Rockstar Games has finally issued its first public statement on the week-long flood of Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, calling the situation "heartbreaking for our team" after remaining silent on the matter. The studio acknowledged in a post on Twitter that many fans had been waiting to hear from them regarding the events of the past week.
The leaks trace back to a person or organization calling themselves "CyberLeek," who has claimed responsibility for repeatedly sharing footage from an apparently playable build of the game. The wave of leaks has dominated the news cycle this past week, with the source drumming up attention through public manifestos, statements, and some cryptocurrency promotion on the side.
In the statement released across social media, Rockstar said it was "very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has" and noted the game is "nearly there" in terms of completion. The studio described the leaks as "obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time."
The leaks have escalated to the point where actual GTA 6 story spoilers were supposed to begin, as promised by CyberLeek, rather than just locations and normal gameplay. Publisher Take-Two Interactive has requested to be able to subpoena Microsoft and Discord over the copyright-infringing content in the hope of identifying the source of the leaks.
Rockstar's response arrives just ahead of an official extended look at the game that will stream exclusively on Netflix at 3PM ET. The long-awaited game itself is set to release on November 19th.
