Trying to find a page you visited earlier in Safari? The history controls sit in different places on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Here’s how to open your saved history, search it on Mac, and check the right places when an entry is missing.

Find your Safari history on iPhone

Safari’s history controls vary by iOS version and tab layout, so finding the right button starts with your setup.

On iOS 27, open Safari to your Start Page.

To create a new start page, tap Tabs.

Tap Add.

Tap History to view your browsing history.

There’s also a route through bookmarks. On the start page, tap Show Bookmarks.

Tap History. With the Bottom or Top Tabs layout, Show Bookmarks is also directly available in the browser controls.

On iOS 26 with the Compact layout, tap More.

Tap Bookmarks.

Tap History. This route applies specifically to the iOS 26 Compact layout.

Search the full history on Mac

This opens your retained history with a search field to help find a particular page.

Open Safari.

Choose History > Show All History from the menu bar.

Browse the entries to find the page you want.

To narrow the results, type in the Search field in the top-right corner.

For faster access next time, press Command-Y with Safari active.

On iPad, use the history sidebar

Open Safari on your iPad.

Tap Show Sidebar.

Select History to view your browsing history.

If History is missing, tap Back at the top of the sidebar to return to its main list, then select History.

Look back through the current tab’s history

Only need a page you visited in the same tab? Its navigation history gives you a shorter list to check. It covers that tab, rather than your complete browsing history.

On iPhone or iPad, open the relevant tab in Safari. Touch and hold Back or Forward to display its navigation history.

On Mac, press and hold Back or Forward to see page names. To display URLs instead, hold Option while pressing and holding either button.

Reopen a recently closed page

If you just closed the page, use the option for your device.

  1. 1.On iPhone with iOS 27, open Safari and tap Tabs. On iOS 26 with the Compact layout, open More > All Tabs instead.
  2. 2.On iPhone, touch and hold New Tab, then choose a recently closed tab.
  3. 3.On iPad, touch and hold New Tab in Safari, then choose a recently closed tab.
  4. 4.On Mac, choose History > Recently Closed, then select an entry.
  5. 5.For the Mac keyboard shortcut, press Shift-Command-T to reopen the last closed tab or window. Repeat it to step back through recently closed tabs.
  6. 6.To restore your previous browsing session on Mac, choose History > Reopen All Windows from Last Session.

Check another Safari profile

On iPhone with iOS 27, tap Tabs in Safari.

Tap More.

Open Profile.

Select the profile whose history you want to view.

Open History using the iPhone route above.

On iPad, tap the current profile’s name in the upper-left corner of Safari.

Tap Profile.

Choose the profile you want.

Tap Show Sidebar.

Select History.

On Mac, choose File > New [Profile] Window, using the name of your profile.

In that window, choose History > Show All History.

Each Safari profile has separate history, so check the profile you used when visiting the page.

Track down a missing page

If a visited page is missing, check your browsing mode and the device you used. Pages visited in Private Browsing are not added to Safari’s normal history, and closing private tabs does not create recoverable entries in that list.

For a page visited on another Apple device, sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All. Some versions label the expansion button Show All.

Turn on Safari.

On Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud.

Next to Saved to iCloud, click See All.

Turn on Safari.

Return to Safari’s History view to look for synced entries.

For older entries on Mac, check Safari > Settings > General > Remove history items.

Choose the retention interval you want. This controls how long history remains available; it does not recover entries already removed.

The Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data screen lists stored website data. It is not a dated page history or a way to recover deleted history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save a copy of Safari history on my iPhone?

Yes. On iOS 27, open Settings > Apps > Safari. Tap Export below History and Website Data. Select History. Choose the relevant profile or All Profiles. Tap Save to Downloads, then Done. Exported data is unencrypted.

Does Safari’s recent searches list show every website I visited?

No. Recent searches shows search terms, not the complete list of visited pages. Screen Time website reports and frequently visited suggestions are also separate from Safari’s full history.

How do I view Safari history on Apple Vision Pro?

Open Safari. Tap Show Sidebar, then select History. Stop there to view your entries; Clear removes history.

Can I use these instructions for Safari on Windows?

Apple no longer provides Safari updates for Windows and identifies Safari 5.1.7 as outdated. There is no current vendor-supported Safari history route for Windows.
