Your messages bounce, a friend disappears from your list, and you start wondering if they blocked you on Discord. Those signs also come from privacy settings and ordinary unfriending, so even several together don't confirm a block. Start with the checks below to understand each result and rule out other explanations.

Send a direct message and read the error

A failed DM has several documented causes, including privacy restrictions, no shared server and blocking.

Open your existing DM conversation with the person on desktop, in the browser, or in the iOS or Android app.

Send a short message, such as a quick hello.

Look for Clyde's error beginning Your message could not be delivered. Discord lists being blocked as one reason for that error, but the message alone doesn't establish a block.

The other causes include having no shared server, disabled DMs, friends-only DMs, incomplete server membership screening and prohibited message content. If you see the error, continue with the friendship check.

Look for them in your friends list

Blocking removes an existing friendship. This check is useful only if you were friends before.

On desktop or in the browser, navigate through the upper-left Direct Messages icon to Friends > All.

On mobile, tap your bottom-right avatar to open Your Friends.

Look for the person. Use All rather than Online on desktop, because Online excludes offline friends. A missing friendship fits both blocking and ordinary unfriending; it doesn't distinguish between them.

If this check doesn't settle the question, or you were never friends, try a friend request using their exact username.

Send a friend request by username

If the person isn't already your friend, check the result of a request:

  1. 1.On desktop or in the browser, select the Discord logo and navigate to Friends > Add Friend. On mobile, tap the upper-left chat bubble and navigate to Add Friends > Add by Username.
  2. 2.Enter the person's exact username.
  3. 3.Select Send Friend Request.
  4. 4.On desktop or in the browser, check Pending for the request.
  5. 5.Read any error. Discord shows blocked users an error when they try to re-add the blocker, but Friend Request Failed also indicates disabled requests. An incorrect username also produces an error, so failure alone doesn't confirm a block.

Request them from their profile instead

A mistyped username causes a request error, and sending directly from a profile removes that explanation.

On desktop or in the browser, open a shared server or group chat.

Select the person's profile.

Choose View Profile.

Click Send Friend Request.

For the desktop/browser shortcut, right-click their profile or one of their server messages.

Select Add Friend.

On mobile, open their profile from a shared group chat or server member list.

Tap Add Friend.

If this request fails, a manually mistyped username is no longer the explanation. Friend-request restrictions still produce failures, so this result doesn't separate privacy settings from blocking.

Compare what their profile shows you

Discord limits the profile and activity information that blocked users see. Reduced visibility is a supporting clue, not confirmation, because Discord's Profile Privacy setting also lets people hide details such as their bio, badges, pronouns and custom status from anyone who isn't their friend. Teen accounts start with full profile details visible only to friends and members of small servers.

Open the person's profile from an existing DM, shared group chat or server member list.

On desktop or in the browser, select View Profile to expand it.

Compare the visible information with what you previously saw. Discord doesn't specify a definitive checklist of missing bios, badges, banners or mutual servers. Some group activity remains visible after a block, too.

If the comparison gives you no clear answer, check your own blocked list next to establish whether you blocked them.

Make sure you didn't block them yourself

A block on your own account also restricts contact, so check which accounts you have blocked.

On desktop or in the browser, navigate to Direct Messages > Friends > Blocked.

Look for the person. This tab lists accounts you blocked; it doesn't identify people who blocked you.

For the settings route, open User Settings > Content & Social > Accounts you've blocked & ignored.

On mobile, tap your bottom-right avatar.

Tap the upper-right cogwheel.

Navigate to Content & Social > Accounts you've blocked & ignored to review your own list.

Rule out DM and friend request settings

On desktop or in the browser, click the bottom-left cogwheel to open User Settings and find your direct message permissions. Select a server from the drop-down in that section to inspect its setting.

On mobile, tap your bottom-right profile icon. Tap the upper-right cogwheel and navigate to Content & Social > Server Settings > Direct messages. Use the Server Settings drop-down to inspect individual servers.

For desktop/browser friend-request controls, open User Settings and find the Friend Requests section. Review Everyone, Friends of Friends and Server Members.

These controls show your settings, not the recipient's. You cannot inspect their settings, and restrictions on their side also explain failed contact.

What doesn't prove a block either way

Use these limits when the checks leave you with mixed results or someone suggests a quick detection trick.

Keep old messages and shared-server activity out of your conclusion. Existing messages and continued interaction in shared spaces don't rule out a block.

Don't use reactions, server invitations, group-DM additions, calls, online status or comparisons with another account or a mutual friend's view as block detectors. Discord provides no official detection procedure based on those tests. Server timeouts also prevent reactions, messages and voice participation, so a failed reaction doesn't establish a block.

Read your DM, friendship, request and profile results together, while keeping each alternative explanation in view. Even a failed DM, a missing friendship and a failed request together don't confirm blocking. Discord provides no official list or lookup of people who blocked you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is being ignored on Discord the same as being blocked?

No. Ignored users can still send messages and remain friends. Discord doesn't tell them they have been ignored.

Do I need Discord Nitro to run these checks?

No. The DM, friends-list, friend-request and profile checks have no Nitro requirement.

Can an app reveal who blocked me on Discord?

Discord provides no official companion-app detector for incoming blocks. No download is needed for the checks available within Discord.

Can Discord Support resolve an undeliverable DM?

Discord Support offers help with technical DM errors. Its DM guidance says it cannot otherwise provide further assistance, so support isn't a route to confirming who blocked you.
