Check your compatible Xfinity gateway’s installed firmware in the Xfinity app under WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Gateway > Gateway Details; Xfinity delivers updates automatically. Keep your gateway plugged in and online to receive those updates. Reading the version shows what is installed, but it does not start an update or confirm that you have the latest approved build.
The short version
- Check the version: Open your gateway’s details in the Xfinity app to read its installed firmware information.
- Receive updates: Leave your Xfinity gateway powered on and online for automatic delivery.
- Restart for trouble: Use a restart for connection troubleshooting without expecting it to force a firmware update.
- Confirm a concern: Give Xfinity support your installed version when asking about a suspected firmware problem.

Check the installed firmware in the Xfinity app
Sign in to the Xfinity app, select WiFi, then open View WiFi equipment > Gateway > Gateway Details. Read the firmware information shown for your gateway. You can take a screenshot of the details to keep the version handy when contacting support.
This path applies to compatible Xfinity gateways that expose Gateway Details. Xfinity documents it alongside firmware requirements for XB6, XB7, XB8, and XF3 equipment. If you cannot reach those details on your model, contact Xfinity for help checking your installed version.
To get the app, open the official Xfinity app download page and choose its Google Play or App Store download option. You need iOS 17.2 or later or Android 10.0 or later. Use the current Xfinity app instead of following older instructions for the retired xFi website or standalone My Account mobile app.
Let Xfinity deliver firmware updates
Leave your gateway plugged in and online so it can receive automatic firmware updates. Xfinity handles installation, so you do not need to download a firmware file or install it yourself. Automatic firmware delivery also applies to compatible Xfinity WiFi Extenders.
Xfinity provides regular software updates for its gateways, including XB3, XB6, XB7, XB8, XB9, and XB10. The version you read in the app identifies your installed build; it does not tell you whether another update is waiting. If you need confirmation that your build is appropriate for your gateway, give the version to Xfinity support.
Restart your gateway for connection problems
If you are investigating a connection problem alongside a firmware concern, sign in to the Xfinity app to restart your rented gateway. Select WiFi > Troubleshoot > Restart your Gateway, then allow up to 12 minutes. Xfinity provides this as a troubleshooting step and does not promise that restarting forces a firmware update.
You can also unplug the equipment’s power cable, wait one minute, then reconnect it. This restart procedure applies to Xfinity gateways, modems, routers, and most third-party devices. Once your compatible gateway is back online, you can check its installed version again if you need to report it to support.
Ask Xfinity to check a firmware concern
Open the Xfinity app and select Services > Ask Xfinity Assistant. Describe your firmware concern and provide the installed version if you have it. Include any connection symptoms so support can investigate the issue.
For another entry point, open Xfinity’s website, select Support, then choose Chat with Xfinity Assistant. You can also text your question to 266278. If your issue remains unresolved, the Assistant can connect you with an agent who can chat with you online.
Enable browser access for gateway administration
Browser administration gives you access to gateway settings, but enabling it does not install firmware. For XB6, XB7, XB8, and XB10, open the Xfinity app and select WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Advanced settings > Admin Tool online access. Turn on Allow Admin Tool access, then select Save.
On first use, create the requested password and select Save. While connected to your home WiFi, enter http://10.0.0.1 in your browser’s address bar and sign in with the username admin and the password you created. XB9, MXB1, and XER10 also require the app access toggle.
Xfinity’s documented update process is automatic: keep your gateway plugged in and online to install the latest firmware. To read your installed firmware on compatible gateways, use Gateway Details in the Xfinity app.
Check firmware for separately purchased equipment
If you use a separately purchased standalone router, follow its manufacturer’s update procedures. The Xfinity gateway app path does not cover every third-party router. Check whether your equipment is an Xfinity-provided gateway, a customer-owned cable modem or modem router, or a separate router before choosing the procedure.
For customer-owned NETGEAR cable equipment listed in NETGEAR’s firmware table, open the table and find your exact model. Compare your installed version with Comcast (Deployed Firmware), then contact Xfinity if it is outdated. NETGEAR says your internet provider supplies cable firmware updates.
CAX-series and CBR-series devices have separate router and cable firmware. Handle their router updates separately using NETGEAR’s procedures, rather than applying the cable firmware update process to both components.
Check equipment support when replacement is needed
For customer-owned equipment, open Xfinity’s end-of-life equipment support information, open My Device Info, sign in, and search for your device’s make and model. This checks hardware support rather than identifying the installed firmware build.
For rented equipment that requires replacement, visit the Xfinity equipment update page, contact Xfinity, or exchange it at an Xfinity Retail Store. Online equipment replacement is not available to every customer.
If you want to review Xfinity’s modem and router offering, open its official gateway product page. That page describes gateway equipment; it is not a repository for downloadable gateway firmware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Xfinity app user view gateway equipment?
Primary, Manager, and Member users can view WiFi equipment in the Xfinity app. Viewer users and Guest Mode do not have that access. Your available features also vary with your service, gateway, and bridge mode.
Can I ask about firmware through my TV?
On X1 and Flex, use your Xfinity Voice Remote and say Xfinity Assistant, then follow the on-screen support options. On X1, you can also open Help > Tools > Xfinity Assistant, except on RNG150 TV Boxes. These routes open Xfinity Assistant, where you can describe your firmware concern.
Can I still use the Admin Tool password on my gateway’s label?
If you enabled Admin Tool access before February 2026, you may still use the admin password printed on your gateway’s bottom label. Otherwise, sign in with the password you created when enabling access in the Xfinity app.
Can I get help through the Xfinity Home or Stream app?
In the Xfinity Home app, open More > Chat with an Agent. In the Xfinity Stream app, open Settings > Xfinity Assistant. You can use either route to ask about your firmware concern.
Does a provisioning signal mean my firmware was updated?
A provisioning signal is not equivalent to a firmware update. If support sends one during troubleshooting, ask separately about your installed firmware version instead of treating the signal as confirmation of an update.
