A Samsung screen mirroring application has been pulled from the Microsoft Store after locking users out of their primary C: drives on Windows 11 systems. Microsoft confirmed the Galaxy Connect app caused access denial errors that prevented file access and blocked applications including Office, browsers, and system utilities.
The issue emerged around March's Patch Tuesday update timing, leading users to initially blame Windows security updates. Microsoft's investigation determined the problem originated in Samsung's software rather than its own monthly updates.
"While the reports coincided with recent March Patch Tuesday timing, investigation confirmed the issue is not caused by current or previous Windows monthly updates," Microsoft stated in updated support documentation.
Affected devices include Samsung Galaxy Book 4 laptops and desktop models running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Users encountered "C:\ is not accessible, Access denied" messages when attempting to launch applications or access files stored on their primary system drives.
Microsoft temporarily removed the Galaxy Connect application from its store "to prevent further installations," while Samsung republished a stable previous version to stop recurrence on additional devices. The companies continue collaborating on solutions for already impacted systems, though workarounds remain limited for those experiencing complete drive lockouts.
Some users reported additional complications including inability to elevate privileges, uninstall updates, or collect system logs due to permission failures. The problematic behavior appears linked specifically to Samsung hardware configurations rather than affecting all Windows installations.
This marks an unusual public attribution of system instability to third-party software by Microsoft, which typically shoulders blame for Windows update-related issues. The company emphasized its ongoing partnership with Samsung to develop validated fixes for affected devices while preventing new installations of the problematic application version.
