To delete WhatsApp from an iPhone, touch and hold its icon, then tap Remove App, Delete App and Delete; on Samsung Galaxy, touch and hold its icon, then tap Uninstall and OK. On other Android phones with Google Play Store, you can open WhatsApp’s installed-app listing and tap Uninstall.

Uninstalling WhatsApp does not permanently delete your WhatsApp account. Back up your chats first if restoring them later matters to you, and complete account deletion inside WhatsApp before uninstalling if you want to close the account permanently. Removing a Home Screen shortcut, hiding WhatsApp, clearing its cache or uninstalling updates does not uninstall the app.

The short version

  • iPhone: Touch and hold WhatsApp, tap Remove App, tap Delete App, then tap Delete.
  • Samsung Galaxy: Touch and hold WhatsApp, tap Uninstall, then tap OK.
  • Other Android phones: With Google Play Store and a removable WhatsApp installation, open its installed-app listing and tap Uninstall.
  • Permanent deletion: Delete your account inside WhatsApp on the logged-in primary phone before uninstalling if you want to close it permanently.

Delete WhatsApp from an iPhone

Touch and hold the WhatsApp icon on your Home Screen, then tap Remove App. Tap Delete App, then tap Delete to confirm. This removes the app without permanently deleting your WhatsApp account.

If you removed WhatsApp from the Home Screen without hiding it, swipe left past your last Home Screen page to reach App Library. Tap the search field to open the alphabetical list and find WhatsApp. Touch and hold its icon, tap Delete App, then tap Delete.

A hidden WhatsApp does not appear in App Library search. Tap the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Touch and hold WhatsApp, tap Don’t Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode), then authenticate. WhatsApp moves near the top of App Library, where you can touch and hold it, tap Delete App, then tap Delete.

You can also remove WhatsApp through storage settings. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage > WhatsApp, then choose the option to delete the app. This removes the app and its related data.

Uninstall WhatsApp from an Android phone

On a Samsung Galaxy with a removable WhatsApp installation, find the app on the Home Screen or Apps screen. Touch and hold its icon, tap Uninstall, then tap OK. Alternatively, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp, tap Uninstall, then tap OK.

On a Google Pixel, touch and hold the WhatsApp icon, then drag it to Uninstall at the top of the screen and release it. Choose Uninstall rather than Remove, which only removes the Home Screen shortcut.

Google Play Store gives you another route if your Android phone has the store and a removable WhatsApp installation. Open Google Play Store, search for WhatsApp and open its installed-app listing. Tap Uninstall to start removal.

On Xiaomi phones with a Manage apps menu, open Settings > Apps > Manage apps > WhatsApp. Tap Uninstall to remove the app.

On Huawei phones with a native WhatsApp installation and the Apps > Apps interface, open Settings > Apps > Apps > WhatsApp. Tap Uninstall to start removal. These steps apply to that Huawei interface, not HarmonyOS NEXT.

Permanently delete your WhatsApp account

If you want to permanently close your account, complete account deletion before uninstalling WhatsApp. Deletion is irreversible and must be done on the logged-in primary phone, not a linked device. On iPhone, it removes your account information, group membership and WhatsApp message-history backup.

On Android, open WhatsApp and tap More Options > Settings > Account, then tap Delete my account. Enter your phone number in full international format and tap Delete account. Choose a reason from the dropdown, then tap Delete account again.

On iPhone, open WhatsApp and tap Settings or your profile picture. Tap Account, then tap Delete My Account. Enter your phone number in full international format, then tap Delete My Account.

After deleting the account, remove WhatsApp using your phone’s uninstall controls. Account deletion and app removal are separate tasks, so finish both if you want to close the account and remove the application.

Remove a separate WhatsApp copy

If you use WhatsApp inside Samsung’s Secure Folder, open the folder from the Apps screen and authenticate. Touch and hold WhatsApp inside it, tap Uninstall, then tap OK. That copy operates independently of the one outside the folder, so remove each copy you no longer want.

For a second WhatsApp instance created with Samsung’s Dual Messenger, open Settings > Advanced features > Dual Messenger. Turn off the WhatsApp switch, then tap Uninstall. This removes the second instance and its data.

On Xiaomi phones offering Dual apps, open Settings > Apps > Dual apps and turn off the WhatsApp copy. Removing the clone leaves the original app installed. Uninstalling the original also removes its associated clone and the clone’s data.

Allow removal when your phone blocks it

If Screen Time prevents deletion on your iPhone, Apple’s current troubleshooting article says to open Settings > Screen Time > Apps & Websites > Restrictions. Under Deleting Apps, choose Allowed. You need the appropriate Screen Time authority or passcode, then you can repeat the uninstall steps.

If your Screen Time menus differ, Apple also documents the restriction under Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases. Check that route for the app-deletion restriction when it matches your phone’s menus. Changing the permission allows deletion but does not itself remove WhatsApp.

If your Galaxy phone has a preinstalled WhatsApp copy that cannot be uninstalled and offers Disable, touch and hold the app’s icon. Tap Disable, then tap Disable again. Disabling leaves the application installed.

Keep local data with offloading or archiving

To remove WhatsApp’s software from an iPhone while retaining its documents and data, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage > WhatsApp. On that detail screen, choose the option to offload the app. Offloading does not delete your WhatsApp account.

On supported Android 15 or later phones where Archive is offered, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp and tap Archive. Archiving removes the software, permissions and temporary files while retaining the icon and personal data. It also leaves your WhatsApp account intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you uninstall WhatsApp from another Android phone?

Yes, Google Play supports remote uninstall when both devices use the same Google Account and the target phone appears in its device dropdown. On the controlling phone, open Google Play Store, tap the profile picture, then open Manage apps & device > Manage. Choose the target phone from the device dropdown and select WhatsApp. Tap the Uninstall trash-bin icon, then tap Uninstall.

Can you log out of WhatsApp instead of uninstalling it?

Yes, on Android WhatsApp versions offering primary-device logout, open WhatsApp and tap More Options > Settings > Account. Tap Log out, then tap Log out again. The app stays installed, and your chats and account information are retained. Linked devices can remain connected for 14 days.

How do you disconnect WhatsApp on a companion phone?

On your primary Android phone, open WhatsApp and tap More options > Linked devices. Select the companion phone and tap Log out. This disconnects its session but does not uninstall WhatsApp from that phone.

Can you delete WhatsApp from an iPhone using voice controls?

Yes, you can operate the deletion controls with Voice Control configured in a supported language. Open Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control, tap Set Up Voice Control and follow the onscreen instructions. With WhatsApp visible on the Home Screen, say Long press WhatsApp, then say Tap Remove App, Tap Delete App and Tap Delete, in order.

Can you uninstall WhatsApp on Android using Voice Access?

Yes, with Voice Access configured, start listening through its activation button or notification and move to WhatsApp’s system app-information screen. Say Tap Uninstall; if the confirmation is labeled OK, say Tap OK. Confirmation labels vary by device, and Android private space does not support voice commands.
