Google Vids has swapped the text-to-speech engine behind its AI voiceovers and avatar narration for the Gemini 3.8 Flash Lite TTS model, a change the company says makes generated speech sound less mechanical. The upgrade is available now across both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, and it arrives with no admin control and no end user setting to configure.
The pitch to Vids users is twofold. Google says the new model improves sentence flow, pacing, and context-aware emphasis, which it claims cuts down on robotic cadences in narration. It also generates audio quickly enough that creators can revise a script and hear a preview in something close to real time, according to the announcement.

Availability covers a wide slice of Workspace. Business Starter, Standard, and Plus are included, along with Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus and Education Plus. Consumer access runs through Google AI Pro and Ultra, while Essentials Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Individual, and Nonprofits are also on the list. Education and other add-ons such as Google AI Pro for Education, Teaching and Learning, and AI Expanded Access round out the supported editions.
The change lands days after Google brought Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash into Vids, an update that improved video extension quality and added 1080p upscaling and duration control. Together the two moves push more of the tool's generation stack onto newer Gemini models, though this notice addresses only the voice side of that work.
The model name will be familiar to anyone tracking Google's speech releases. Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS were introduced earlier this month, with Google saying the full model took the top overall spot on Hume AI's Voice Design Benchmark at a score of 71.4 while both versions placed first and second on the same firm's Overall Quality Index. Those were Google's characterizations of third-party results rather than independently verified findings, and the company did not disclose pricing for either model at the time.
What this notice does not say is how the Lite variant compares with the full Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS on quality, or whether the earlier models remain in use anywhere in Vids. Google also gives no indication that the voiceover upgrade changes the range of voices or languages available to creators, only the engine generating them.
