Minecraft is getting a native Nintendo Switch 2 release on October 27, with Mojang Studios confirming the launch alongside a digital upgrade path for existing Switch owners. The best-selling video game of all time will arrive with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default, bringing enhanced lighting, improved shadow effects, and volumetric fog to the block-building sandbox.
The Switch 2 edition runs with Vibrant Visuals as its default graphical mode, a graphics upgrade Mojang first introduced in 2025. The visual overhaul includes enhanced lighting, improved shadow effects, volumetric fog, and other refinements designed to make the familiar Minecraft world look richer and more immersive.
Players who already own Minecraft on the original Switch will get a digital upgrade path, though Mojang has not yet shared specific details on pricing or the upgrade process. The developer says more information will be announced closer to launch.
Save data from the original Switch version will carry over to the Switch 2, so players can continue their existing worlds without starting over. That addresses concerns about losing progress when moving to the new hardware.
The Switch 2 version takes advantage of Nintendo's latest hardware, while Minecraft has been playable on the console through backward compatibility since its release. This dedicated version is optimized to make better use of the new system's capabilities.
The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft, is also receiving an update to get the most out of the Vibrant Visuals upgrade. The pack includes Mario-themed textures, music, skins, and recreations of locations such as Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza.
Vibrant Visuals won't be available in every situation on Switch 2. The feature will not appear during split-screen play or in certain Marketplace worlds and content, though supported Marketplace content will benefit from the enhancements.
The October 27 release follows closely after Minecraft Dungeons II, which is scheduled for September 29 across platforms including Switch and Switch 2. Mojang has pointed players to official channels for further updates on the upgrade path and any additional features in the weeks ahead.
