Xbox is now actively advertising that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 won't be on Game Pass. A Facebook ad from Call of Duty's official account, spotted by a ResetEra user, explicitly tells casual audiences what the hardcore crowd already knew: this year's CoD ships October 23 without a day-one subscription option. The messaging marks a complete reversal.

Black Ops 6, the first Call of Duty released under the Xbox umbrella in 2024, launched simultaneously on Game Pass and at retail. The math worked then, with the title dominating both the subscription service and premium sales. But Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who took over earlier this year, has already cut Game Pass prices and axed new Call of Duty games from the service.

Now Microsoft is telling buyers to open their wallets instead. It's one thing for a subscription service to quietly lose a tentpole title. It's another to run paid ads about it. The shift from "everything day one" to "not on Game Pass" marketing signals how radically Xbox's strategy has changed under Sharma.

The scope of the reset extends beyond Call of Duty. According to Fernando Rizo, a consultant who advises indie studios, Xbox has suspended negotiations with third-party developers for new Game Pass deals.

Rizo told Eurogamer that developers who were actively negotiating "got the rug pulled out from under them." His impression is that the deals are "on pause" rather than canceled, as Sharma's team reassesses the entire subscription operation.

Those indie deals have been the backbone of Game Pass's release calendar for years, funding studios and filling the gaps between first-party blockbusters. If the pause becomes permanent, the service looks very different for subscribers and developers alike.

Modern Warfare 4 itself arrives October 23 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform in over a decade. Campaign early access is returning for digital pre-orders, and an expanded DMZ extraction mode is expected to be a major draw.

But anyone hoping to play it through a $20 Game Pass subscription is out of luck. Xbox would rather sell you a $70 copy.
