Safari downloads are easy to miss because the quickest button only appears when Safari has downloads to show. On iPhone, downloads live in the Files app unless you saved a photo or video to Photos. On Mac, start in Safari, then check Finder, the Dock, or Safari’s download setting when the file is not there.

Find Safari downloads on iPhone first

Use this right after downloading a file in Safari.

  1. 1.Open Safari.
  2. 2.Tap the Downloads button next to the search field.
  3. 3.Tap Downloads.
  4. 4.Tap the downloaded item you want to view.

Open the default iPhone Downloads folder

This fixes Safari downloads saved to iCloud Drive.

Open the Files app.

Tap Browse.

Open iCloud Drive.

Tap Downloads.

Check downloads saved on your iPhone

This method applies when Safari saves downloads locally instead of in iCloud Drive. It also confirms the current Safari download location.

Open Settings.

Tap Apps.

Tap Safari.

Open Downloads.

Select On My iPhone.

Open Files, tap Browse, choose On My iPhone, and open Downloads.

Choose a custom Safari download folder

Safari can save downloads to a specific Files location, including iCloud Drive, local storage, external storage, or a supported third-party file provider.

Open Settings, tap Apps, then choose Safari.

Tap Downloads.

Tap Other.

Choose the folder or location you want Safari to use.

Later, open Files, tap Browse, and go to that same folder.

If this method fails, search in Files by filename, folder name, or document type.

Search when the iPhone file is missing

Open the Files app.

Tap the search field.

Enter the file name, folder name, or document type.

Tap Recents or a location or tag scope to narrow the results.

Tap the file when it appears.

Use iPhone Search from the Home Screen or Lock Screen when you want to search across the device.

Tip: photos and videos saved from Safari belong in Photos under Collections and Recently Saved, not the Files download folder.

View Safari downloads on Mac

In Safari on Mac, click the Show Downloads button near the top-right corner of the Safari window. Apple hides that button when the downloads list is empty.

Double-click a downloaded item in the list to open it. Click the magnifying glass next to the filename to reveal its location in Finder.

If the file was moved after download, Safari cannot reveal it from the downloads list. Use Finder, Spotlight, or Safari settings next.

Open the Mac Downloads folder

This fixes the standard Mac setup where Safari saves files to the system Downloads folder.

In Finder or a file dialog, press Option-Command-L.

Click the Downloads folder or stack in the Dock.

Click an item to open it.

Click Open in Finder to view the folder.

If Downloads is missing from the Finder sidebar, make a Finder window active and choose View, then Show Sidebar.

Use Control-Command-S to show the sidebar from the keyboard.

Open Finder, choose Settings, open Sidebar, and select Downloads.

Check Safari download settings on Mac

The most common cause of an empty Downloads folder is Safari saving files somewhere else.

Open Safari.

Choose Safari, then Settings.

Open General.

Check File download location to see where new Safari downloads go.

Choose a different location if you want Safari to save future downloads elsewhere.

Use Remove download list items in the same General pane to control how long items stay in Safari’s download list.

Look in other places downloads appear

On Mac, Spotlight finds a Safari download when you know the name or file type. Press Command-Space bar, enter the search term, then double-click the result or select it and press Return; hold Command with the file selected to show its location.

Finder Recents helps with files you opened recently. Click the Finder icon in the Dock, open Recents, then use the Group button and Date Last Opened; the Apple menu and Recent Items show recently opened files too.

On Mac, an image from Safari lands in Photos only when you Control-click it and choose Add Image to Photos. Choose Save Image to “Downloads” or Save Image As and you get an ordinary file in a download folder instead. If you used Add Image to Photos, open Photos and check Recently Saved in the sidebar.

On managed iPhone and iPad devices, Safari downloads that originate from a configured managed web domain are treated as managed documents and follow Managed Open In restrictions. That affects where those files open or share, so use your organization’s approved app or location for those downloads. This is an iOS and iPadOS device management setting, not a Mac one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't I see the Downloads button in Safari?

On iPhone, the Downloads button appears only when Safari has download items or status to show. On Mac, the Show Downloads button is hidden when the downloads list is empty.

Where do Safari downloads go on iPhone by default?

Open Files > Browse > iCloud Drive > Downloads, unless you changed Safari’s download location to On My iPhone or another Files location.

How do I find a Safari download if I forgot the file name?

Search by document type in the Files app on iPhone or Spotlight on Mac. On Mac, Finder Recents and Apple menu > Recent Items help with files you opened recently.

Are Safari downloads the same as photos saved from Safari?

No. Photos and videos saved from Safari appear in Photos, such as Recently Saved, instead of the regular Downloads folder.
