Windows audio gets confusing fast because the sound equalizer is not always in Windows itself. For most people, the right fix is the equalizer inside the app they are using, then Windows audio enhancements, then a system-wide tool when one app is not enough. Use the paths below to tune the right audio source without chasing old Groove Music or Windows Media Player Legacy instructions.
Pick the right equalizer first
The most common cause of equalizer confusion in Windows is expecting one built-in graphic EQ to control every PC and every app.
Use the player equalizer when you only need to change one app.
Use your PC or headphone maker's app when the tuning comes from the device or audio driver.
Use a system-wide equalizer app when you want broader Windows audio processing.
Skip Groove Music equalizer tutorials and Windows Media Player Legacy Graphic equalizer steps. Groove has been replaced by the current Windows Media Player app, and Windows Media Player Legacy is an optional legacy feature.
Use Windows Media Player for local files
Use this when your audio or video file is playing inside the current Windows Media Player app from Microsoft Store. It changes Windows Media Player playback only, so other apps keep their own sound.
Open Windows Media Player and start playing a file.
In the player controls, select More options (...).
Choose Equalizer.
Turn Equalizer on.
Choose a preset or adjust the nine bands manually.
On Windows 11 N editions, install the Media Feature Pack from Start > Settings > Apps > Optional features, select View features next to Add an optional feature, then select the Media Feature Pack. On Windows 10 N editions, use Start > Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > Optional features > Add a feature, then find the Media Feature Pack in the list. Windows will not prompt you, but restart your PC to finish the install and restore Microsoft media playback components.
Check Windows audio enhancements
Open Start > Settings > System > Sound, choose your output device, then open Device Properties or Properties.
Go to Additional device properties, then check Enhancements and Advanced for the equalizer or sound effects exposed by your audio driver.
Microsoft provides the Windows surface, but the actual Equalizer option comes from the PC or audio-driver vendor. When effects make audio worse, use Disable all enhancements, Disable all sound effects, or clear Enable audio enhancements.
For headphone spatial processing rather than EQ bands, use Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the playback device under Output devices, open Device Properties > Spatial sound, choose Windows Sonic for Headphones, then select Apply.
Change Spotify playback
Open the Spotify desktop app.
Select your profile picture and open Settings.
Go to Playback.
Switch Equalizer on.
Choose a preset or drag the dots to shape the sound.
For pure playback in Spotify Premium Exclusive mode, keep Equalizer off; that mode works with compatible external DACs and audio interfaces, not Bluetooth, built-in speakers, or virtual audio devices.
Tune Apple Music and iTunes
Apple's Windows apps keep their EQ changes inside the app you use.
In Apple Music, select Sidebar Actions, choose Equalizer, turn it On, then pick a preset or drag the frequency sliders.
For a per-song Apple Music preset, select the song's More button, open Properties > Options, choose an equalizer setting from the pop-up menu, then select OK.
For Apple Music sound widening, open Sidebar Actions > Settings > Playback, then turn on Sound enhancer.
In iTunes for Windows, choose View > Show Equalizer, then drag the sliders.
To save an iTunes preset, choose Make Preset from the pop-up menu; use Edit List to rename or delete presets.
Tune videos in VLC
VLC's 10-band graphical equalizer changes playback inside VLC on Windows and GNU/Linux. It does not change the rest of Windows.
Open VLC > Tools > Effects and Filters > Audio Effects > Equalizer.
Check Enable, then choose a preset or adjust the 10 sliders.
Add a system wide sound equalizer
This fixes app-only limits when you want a sound equalizer for normal Windows audio.
Download Equalizer APO from the official SourceForge project page.
Run the setup.
When Configurator.exe opens, select the audio device you want to process.
Finish installation and restart your PC.
Edit C:\Program Files\EqualizerAPO\config\config.txt or use the included configuration tools.
Choose FxSound instead when you want a Windows audio enhancer with equalization, effects, and presets from the official FxSound download page or Microsoft Store.
Check the app's output mode when a system-wide EQ does not work; apps using ASIO or WASAPI exclusive mode bypass system effects and are not affected by Equalizer APO.
Use PC and headset maker EQ apps
Manufacturer equalizers matter when your PC, headphones, or gaming software came with its own audio suite.
For Surface Headphones, open the Surface app, choose Surface Headphones > Equalizer, then select a preset or adjust sliders and save a custom preset with the check mark.
For supported ASUS PCs or motherboards with Dolby Atmos, open Start > Dolby Access > Settings, then choose Music, Movies, Games, Voice, or customize a profile.
For MSI systems with Nahimic, open Nahimic > Audio settings, choose Music, Movie, Communication, Gaming, or Smart, then click Equalizer to adjust EQ or choose a preset mode.
For supported Dell systems, open Waves MaxxAudio Pro > Playback, enable Playback, then adjust the available audio or equalizer settings.
For SteelSeries Sonar, install and open SteelSeries GG, then sign in to your SteelSeries account or create one. Select Sonar in the left menu, start the onboarding, and choose the playback device (headset or speaker) for each audio channel. Then use its Parametric EQ presets or up to 10 dot bands.
For Realtek systems, install the audio driver or app from the PC or motherboard manufacturer, then open Realtek Audio Console or Realtek HD Audio Manager and use the supplied Equalizer or Sound Effects controls.
Remove broken EQ processing
This fixes unwanted processing from an equalizer app, a damaged media-player setting, or a broken vendor audio effect.
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Find the equalizer app.

Choose Uninstall.
For Windows Media Player app problems, open Windows Media Player from Installed apps.
