You want your PS5 on a phone, computer, TV device, PS Portal, PS4, or another PS5, but Remote Play only works after the console and the client are set up the right way. Start on the PS5, use Sony's current PS Remote Play app or supported PlayStation device, and sign in with the same PlayStation account on both sides. The steps below cover the main setup first, then device-specific controls, pairing, quality settings, and connection fixes.

1. Prepare the PS5 before opening Remote Play

The PS5 has to allow Remote Play for the user account you want to use. Do this before installing apps or pairing controllers.

  1. 1.On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
  2. 2.Turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. 3.To connect while the PS5 is in rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. 4.Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  5. 5.Turn on Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.

Use the latest PS5 system software. Sony supports PS Remote Play on PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PS4/PS4 Pro host consoles, with PS5 Remote Play available on PS Portal, iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Windows PC, Mac, Android TV and Google TV devices, another PS5, and PS4.

2. Choose the official device path

Use Sony's official Remote Play page or the official store for your device. Windows PC and Mac use Sony's PS Remote Play download/start page.

  • Windows PC: Use Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11. Connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller by USB.
  • Mac: Use macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, or Tahoe. DualSense over Bluetooth needs macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later, DualSense Edge over Bluetooth needs macOS Ventura 13.3 or later, and DUALSHOCK 4 works over USB or Bluetooth.
  • iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or Android tablet: Install PS Remote Play from the App Store or Google Play. The current app needs Android 10 or later or iOS/iPadOS 15 or later. On Android, DUALSHOCK 4 works over Bluetooth on Android 10 or later and DualSense needs Android 12 or later; on iPhone and iPad, DUALSHOCK 4 and DualSense both work on iOS/iPadOS 15 or later.
  • Android TV or Google TV: Use a device running Android TV OS 12 or later. Sony lists Google TV Streamer 4K, Chromecast with Google TV 4K/HD, and BRAVIA XR A95L among supported devices. Voice chat and microphone features are not supported there.
  • PlayStation Portal: Use a PS5, a PlayStation account, broadband Wi-Fi or internet, and a powered-on or rest-mode PS5 paired with PS Portal.

Plan around Sony's Remote Play limits. Some games do not support it, VR and Camera-required titles are incompatible, and Remote Play cannot run alongside Share Play, PS Plus Premium streaming, Blu-ray or DVD playback, music, video services, and some broadcasting or Share Screen cases.

3. Start Remote Play on iPhone, iPad or Android

  1. 1.Install PS Remote Play from Google Play or the App Store.
  2. 2.Turn on the PS5 or put it in rest mode.
  3. 3.Open PS Remote Play.
  4. 4.Select Sign In.
  5. 5.Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
  6. 6.Select PS5.

On mobile, tap the screen during Remote Play to show the controller buttons. Select Options or Close at the bottom right to show or hide the control panel. The panel gives you Settings, Create button, PS button, Microphone status, Options button, and Close.

Mobile data has its own switch. Open PS Remote Play > Sign In > Settings > Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data > OK. The same area includes Notify Me When Using Mobile Data and Video Quality for Streaming. Carrier and network conditions can block mobile data use.

For background play on Android, tap the screen and select Options > Picture-in-Picture. On iPhone and iPad, open PS Remote Play > Settings > Background Streaming > OK. Sony says Remote Play can run in the background for up to 5 minutes on iPhone and iPad.

PlayStation App can launch a downloaded game into Remote Play when PS Remote Play is installed on the same mobile device. In PlayStation App, pair the console at Settings > Pair Console to App. Then open Game Library > Purchased, choose a downloaded game, and select Play on Console. To launch games from PS App while the PS5 is resting, the console needs Stay Connected to the Internet switched on.

4. Connect from Windows PC or Mac

Computer setup is short once the PS5 is prepared. Install PS Remote Play, turn on the PS5 or put it in rest mode, then use the same PlayStation account you use on the console.

  1. 1.Open PS Remote Play.
  2. 2.Select Sign In.
  3. 3.Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
  4. 4.Select Settings before choosing the console when you want to adjust video quality.
  5. 5.Select PS5.

On Windows, connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller by USB before starting. On Mac, connect a controller by USB or supported Bluetooth.

