To hide Gemini in desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome, then turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser under Preferences. On Windows or Mac, also turn off the combined system tray or menu bar and keyboard shortcut setting. Deactivate the separate Gemini site search shortcut to remove that address bar entry point too.

The short version

  • Browser button: Hide Gemini through its preferences or select Unpin Gemini.
  • Launch shortcuts: Windows and Mac have a separate switch for the desktop entry point and keyboard shortcut.
  • Address bar: Deactivate the Gemini site search shortcut through Manage search engines and site search.
  • Mobile Chrome: Closing the chat dismisses it, while signing out affects eligibility for the integration.

Hide the Gemini button at the top of Chrome

On Windows, Mac, or an eligible Chromebook Plus with Gemini enabled, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Under Preferences, turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser. This hides the browser button; other entry points have separate controls.

If Gemini is pinned, you can also right-click the top of Chrome and select Unpin Gemini. Use either route to hide the button, then change the launch and address bar settings below if you want those entry points removed too.

Disable desktop launch shortcuts

On Windows, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Under Preferences, turn off Show Gemini in system tray and turn on keyboard shortcut. This combined setting removes the tray entry and disables its keyboard shortcut.

On Mac, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Under Preferences, turn off Show Gemini in Mac menu bar and turn on keyboard shortcut. This removes the menu bar entry and disables its keyboard shortcut.

To keep keyboard access with a different combination, open Gemini and select More options > Settings & help > Open Chrome settings. Beside the keyboard or navigation shortcut, select Edit, then press your replacement combination. Changing these keys does not disable Gemini.

If you have opted in and the default shortcuts remain enabled, close an open panel with Alt + G on Windows, Ctrl + G on Mac, or Search + G on ChromeOS. These shortcuts toggle the panel, so pressing the combination again opens it.

Deactivate Gemini in the address bar

The built-in @gemini site search shortcut has its own control in desktop Chrome. Open More > Settings > Search engine > Manage search engines and site search. Beside Gemini, select More > Deactivate.

Google supports deactivating this built-in shortcut, but it cannot be edited or deleted. Its setting is separate from the Gemini panel and browser button, so hiding the button alone does not deactivate it.

If the address bar control says AI Mode, it belongs to Google Search and has a different setting. In desktop Chrome with the AI Mode rollout, right-click the address bar and uncheck Always show AI Mode. This hides both AI Mode and Add tabs and more from the address bar.

Dismiss Gemini on your phone or tablet

On iPhone or iPad with Gemini in Chrome, tap Close on the right of the Gemini chat box. To minimize the conversation instead, tap the background tab or scroll the page. Closing the chat does not remove Ask Gemini from Page tools or More.

On Android with Gemini in Chrome, tap Close on the right of the chat box, or double-tap the background tab to minimize it. Google describes this rollout for adults using English in supported regions, on Android 12 or later with at least 4 GB of RAM.

Use Incognito or sign out of Chrome

Gemini in Chrome is unavailable in Incognito. On desktop, open More > New Incognito window. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command + Shift + N on Mac.

On Android, open More > Open in a new Incognito window; tablets may show New Incognito window. On iPhone or iPad, open More > New Incognito Tab. Incognito leaves regular-window settings unchanged and does not suppress AI content on websites.

Signing out is a broader change because Google requires Chrome sign-in for the Gemini integration. It removes eligibility and also affects account and sync features. The desktop sign-out steps here apply to Windows and Mac.

On Windows or Mac, select Profile > Sign out of Chrome. If your profile uses the sync-enabled interface, select Profile > Sync is on > You and Google > Turn off. Confirm by selecting Turn off again.

On Android, open More > Settings, select your name, then tap Sign out. On iPhone or iPad, open More > Settings, select your name, then tap Sign Out.

Stop the Android assistant from opening over Chrome

If Gemini appears as your Android assistant, open Android Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app. Select None or choose another assistant. Manufacturer menu paths vary, and this change does not disable Chrome’s own integration.

If holding the power button opens Gemini, open Settings > System > Gestures > Press & hold power button on devices with that menu. Choose a non-assistant action. Other manufacturers may place this control in side-button settings.

For voice activation, open Gemini, select Menu, then your profile picture or initial, and open Settings > Talk to Gemini hands-free. Turn off Hey Google. This controls voice activation of the Android assistant.

If your device offers the assistant switch, open Gemini, select Menu, then your profile picture or initial, and select Switch to Google Assistant > Google Assistant. In the Switch to Google Assistant? dialog, tap Switch. This option depends on your device.

