Nintendo is using in-store kiosks to warn shoppers about the Switch 2 price increase, a move that contrasts sharply with how Sony handled the PS5's recent hike, according to Notebookcheck's report. x
The company announced the Switch 2 price change on May 8th, giving buyers 115 days of notice before it took effect. Japan was the exception, with fans there getting only a few weeks to prepare.
By comparison, PlayStation provided just 6 days' notice for its April 2nd PS5 price increase, and Xbox warned buyers 37 days in advance in its late-June bulletin.
Nintendo blamed the memory shortage for the Switch 2 price increase, though tariffs and other manufacturing challenges also factored into the decision. President Shuntaro Furukawa apologized for the move and explained that even at the new MSRP, Nintendo will absorb some of the higher component costs.
The handheld's price didn't rise as much as Xbox or PS5 consoles saw, and Furukawa's team continues transitioning loyalists from the original Switch. With the PS5 install base already established, a larger increase would have hit Nintendo's rival harder.
The kiosks ultimately encourage shoppers to embrace Nintendo's ecosystem and buy profitable Switch 2 games.
