber to white. Pair them with the Chromebook again afterward.

Resolve persistent Chromebook Bluetooth problems

If simpler troubleshooting fails, a Chromebook hardware reset is another option for models that use these procedures. Google warns that a hardware reset might delete some files in Downloads, and some models require different steps. Use only the procedure that matches your Chromebook.

For most Chromebook laptops, shut down, hold Refresh, and tap Power, then release Refresh when startup begins. Google also documents holding Back + Refresh + Power for at least ten seconds as an alternative. For Chromebook tablets, hold Volume up + Power for at least ten seconds, then release. Retry pairing afterward.

If a school or work policy disables Bluetooth, ask your administrator to allow it. With administrator privileges, open the Google Admin console, go to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device settings, and select the device’s organizational unit. For Bluetooth, select Do not disable bluetooth, then select Save and restart the Chromebook after re-enabling it. Also review Bluetooth services allowed; an empty list permits all services.

Use a cable with compatible AirPods Max

AirPods Max offer wired listening options that depend on their connector and your Chromebook’s ports. For AirPods Max 1 with USB-C or AirPods Max 2, update the headphones and Chromebook, then connect them using USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to USB-A for a Chromebook with USB-A. Select the resulting audio output if necessary.

Apple supports digital USB audio with non-Apple USB hosts generally, so Chromebook compatibility follows that broader support. These cable instructions cover listening; use the Bluetooth connection and microphone controls above for calls.

A Chromebook with a 3.5 mm headphone output offers another wired listening route through Apple’s general analog-source support. Connect the matching Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable or USB-C to 3.5 mm Audio Cable between the AirPods Max and the Chromebook. Select the wired output in the Chromebook audio controls if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use Siri through AirPods connected to a Chromebook?

No, Siri is unavailable through an AirPods connection to a non-Apple device. You can still use the Chromebook Bluetooth connection for listening and microphone audio.

Can a Chromebook update AirPods firmware?

Apple does not document a Chromebook as an AirPods firmware-update host. Connect your AirPods by Bluetooth to an updated iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to Wi-Fi, then connect charging power to the earbud case or AirPods Max. Keep them near the Apple device for at least 30 minutes, with earbuds inside the closed case, then reconnect and check the firmware. Without an Apple device, arrange an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider appointment.

Can you connect AirPods through the Chromebook headphone jack?

Yes, an AirFly Pro 2 can transmit playback from a Chromebook’s 3.5 mm headphone output to AirPods. Connect the transmitter, set its TX/RX switch to TX and ON/OFF switch to ON, then put the AirPods in pairing mode; hold PAIR 1 for four seconds if transmitter pairing does not start. Wait for pairing, then play Chromebook audio. Your AirPods connect to the transmitter for playback only, so this route cannot send their microphone audio back to the Chromebook.

Can two pairs of headphones share Chromebook audio?

An AirFly Pro 2 can connect two compatible Bluetooth headphone pairs to the Chromebook’s headphone output. With the transmitter powered on and the first pair connected, put the second pair in pairing mode and hold PAIR 2 for four seconds. Its indicator stays illuminated for ten seconds after successful pairing.
