Prepare your PC and wireless display
Your PC needs compatible graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and drivers, and the receiving display needs Miracast support. Select the taskbar Network, Sound, or Battery icons, then turn on Wi-Fi. Press Windows + K to check wireless display availability. A PC without support may report that a cable is required.
Turn on your compatible TV or projector and enable its Miracast receiver. On a TV with Miracast support, open its input or source menu and select Screen Mirroring, Miracast, or Wireless Display, depending on the model.
For a Microsoft 4K Wireless Display Adapter, connect its HDMI plug to the display and its USB plug to power. Select the corresponding HDMI input on the display. This setup requires a display with HDMI and a Miracast-capable Windows 11 PC.
Connect from Windows 11
With the receiver turned on, press Windows + K on your PC and select the receiver’s name. If your TV displays a connection request, approve it using the controls described below for your receiver.
For a taskbar route, select Network, choose Cast, then select the receiver. In Windows 11, use these controls or Windows + K when older instructions refer to Action center > Connect.
You can also open Settings > System > Display, then expand Multiple displays. Beside Connect to a wireless display, select Connect and choose the receiver.
To reach those controls through Windows Search, search for Cast and select Connect to a wireless display. Under Multiple displays, find Connect to a wireless display, select Connect, then choose the receiver.
For a compatible Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Select Add device, choose Wireless display or dock, then select the adapter. You only need one of these connection methods to start projecting.
Choose your screen layout and disconnect
After connecting, press Windows + P to choose how the screens work together. Select Duplicate to show the same screen on both displays, or Extend to use the wireless display as additional desktop space. Choose Second screen only to show your desktop only on the external screen.
The same menu offers PC screen only to return output to your computer’s screen. To end the active wireless connection, press Windows + K and select Disconnect.
Connect to your TV or streaming device
On a compatible LG TV, press Windows + K on the PC and select the TV under Available displays. At the TV’s connection request, select Accept. LG says menus can differ by model.
For Samsung Smart TVs supporting Screen Sharing, connect the TV and PC to the same Wi-Fi network. Open Home > Daily+, choose Easy Connection or Remote PC (Windows PC), then select Screen Sharing. Samsung says Daily+ availability varies by model and region.
On your PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Wireless display or dock and select the Samsung TV. If the TV asks for permission, select Allow.
With a supported Roku receiver, select it through Windows + K, then select Allow on the TV. Choose Always allow to permit future requests from that device. Select Block to reject the current request, or Always block to reject future requests too.
Roku supports mirroring on most current players and Roku TVs, but excludes Express 3700 and Express+ 3710. Express+ 3910 requires HDMI output. To end mirroring from the Roku remote, press Home.
For a compatible Fire TV, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. On Fire TV, open Settings > Display & Sounds > Enable Display Mirroring, then press Windows + K on your PC and select the Fire TV. Amazon says a Fire TV without Enable Display Mirroring does not support this method. Press any button on the Fire TV remote to end mirroring.
Use another Windows PC as the receiving screen
To project onto another compatible PC, install Wireless Display on the receiving computer. This optional feature is for receiving projections; you do not need to install it to send your screen to a TV. The receiving PC still needs Miracast-compatible hardware.
On the receiving PC, open Settings > System > Optional features. Beside Add an optional feature, select View features, search for Wireless Display, and check Wireless Display. Select Next, then Add. Some supported Windows 11 builds place Optional features under Apps instead.
Next, open Settings > System > Projecting to this PC to manage reception preferences. On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, search for Wireless Display and open the app. From the sending PC, press Windows + K and select the receiving computer.
On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, open Wireless Display when older instructions refer to the Connect receiver app. Install and launch the receiver on the computer that will display the other PC’s screen.
Update a Microsoft wireless display adapter
If you own compatible Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter hardware, install the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter app to manage it. This companion app is separate from the Wireless Display optional feature used for PC reception.
Connect your PC to the adapter and open Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. Select Update & security, then select Update when an update is available. Keep the app open and the connection active during the update. You can also turn on Update adapter automatically.
Fix a receiver that will not connect
Check that Wi-Fi is on, the receiver is powered, and its mirroring mode or correct HDMI input is selected. For Samsung Screen Sharing and Fire TV, confirm that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. Check the TV for a connection request that still needs approval.
If a saved receiver will not reconnect, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Under Wireless displays & docks, select the receiver and choose Remove device. Press Windows + K and select the receiver again.
To reset a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, remove it from the second display. Hold its reset button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks, then reconnect it. Wait for the Ready to connect message, then select taskbar Network > Cast and choose the adapter.
Install or remove the PC receiver with commands
You can also manage the receiver feature with administrator commands on Windows 11 installations where the capability is available. The DISM method applies to Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education. In a Command Prompt opened with administrator privileges, run this command to install it:
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:App.WirelessDisplay.Connect~~~~0.0.1.0To remove an installed receiver feature, use the removal command instead. Run it in a Command Prompt with administrator privileges:
DISM /Online /Remove-Capability /CapabilityName:App.WirelessDisplay.Connect~~~~0.0.1.0Windows PowerShell offers another installation method when the capability is available and its feature source is accessible. Open Windows PowerShell with administrator privileges and run:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name 'App.WirelessDisplay.Connect~~~~0.0.1.0'You can also remove the installed feature through Windows PowerShell. With administrator privileges, run:
Remove-WindowsCapability -Online -Name 'App.WirelessDisplay.Connect~~~~0.0.1.0'Use Miracast in a managed workplace
To project to a Teams Room on Windows or a Surface Hub, the receiver needs Teams Rooms Pro licensing and administrator-enabled Miracast. From a Miracast-capable Windows laptop, press Windows + K and select the room. Press Windows + P and choose Duplicate or Extend.
Where offered, check Allow mouse, keyboard, and other input from this device to permit receiver-side control of your laptop. Enable it when you want to control the laptop from the receiving device.
If you administer Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, or an applicable IoT Enterprise edition, open the Group Policy path Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Connect. Disable Don't allow this PC to be projected to to permit normal receiver configuration, and configure Require pin for pairing as needed. These policies do not apply to Windows 11 Home.
For managed devices on those editions, configure MDM projection policies under ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/WirelessDisplay/. The policies AllowProjectionFromPC and AllowProjectionToPC control sending and receiving, while AllowProjectionFromPCOverInfrastructure and AllowProjectionToPCOverInfrastructure control infrastructure transport. Use AllowUserInputFromWirelessDisplayReceiver to control receiver-side input. For these policies, 1 permits the behavior and 0 restricts it.
Configure RequirePinForPairing with 0 for no PIN, 1 for the first pairing, or 2 for every pairing.
