Use the built in emote commands
Join an experience and press / on your keyboard, or tap the chat icon on your phone or tablet. Enter a supported command and send it with Enter or Return on a keyboard, or send it through the touchscreen chat interface. For a wave, enter this command:
/e waveYou have seven built-in choices: /e wave, /e point, /e cheer, /e laugh, /e dance, /e dance2, and /e dance3. These commands support both R6 and R15 avatars, although experience scripts can change their availability.
In experiences using Roblox's default chat commands, you can also use the longer /emote alias. To dance with that form, enter this command and send it:
/emote danceOpen the emote wheel on a computer or phone
Click or tap the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner of the experience, then select Emotes. Choose an available animation in the wheel to perform it. The experience must enable the standard wheel for this route to work.
On a keyboard, press . without holding Shift to toggle the wheel. Once it is open, click an emote or press the number key matching an occupied slot, from 1 through 8. Those number shortcuts select emotes while the wheel is open.
If older instructions point you to an upper-right three-dot menu, use the upper-left hamburger menu instead. Roblox also removed the original universal B and D-pad Down emote shortcuts. Individual experiences can still assign those buttons themselves, so check their controls if the standard shortcut does not work.
Select emotes with a controller or in VR
With a controller, once the emote wheel is open, use the left stick to highlight an occupied wheel segment. Confirm with A on Xbox or Cross on PlayStation.
If your console or experience uses a different layout, open the Roblox menu and select Help to check your device's control map. Follow the experience's published instructions for any custom emote shortcuts.
In VR, Roblox supports emotes, and the Bottom Bar that follows your view gives you access to the in-game menu and Core UI toggles. Use the controller's laser pointer to select interface options, and check your device's control scheme for the selection input, since the buttons differ between controllers.
Equip emotes in your avatar settings
On mobile, open the Me tab and tap Customize to edit your avatar. If you do not see Me yet, look for Avatar instead, since it is the same tab. Find an owned emote and equip it to one of your wheel slots.
You can equip up to eight emotes for the wheel. Assign the animations you want to those slots, then select them from the wheel in a compatible experience. An empty slot has no animation to play.
Through Roblox's website, sign in and open Avatar to access the Avatar Editor. Select an owned emote and assign it to one of the eight wheel slots. Marketplace emotes generally require a compatible R15 character, and the experience must allow your owned emotes to load.
Get more emotes through Marketplace
On a phone, open More > Marketplace; on a tablet, open Marketplace directly. Search for the emote you want and open its item page. Check its price and availability before buying.
For a paid emote, select Buy, then Buy Now, followed by Continue Shopping. Return to the Avatar Editor and equip it in a wheel slot. Buying an emote does not guarantee that every experience will let you use it.
Play owned emotes by name
You can play an owned emote through chat without giving it a wheel slot. Enter /e followed by the emote's name and send the command in a compatible experience. For an owned emote named Salute, enter:
/e saluteFor this route, you need accessible chat and a compatible avatar, and the experience must load your owned emotes. If the creator has replaced the default commands, follow that experience's controls.
Use an experience's own emote controls
If an experience supplies its own emote buttons, menus, or shortcuts, follow its published controls. For example, Anime Strike uses B for emotes on PC and D-pad Left on console. Those bindings apply to that experience, so do not assume they work throughout Roblox.
In an experience using the optional Emote Bar, click or tap an emote button along the bottom of the screen. The creator chooses the available emotes and pages. If the experience uses the module's character selection wheel instead, click or tap your own character, then select an animation from the displayed ring.
Fix missing or unavailable emotes
When a chat command does not work, check that you can use experience chat. Complete the required age check, then open Settings > Privacy & content restrictions > Communication > Experience chat and enable permitted access. Regional restrictions can affect eligibility, and children ages 5 to 9 also need parental consent.
To manage a child's permission from a linked parent account, open Settings > Parental Controls > Settings You Manage > Communication > Experience chat. Allow eligible chat access there; age-check, consent, and regional requirements still apply. The wheel is not a guaranteed workaround when chat is disabled.
If an animation is missing from your wheel, check that you assigned it to a slot and that your avatar supports it. Try a built-in command to check whether basic animations work even when an owned emote does not. Built-in commands support R6 and R15, while Marketplace emotes generally need a compatible R15 character.
If the experience creator hides the standard wheel or prevents user-owned emotes from loading, you cannot override those controls as a player. Hiding the wheel alone does not disable chat emotes, so try a supported command when chat is accessible. If the experience supplies a custom emote menu, use its published controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make an emote play faster?
In experiences that enable Emote Bar tempo controls, tap the same emote button rhythmically to change its playback speed. You can use this feature only where the creator enables it.
How do group emotes work in Roblox?
You can contribute to Emote Bar mega emotes by performing the same emote near other players simultaneously. The experience must enable mega emotes, so follow its instructions for participating.
Are facial animations and voice lip-sync emotes?
Your camera facial animation and voice lip-sync are separate expression features. They are not stored emotes that you select from the emote wheel.
Do you need to reinstall Roblox to enable emotes?
You do not need to reinstall Roblox merely to enable emotes. Reinstallation is not a prerequisite for using the emote commands or menu.
Do all Roblox experiences support sit and stop commands?
You cannot rely on /e sit, /e stop, or /e dance4 as universal Roblox emote commands. Use them only when an experience explicitly supports them.
