A black screen on your new iPhone 17e can be a real shock, but it's often a temporary glitch rather than a permanent failure. The phone might be on but the display is frozen, or a software crash in iOS 26 has locked everything up. Let's get your screen back.

Force Restart Your iPhone 17e

This is almost always the first step that works. The process is quick and specific to your model. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then immediately press and release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button.

Keep holding that Side button even if the screen stays black for 10 to 15 seconds. You'll feel a vibration and then see the Apple logo appear once the restart sequence kicks in. This force restart works even when the touchscreen is completely dead.

Charge the Phone Properly

A totally flat battery will show nothing but a black screen. Grab your USB-C cable and plug it into a power adapter. Your iPhone 17e supports up to 20W wired charging, so any decent USB-C PD charger will work, you don't need the most expensive fast charger.

Leave it plugged in for a solid 30 minutes before trying to turn it on. If the battery was completely drained, it can take several minutes for any charging indicator to even appear. If you see nothing after half an hour, try a different cable and power source.

Check the Screen and Physical Buttons

Take a close look at the display for any cracks, dark splotches, or signs of a hard drop. Listen and feel for clues that the phone is still on. Does it vibrate for notifications? Can you trigger Siri by saying "Hey Siri"?

If the phone makes sounds or Siri responds, the main logic board and A19 chip are likely fine, but the display or its internal connector has a problem. Since this is a brand new 2026 model, a manufacturing defect is also a possibility.

Adjust the Display Brightness

It sounds simple, but sometimes the screen brightness gets turned all the way down. Since you can't see to adjust it, ask Siri to "turn up the brightness to maximum." You can also try blindly swiping down from the top-right corner to invoke Control Center and dragging your finger up the right edge.

Remember, the iPhone 17e doesn't have ProMotion, so you won't get the super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate of the Pro models. A flickering or dim screen isn't related to that feature.

Connect to a Computer for Recovery

If the force restart did nothing, it's time to involve a Mac or PC. Use your USB-C cable to connect your iPhone 17e to the computer. Open Finder on a Mac (or iTunes on a Windows PC).

If the computer recognizes the phone, it will give you options. Always click Update first. This reinstalls iOS 26 without touching your personal data. If the update fails or isn't available, you may need to use Restore, which will erase everything and install a fresh copy of the operating system.

Put Your iPhone 17e Into Recovery Mode

When the computer doesn't see the phone at all, Recovery Mode is the next step. First, connect the USB-C cable to your computer. With the cable connected, quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then immediately press and hold the Side button.

Don't let go when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen, which shows a USB cable pointing at a computer icon. At this point, your computer should offer the Update or Restore options.

Attempt a DFU Mode Restore

DFU, or Device Firmware Update, mode is the deepest restore possible. It's more complex but can fix stubborn software corruption. Connect your phone to the computer. Press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button for exactly 10 seconds.

After 10 seconds, while still holding the Side button, also press and hold the Volume Down button for 5 seconds. Then, release only the Side button, but keep holding the Volume Down button for another 10 seconds. If done correctly, the screen will remain completely black, but the computer will detect the device in recovery.

Consider Environmental Factors

The iPhone 17e is water-resistant, but it's not invincible. If it was recently exposed to moisture, liquid could have reached the display connectors. If you suspect this, power the phone off if you can and let it dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area for at least 48 hours.

Avoid using rice or a hairdryer, as both can cause further damage. I've also seen the A19 chip in these models run warm during heavy use, but that shouldn't cause a permanent black screen on its own. If the phone got excessively hot, it may have triggered a safety shutdown.