For Windows HDR, set the PS5 at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR to Always On or On When Supported. Install HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, open Windows Settings > System > Display, select the HDR display, and turn on HDR (called Use HDR under Windows HD Color settings on Windows 10), then open PS Remote Play > Settings > Video Quality for Remote Play and select Enable HDR.

5. Play through PS Portal, Android TV, PS4 or another PS5

PlayStation Portal connects to a paired PS5 from its home screen. With the PS5 online, signed in to the same account, updated, and set for Remote Play, tap the portal on the PS Portal home screen or press the cross button to connect to the previously used PS5.

For Android TV or Google TV, install PS Remote Play, pair a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4, launch the app, select Sign In, scan the QR code with a mobile device, sign in with the same account used on PS5, and select PS5. To pair DualSense, make sure the player indicator is off; when it is on, press and hold PS button until it turns off. Hold Create button, press and hold PS button for at least 3 seconds, then select the controller in Android TV Settings. To pair DUALSHOCK 4, hold SHARE, press and hold PS button, then select the controller in Android TV Settings.

For Android TV HDR, set the PS5 at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR to Always On or On When Supported. On Android TV, open PS Remote Play > Settings > Video Quality for Remote Play > HDR > Automatic. HDR requires the Android TV and PS5 console to be connected to HDR-capable displays.

Another PS5 can control the host PS5. On the client PS5, go to Games home > Remote Play, select Settings to configure video quality, select PS5, choose OK at Before connecting to your PS5, and sign in with the same account when prompted.

A PS4 can control a PS5 with a DUALSHOCK 4. From the PS4 home screen, select PS5 Remote Play, select Find Your PS5, use Settings to configure video quality, and sign in with the same account used on PS5.

6. Pair manually when the PS5 is not found

Use manual pairing when automatic discovery does not find the console. Keep the supported Remote Play client and PS5 on the same network for pairing.

  1. 1.On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device.
  2. 2.Look at the number shown on the PS5 screen.
  3. 3.Enter that number into the PS Remote Play app or Remote Play device when prompted.

To review devices that have connected through Remote Play, open Settings > System > Remote Play > Connection History.

To hide the Remote Play status message during gameplay when another user logs in, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Hide Remote Play Connection Status Pop-Up or Hide Remote Play Connection Status.

7. Fix connection failures with Sony's network checks

When Remote Play does not connect, check the basics in order. The PS5 must be on or in rest mode with Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network enabled. The client device must use the same PlayStation account as the PS5.

Then handle the network side. Use 5GHz Wi-Fi on networks that offer it. Use wired networking for PC or Mac. If the connection still fails, check the NAT Type inside the app: on PC, open Settings > Information; on Mac, open Preferences; on mobile, open Settings > NAT Type. Sony also lists opening UDP Port 8572 on the router, which requires router or ISP admin access.

Family controls do not include a Sony-documented Remote Play-only toggle. They can still affect what a child account can do while using Remote Play, because family managers can restrict games, apps, playtime, spending, and communication. On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child, and select a parental control. On the web, sign in to Account Management > Family Management, select the child, and select Edit. In PlayStation Family app, select the child, tap the Settings icon, then open Parental Controls.

8. End the session and skip outdated advice

End Remote Play from the client so you can choose what happens to the console. On Windows or Mac, click Close, select Put the connected console in rest mode when you want rest mode, then select OK. On mobile, tap the screen and select Options > Settings > Disconnect, select Put the connected console in rest mode when you want rest mode, then select OK.

On Android TV, press PS button > Disconnect, select Put the connected console in rest mode when needed, then select OK. On another PS5, press PS button > Remote Play card > Disconnect, then choose Leave Power On or Put in Rest Mode. On PS4, press PS button > Disconnect, then choose Leave Power On or Put in Rest Mode.

On PlayStation Portal, open the quick menu and select Disconnect. Turn on Put the connected PS5 in rest mode before disconnecting when you want the console to sleep. To switch consoles on PS Portal, quit Remote Play first, open the quick menu, select the PS5 icon, and select the PS5 console you want.

Ignore old setup paths that tell you to use the PS4 Remote Play app name for PS5 setup. Sony renamed that app to PS Remote Play in October 2020 and added PS5 support. Also skip PS Vita and PS TV instructions for PS5; Sony's current matrix lists PS Vita and PS TV only for controlling a PS4 through PS4 Link.
