To cancel automatic subscription payments in PayPal, open Settings > Payments > Automatic Payments on the website, select the merchant, and cancel its automatic payment. If your menu shows Subscriptions and saved businesses instead, select that to find the merchant.

Stopping the PayPal payment authorization generally does not end your subscription contract, so cancel the service with its provider as well. The main PayPal steps below use US account menus, with the UK website variation explained separately. Sign in only through PayPal’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

The short version

  • Website: Select the merchant under Automatic Payments or Subscriptions and saved businesses and cancel its automatic payment.
  • PayPal app: Open the merchant’s Account controls, tap Unlink, then tap Unlink again.
  • Service cancellation: Cancel with the subscription provider too, because stopping PayPal authorization generally leaves the merchant contract in place.
  • Store billing: Use Apple or Google Play subscription controls when that company bills you.

Cancel automatic payments on the PayPal website

Sign in to PayPal in a browser on your computer or mobile device, then open Settings and select Payments. Choose Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments, then select the merchant whose payments you want to stop. Cancel the automatic payment from that merchant’s details page.

For a shorter route, open PayPal’s automatic payment portal and sign in. Select the merchant and cancel its automatic payment there. PayPal does not document the exact final website button or confirmation wording, so follow the cancellation prompts on the merchant’s details page.

If your UK website layout shows Manage automatic payments, open Settings > Payments and select that option. Select the relevant agreement, then cancel its automatic payment.

Open the PayPal app and tap Menu, then tap Subscriptions or Linked Businesses. Tap the merchant and tap Account. Tap Unlink, then tap Unlink again to confirm cancellation.

These steps apply to the US consumer app layout described by PayPal. If your app menus differ, open the automatic payment portal in a browser, sign in, and select the merchant to cancel its automatic payment.

Cancel the service with its provider

After stopping the PayPal authorization, open the subscription provider’s account website or app and complete its subscription cancellation process. The provider controls the underlying service agreement, so its menu labels and confirmation steps depend on the service. Canceling the PayPal authorization alone generally does not terminate that agreement.

For subscriptions created through the PayPal hosted checkout flow described for the UK, open the subscription confirmation email and follow its management or cancellation link. Complete the cancellation process at the destination. This email route applies to that checkout flow and may not apply to your older billing agreements.

If the provider’s account controls do not resolve the cancellation, use its official help or support page to request cancellation. Merchants using PayPal’s subscription integration can also cancel subscriptions through their administrative systems. Ask merchant support to cancel the subscription through that route.

Use Apple controls for Apple billed subscriptions

When Apple bills the subscription and PayPal supplies the payment method, manage the subscription through Apple. On an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro, open Settings, tap your name, and choose Subscriptions. Select the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription.

On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then click your name on the account page. Open Subscriptions, choose the subscription, and click Cancel Subscription. These controls apply only to Apple billed subscriptions.

In Apple Music or Apple TV on Windows, click your name, then select View My Account. Under Settings, find Subscriptions and click Manage. Click Edit for the subscription, then click Cancel Subscription.

You can also use Apple’s account website in a browser, including on Android. Open account.apple.com, sign in, and follow the subscription cancellation instructions.

Cancel Google Play billed subscriptions

For a Google Play subscription paid through PayPal, use the subscription controls in Google Play. On an Android phone or tablet, open Google Play’s cancellation help and follow its link to your subscriptions. Select the subscription, tap Cancel subscription, and follow the remaining instructions.

In a browser, sign in to the Google Account used for the purchase and open your subscriptions on play.google.com. Beside the subscription, click Manage, then click Cancel subscription. Select a cancellation reason in the popup and click Continue.

Get help when PayPal cancellation stalls

If PayPal’s account controls do not resolve your cancellation, open its official customer service instructions, then open Contact Us. Describe the automatic payment cancellation request to PayPal Assistant or select the relevant support topic. Choose an available live chat or telephone option; the contact options depend on your situation.

Alternatively, open Message Center and start a conversation about the recurring payment. PayPal documents Assistant as a support entry point.

For a US personal account, you can request cancellation of a recurring automatic payment through PayPal telephone support. PayPal’s US user agreement says you must notify PayPal at least three business days before the scheduled transfer for its stop payment protection. Use the official contact options to reach telephone support and identify the recurring payment you want canceled.

Handle direct debits and funding account problems

A recurring direct debit using PayPal assigned account and routing numbers is separate from an ordinary PayPal automatic payment agreement. These instructions apply to eligible US PayPal Balance accounts using assigned Bancorp account details. Cancel the scheduled payments through the merchant’s website or app.

Alternatively, contact PayPal Customer Service at least three business days before the next recurring transfer and request a stop payment. Identify the payment as a recurring direct debit using your assigned account and routing numbers so your request addresses that arrangement.

After attempting cancellation with the merchant, you can use your card issuer’s official help to request a block on future recurring charges. For direct ACH payments, use your bank’s website or official support to request a stop payment order. A funding account intervention does not itself cancel the PayPal agreement or the merchant contract.

Close PayPal only when ending the entire account

Account closure is a separate option if you want to end your entire PayPal account. PayPal says closure cannot be reversed and cancels scheduled or incomplete transactions, but leaves merchant obligations outstanding. For an individual subscription, use its automatic payment controls and cancel the service with the provider.

Before closing an eligible account, remove the balance and resolve any limitations or outstanding issues. On the PayPal website, open Settings, then under Account options, click Close your account. Click Close Account to complete closure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does canceling an automatic payment refund a payment already made?

A completed payment requires a separate refund request to the seller. Canceling the automatic payment is not the same as requesting that refund.

Can changing my preferred card stop a PayPal subscription?

Changing your preferred card or letting a funding source fail is not a reliable cancellation method because PayPal may use backup funding. Cancel the automatic payment authorization and the underlying subscription instead.

Will uninstalling an app cancel its Google Play subscription?

No, uninstalling an app does not cancel its Google Play subscription. Google says you must cancel the subscription through Google Play.

How do I cancel a subscription started through guest checkout?

Use the subscription provider’s official help to get cancellation instructions for your purchase. Guest checkout cancellation controls depend on the provider.