To remove a separately installed, removable Gemini app, open Google Play Store and select Profile > Manage apps & devices > Manage. Select Gemini, then tap Uninstall. Google says uninstalling the app does not automatically remove Gemini as the default assistant, and it does not remove Chrome’s built-in integration.

Remove Gemini website apps and new tab shortcuts

If you installed the Gemini website as a web app on Windows, Mac, or Linux, open that app and select More > Uninstall [app name] > Remove, with the installed app’s name in the uninstall label. On Chromebook, right-click its launcher icon, select Uninstall, then select Uninstall again. For optional browsing data deletion, select Also delete browsing data; uninstalling the website app does not uninstall Gemini in Chrome.

To keep an installed Gemini web app but stop it launching at startup on Windows, Mac, or Linux, open chrome://apps. Right-click the installed Gemini web app and deselect Launch at startup. This setting applies to the installed web app, separately from the built-in Gemini panel.

For an ordinary Gemini website shortcut on the desktop New Tab page, point to the shortcut and select More > Remove. To hide all website shortcuts instead, open Customize Chrome > Shortcuts and turn off Show shortcuts.

On Android, touch and hold the Gemini website icon, then tap Remove. This removes an ordinary website shortcut or frequently visited tile; it does not remove integrated controls such as Ask Gemini or AI Mode.

Turn off local AI models

On eligible computers displaying the setting, open More > Settings > AI Innovations and turn off On-device AI. Chrome deletes local models and prevents their download while the setting remains off. You configure this separately for each user and device, and it does not necessarily hide Gemini or disable features that run without local models.

For managed browsers, have your administrator set GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings to integer 1 to remove an existing model and block downloads. On Windows, the REG_DWORD policy location is Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings. Policy support starts with Chrome 124 on Windows, Mac, and Linux, Chrome 142 on Android, and Chrome 149 on ChromeOS. This controls local models, separately from the cloud Gemini interface.

Manage Gemini access for accounts and browsers

For a managed browser, have your administrator set GeminiSettings to integer 1 to disable Gemini integration. On Windows, use the REG_DWORD policy location Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\GeminiSettings; the Mac preference and Android restriction are also named GeminiSettings. Policy support starts with Chrome 137 on Windows and Mac, Chrome 139 on iOS, Chrome 144 on ChromeOS, and Chrome 149 on Android. Those minimums describe policy support, not consumer feature availability.

If you administer accounts or enrolled browsers through Google Admin console, open Menu > Devices > Chrome > Settings. For Chrome Enterprise Core, open Menu > Chrome browser > Settings instead. Select the relevant organizational unit or group, open Generative AI > Gemini integrations, select Do not allow Gemini integrations, then select Save.

To set a broader default in Google Admin console, open Menu > Devices > Chrome > Settings, or Menu > Chrome browser > Settings for Chrome Enterprise Core. Under Generative AI, open Generative AI policy defaults, select Do not allow GenAI features, then select Save. This corresponds to GenAiDefaultSettings = 2 and applies to Gemini when its individual policy is unset. Explicit feature policies override this default; it is not a locally supported registry substitute.

To disable the Gemini service for managed Google Workspace accounts, open Google Admin console and select Menu > Generative AI > Gemini app > Service status. Select Off for everyone, then select Save; organizational-unit or group targeting is also available. This blocks access to Gemini in Chrome and the Gemini web and mobile apps.

If contextual AI capability suggestions are the issue, have your administrator set ChromeSuggestionsSettings to integer 1. On Windows, its REG_DWORD policy location is Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\ChromeSuggestionsSettings. This policy applies to Chrome 150 or later on Windows, Mac, Linux, and ChromeOS, and suppresses those suggestions without disabling Gemini itself.

For an eligible supervised account, open Family Link, select the child, then open Controls > Gemini > Gemini Apps. Turn off Gemini Apps. Google also says parents continuing supervision at age 13 or the applicable age can disable Gemini-in-Chrome access through Family Link.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing Gemini permissions hide it?

Changing permissions limits Gemini’s capabilities without hiding the integration. Settings such as Microphone, Precise location, Share current tab by default, and Let Gemini browse for you control what it can access or do.

Can you hide only the Ask Gemini right-click entry?

The browser button preference controls the top-of-browser button.

Will changing your account language stop Gemini appearing?

Changing your account language away from English is not a reliable way to remove Gemini.

Why might an older Chrome flags workaround stop working?

Google says experimental Chrome flags depend on the browser version and can disappear without notice. A flag shown in an older workaround may therefore be missing from your version.
