Uninstalling Citrix Workspace on your Mac doesn’t end when you drag the app to the Trash. You also need to quit Workspace and complete Citrix’s removal prompts. Start with the Trash method below, or use the disk-image or Terminal uninstaller to finish the job.

Remove Citrix Workspace through the Trash

On current versions, moving Workspace to the Trash starts Citrix’s supported removal process.

Citrix introduced complete removal through dragging in version 2206.1. Older versions could leave system files behind, which explains older advice against this method. That limitation does not apply to the supported removal process in current versions.

  1. 1.With Workspace active, choose Citrix Workspace™ > Quit Citrix Workspace.
  2. 2.Open Finder > Applications.
  3. 3.Drag Citrix Workspace to the Trash, called Bin on some Macs.
  4. 4.Enter your Mac credentials when prompted.
  5. 5.Close any remaining Citrix Workspace apps, then click Continue to finish removal.

If you prefer a menu control, select Workspace in Finder and choose File > Move to Trash. This combines Apple’s documented Finder control with Citrix’s supported removal process; Citrix does not separately document it as an uninstall method.

You can also press Command-Delete with the application selected in Finder. Apple documents this shortcut for moving files to the Bin, making it an inferred alternative for starting Citrix’s removal process. The same authentication and removal prompts still apply.

Use the Citrix disk-image uninstaller

The official Citrix disk image includes its own uninstaller. This remains a supported way to remove Workspace.

If you don’t have the disk image, visit Citrix’s Workspace app for Mac download page and select Download File.

Open CitrixWorkspaceApp.dmg on your Mac.

Select Uninstall Citrix Workspace App inside the disk image to start removal.

Complete the uninstaller’s prompts.

If removal stops because Workspace is still running, quit it using the options below and retry. If the disk-image uninstaller still fails, try the Terminal method.

Quit Workspace when removal gets stuck

A Citrix Workspace app left running holds up removal when the uninstaller asks you to close it.

With Workspace active, press Command-Q to quit. Quitting alone does not uninstall it.

Alternatively, right-click the Workspace icon in the Dock and select Quit.

To quit through the Quick Access interface, open Quick Access.

Select the Account icon.

Select Quit.

Once the remaining Workspace apps are closed, click Continue in the removal prompt. Citrix improved quitting in version 2402.10 so Workspace no longer continues running in the background after you quit.

Run the installed uninstaller in Terminal

This method requires Citrix’s installed uninstaller to still be present on your Mac.

The Citrix Receiver directory in the command is intentional. Citrix’s current documentation still uses that location for the Workspace uninstaller, so the older product name does not make the command outdated.

  1. 1.Choose Citrix Workspace™ > Quit Citrix Workspace with Workspace active.
  2. 2.Open Terminal.
  3. 3.Paste this command exactly and press Return: sudo /Library/Application\ Support/Citrix\ Receiver/Uninstall\ Citrix\ Workspace.app/Contents/MacOS/Uninstall\ Citrix\ Workspace --nogui

Clean up files left after uninstalling

After running the uninstaller, inspect /Applications/Citrix Workspace.app in Finder.

Check /Library/Application Support/Citrix Receiver for remaining files too. The Citrix Receiver folder name is correct even for current Workspace installations.

Move files remaining in those two locations to the Trash. Citrix permits this cleanup after uninstallation; it supplements the uninstaller rather than replacing it.

Keep cleanup limited to those locations. Don’t delete every Citrix-named file elsewhere on your Mac.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dragging Citrix Workspace to the Trash leave system files behind?

Citrix introduced complete removal through dragging in version 2206.1. Earlier versions did not provide the same complete removal, so advice that dragging always leaves system files behind is outdated. Finish Citrix’s authentication and removal prompts.

Does uninstalling Workspace also remove Citrix Enterprise Browser?

Workspace removal does not guarantee removal of independently installed companion products. Citrix Enterprise Browser stopped being bundled with Workspace starting in version 2511.1.

Can an administrator uninstall Workspace from a managed Mac?

Yes. Citrix supports deploying the installed uninstaller command through an organization’s MDM system. The deployment controls depend on the MDM product.

Does removing my Citrix account or shortcut uninstall Workspace?

No. Removing an account, deleting a shortcut, and disabling startup leave Workspace installed. Use one of the uninstall methods above for removal.
