PlayStation users in the UK and Ireland will need to verify their age beginning in June 2026 to continue sending messages or using voice chat, with the company planning broader global rollout later, according to an email from Sony Interactive Entertainment. The global policy locks communication features behind age checks while leaving core gameplay, trophies, and store access unaffected.
Messages and voice chat will become inaccessible without confirmation when the system launches globally later this year.
The company has specified that age confirmation will be required "Beginning June 2026" for UK and Ireland accounts, according to PlayStation's official FAQ, though exact global rollout dates beyond this initial phase have not been announced.
Players who opt out can still access games and the PlayStation Store but lose all communication capabilities.
The initiative aims to provide "safe, age-appropriate experiences for players and families while respecting their privacy," according to the email obtained by Insider Gaming. It follows similar moves by platforms like Discord and Roblox, which have introduced various age confirmation measures in recent months.
Unlike some competitor implementations that affect user-generated content access, PlayStation's restrictions appear limited strictly to communication tools. The policy currently applies to UK and Ireland markets first, with PlayStation's FAQ specifically addressing these regions.
No region-specific implementation dates have been announced for UAE or broader MENA markets.
The entertainment giant emphasized the system offers "meaningful control over their gameplay experiences" alongside safety benefits. The company has not detailed what age thresholds will trigger confirmation requirements or whether different age groups face varying restrictions.
The move matches trends toward enhanced online safety measures across video game platforms. Major companies face increasing pressure to protect younger audiences from inappropriate content and interactions in online environments.
PlayStation users can continue using all features normally until the age check system goes live. The company is expected to provide advance notice and detailed instructions when launching the global rollout later this year.
