Google’s News AI pilot program now includes more than 400 publications worldwide, with publishers receiving payments for enhanced content used to develop new AI features. Those features include article overviews that give readers context before clicking through and audio briefings that listeners can customize.
Google launched the program last year with participants including The Washington Post and The Washington Examiner. Its latest partners include CNN, Forbes and Axios, alongside local publishers such as Oil City News and Texas Tribune in the U.S.
The additions span global outlets and local news organizations, with The Financial Times and Post and Courier also joining the program. Shaw Media is another new U.S. participant in the licensing arrangement, through which Google pays publications for supplying enhanced content and for its use.
The article overviews appear on publisher pages within Google News. Google says the features provide explicit attribution and links directly to publishers, with the aim of helping readers connect with news sources they value.
