Apple's latest budget phone delivers flagship performance at a $599 starting price, narrowing the gap with its more expensive sibling to just a few key features. The iPhone 17e launched on March 2 with double the base storage of its predecessor while maintaining the same $599 price point.
For that money, buyers get 256GB of storage, MagSafe wireless charging, and Apple's current-generation A19 processor, the same chip powering the $799 iPhone 17.
This year's affordable model closes two major gaps that separated last year's iPhone 16e from Apple's flagship lineup. MagSafe support arrives after being conspicuously absent from the previous generation, enabling faster wireless charging and access to Apple's magnetic accessory ecosystem.
Storage jumps from 128GB to 256GB at the entry level, addressing one of the most common complaints about budget smartphones.
Performance differences between the two models have narrowed significantly. Both phones use Apple's A19 chip built on advanced 3-nanometer technology, though the iPhone 17e features a binned version with four GPU cores instead of five. In day-to-day use, most users would be hard-pressed to notice any difference in responsiveness or app performance.
Display technology also sees meaningful upgrades. The iPhone 17e sports Ceramic Shield 2 glass offering three times better scratch resistance than previous generations, matching the durability of pricier models in Apple's lineup. The Super Retina XDR OLED panel delivers up to 1200 nits peak brightness for HDR content.
Camera capabilities represent one area where differences remain more pronounced. The iPhone 17e uses a single 48MP Fusion sensor that employs computational photography to simulate an optical-quality 2x telephoto lens. By comparison, the standard iPhone 17 includes both main and ultrawide cameras, providing greater photographic versatility for those who frequently need wider shots.
Battery life should prove similar between models according to early analysis, though charging speeds diverge more noticeably. The iPhone 17 supports up to 40W wired charging compared to unspecified but likely slower rates on the budget model.
For many consumers upgrading from older iPhones or switching from Android devices, the experience gap has shrunk dramatically. Interface responsiveness feels identical thanks to shared silicon, photos still capture excellent detail in most conditions, and core software features including Apple Intelligence arrive on both devices simultaneously.
The question becomes what exactly $200 buys beyond those remaining differences. An ultrawide camera lens, potentially faster charging, and minor GPU enhancements may not justify the premium for users whose needs match mainstream smartphone usage patterns.
