Sony's latest PS5 system software beta flips the "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" toggle on by default across every PS5 Pro game, replacing the original upscaler with PSSR 2.0 whether players touched the setting or not. The change means owners who never dug through their console's menus now get the sharper visuals and fewer frame-rate drops that the upgraded upscaler promised at launch.

The feature itself isn't new. Sony introduced PSSR 2.0 in March 2026 alongside Resident Evil: Requiem, but the option sat buried in Settings and was easy to miss.

That March update also added a system-level override that applies PSSR 2.0 to PSSR 1.0 games, even when a title doesn't natively support the newer version. Now the beta simply turns that override on by default for all PSSR supported games, so any PSSR 1.0 title in a player's library gets the upgraded treatment automatically.

The original PSSR launched with the PS5 Pro in November 2024 and had a rough start, with high-fidelity titles suffering from ghosting, artifacts, shimmering, and blurry visuals. Sony later released PSSR 2.0 with much better visual quality.

Given that over 100 games supported the original PSSR, not all of them have had the updated 2.0 version officially applied, which makes a global default switch meaningful for that library.

Players who prefer the original in-game settings can still opt out. PS5 Pro owners can head to Settings, Screen and Video, Video Output, and turn off "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" to disable the effect.

The rollout has clear boundaries for now. The feature is limited to participants in the PS5 Beta Program, who receive invites by email, and Sony has not confirmed when it will exit beta and reach all PS5 Pro users.

The beta update arrives as users are currently in the process of receiving it, and Sony's email invites to Beta Program participants detail the changes in plain wording.

For anyone already in the program, the update removes the guesswork: PSSR 2.0 switches on the moment the beta installs, no settings hunt required. Everyone else can manually enable the toggle in the meantime and get the same improved image quality in any game that uses PSSR.
