Spam calls and unwanted messages are a constant annoyance, but your OnePlus Open makes it easy to block them. Once you block a number, they can't call or text you. Here's how to do it and manage your blocked list on OxygenOS 14.
Block from Recent Calls
Open the Phone app and tap the Recents tab. Find the number you want to block, then tap the i icon next to it. On the contact details screen, tap Block & report spam and confirm your choice. Calls from this number will be silently rejected going forward.
Block from Messages
Open the Messages app and find the conversation from the unwanted number. Tap and hold the conversation in your list, then tap the block icon (a circle with a line through it) at the top of the screen. Alternatively, open the conversation, tap the three-dot menu, and select Details to find the block option.
Block from Contacts
Open the Contacts app, find the person, and tap to open their contact card. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right and select Block. This blocks calls and messages from all numbers saved for that contact.
View and Manage Blocked Numbers
To see or edit your list, open the Phone app. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right and go to Settings > Blocked numbers. You'll see everyone you've blocked. Tap the X next to any number to unblock it. You can also tap Add a number at the bottom to manually block a number that hasn't contacted you yet.
Enable Spam Call Filtering
Your OnePlus Open uses Google's Phone app by default, which has built-in spam detection. Go to Phone > Settings > Caller ID & spam. Toggle on both See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls. With this on, suspected spam calls are flagged with a red warning or silently sent to voicemail.
Block Unknown Callers
You can block all calls from numbers not in your contacts. Go to Phone > Settings > Blocked numbers and toggle on Unknown. This is a very aggressive filter, but it's effective against random spam. Legitimate callers can still leave a voicemail, which you'll receive a notification for.
What Happens When You Block Someone
When you block a number on your OnePlus Open, the caller typically hears one ring before being sent to your voicemail. They won't receive any specific notification that they've been blocked. Text messages from blocked numbers are silently dropped and won't appear in your Messages app at all.
If you're using the report spam feature when blocking, that data is sent to Google to help improve spam detection for everyone. It doesn't notify the caller that they were reported.
Block Spam from Email
If you're getting spam in your Gmail, open the app and find an unwanted email. Open it, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and select Block "[sender]". All future emails from that address will go straight to your Spam folder. To see your list of blocked senders, go to Gmail Settings > See all settings > [your account] > Blocked addresses.
Use Third-Party Call Blockers
For more powerful spam filtering, you can install an app like Truecaller from the Play Store. These apps maintain massive, crowdsourced databases of spam numbers and can block them automatically before your phone even rings. During setup, they'll ask for permission to manage your calls, which you need to grant for full system-wide blocking.
I've found that using the built-in Google spam filter catches most common telemarketers, so a third-party app is often only necessary if you're getting a very high volume of spam calls. It's worth trying the native tools first.
