When your Roblox app, store build, or Studio falls behind, Roblox can show a message that your version may be out of date and ask you to update before you try again. The fix depends on where you installed it: Roblox.com, an app store, a console store, or Roblox Studio itself. Start with your device below, then use the reinstall steps when the normal update path still leaves Roblox stuck.
Update Roblox on iPhone or iPad
Open the App Store.
Tap the My Account button or your profile photo.
Tap App Updates.
Tap Update next to Roblox, or tap Update All.
To keep Roblox current, open Settings, tap Apps, tap App Store, and turn App Updates on.
Roblox currently requires iOS 14.0 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 14.0 or later on iPad.
Fix Roblox updates on Android
On Android, Roblox updates through Google Play, so start by checking for a pending update there.
Open the Google Play Store.
Tap your profile icon and open Manage apps & device.
Under Updates available, tap See details.
Tap Update next to Roblox, or tap Update all.
For automatic updates, tap your profile picture, open Settings, tap Network Preferences, tap Auto-update apps, then choose Update all apps over Wi-Fi or mobile data or Update over Wi-Fi only. Some accounts also see Update with limited amount of mobile data, but Google offers that option only to a limited group.
To update only Roblox automatically, open Manage apps & device, tap Manage, choose Roblox, tap More, and turn on Enable auto update.
Use Roblox.com on Windows
This method applies when you use the regular Roblox Player on a Windows desktop or laptop instead of the Microsoft Store version. Roblox installs and refreshes the Player when you launch an experience from its website.
Open Roblox in Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Chrome.
Log in to your Roblox account.
Open any experience and click the green Play button.
Follow the Roblox Player installation pop-up, then launch the experience again.
When Error Code 280 says your version is out of date, uninstall Roblox, restart the PC, then reinstall Roblox from Roblox.com.
Switch to the current Microsoft Store app
On Windows, Roblox identifies Roblox - Windows as the new Microsoft Store app. The older Microsoft Store app is named Roblox, and Roblox says it will eventually stop working, so switch to the new app to keep playing.
Open the Microsoft Store, search for Roblox - Windows, and install it. Sign in with your usual Roblox username and password, then complete the one-time prompt to link your Roblox account with your Xbox account.
After the new app works, uninstall the older Microsoft Store app named Roblox.
If the Microsoft Store version still does not update, open Microsoft Store and select Check for Updates. You can also open Library and select Get updates.
Reinstall Roblox on Mac
Select the Roblox app and drag it to the Trash.
Or select the Roblox app, choose Move to Trash from the menu bar, or press Command-Delete.
Open the official Roblox download page.
Choose Download Mac App and reinstall Roblox.
Use this repair path when Roblox is outdated or broken on macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later.
Update Roblox on PlayStation or Xbox
Use these steps when Roblox is installed on a console and the game will not launch because an update is missing. Console updates run through the console’s own game and app update system.
On PlayStation, highlight Roblox, press the OPTIONS button, and choose Check for Update. If an update appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
For automatic updates on PS5, open Settings, go to System, select Power Saving, open Features Available in Rest Mode, and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Then go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings, open Automatic Updates, and turn on Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
On PS4, open Settings, go to System, open Automatic Downloads, and tick Application Update Files. Then open Power Saving Settings, select Set Features Available in Rest Mode, and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
On Xbox, make sure the console is online and launch Roblox, which is the fastest way to pick up a pending update. To check the queue yourself, open My games & apps, go to Manage, open Updates, and select the available Roblox update.
To keep Xbox updates automatic, press the Xbox button, open Profile & system, go to Settings, then System, then Updates, and select Keep my console up to date plus Keep my games & apps up to date.
Refresh Roblox on Chromebook or Fire tablet
On a Chromebook, Roblox updates through Google Play, and ChromeOS itself may also need an update.
When ChromeOS shows Updates available at the bottom right, select Update or Update all.
To update manually, open the Launcher, select the Up arrow, open Play Store, and follow the on-screen instructions to update apps.
If Roblox still shows an outdated-version message on ChromeOS, select the time, open Settings, go to About ChromeOS, and choose Check for updates. Restart to finish when prompted.
On Fire OS, swipe down from the top of the screen, open Settings, go to Apps & Games, open Manage All Applications, select Roblox, tap Uninstall, and reinstall Roblox from the Amazon Store.
Clean up a broken Windows install
Use this when Roblox on Windows keeps saying the version is out of date after a normal reinstall.
- 1.Uninstall Roblox from Windows.
- 2.Press Win+R, type CMD, and press Enter.
- 3.Run cd AppData\Local.
- 4.Run rmdir /s Roblox, then enter y when prompted.
- 5.Restart your computer and reinstall Roblox.
Update Roblox Studio
Open Roblox Studio.
If Studio is outdated, click Update in the upper-right corner.
When prompted, save and close the currently open place.
Let Studio update and restart.
If Studio will not update cleanly, click Download Studio, click Download Studio again in the pop-up, open RobloxStudio.exe on Windows or RobloxStudio.dmg on Mac, click Launch Studio, and sign in.
Use only Roblox.com, Roblox Studio, or your device’s official store; modified clients, third-party APKs, and unofficial download portals should be removed and replaced with the official Roblox version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Roblox say my version is out of date?
Roblox Error Code 280 appears when there is a problem with the Roblox version running on your device. On phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, also make sure the date and time are correct. Update Roblox first, then reinstall it if the message returns.
Can I update Roblox from inside the Roblox app?
Update Roblox through the place you installed it: Roblox.com, the App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Store, the Amazon Store, or your console’s update system. Roblox Studio is different, because it shows its own Update button when a new version is ready.
How do I update Roblox on Meta Quest?
Make sure the headset runs Meta Quest software v57 or higher, then install or reinstall Roblox from the Quest Store. Roblox supports Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3, not Meta Quest 1.
What if Roblox is on a school or work device?
On a school or work device, the organization can control when Roblox updates. If the store will not update Roblox, ask the device owner or IT admin to push the latest version through their device management tool.
