A website needs to open another window, but Safari blocks it before you can continue. On a Mac, you can allow pop-ups for just that website; on iPhone and iPad, you use a global switch. Start with your device's setting below, then check extensions if the window still won't open.

Allow pop-ups for a website on Mac

This lets one website open pop-ups without changing permission for other sites. Open the website in Safari, then choose Safari > Settings. Select Websites.

Click Pop-up Windows in the sidebar, scrolling down if necessary. Choose Allow in the menu beside the website. Then retry the website action that opens the window.

Turn off the pop-up blocker on iPhone or iPad

Both devices use the same global switch, so this change allows pop-ups across websites.

  1. 1.Open Settings.
  2. 2.Tap Apps, then Safari.
  3. 3.Turn off Block Pop-ups.
  4. 4.Return to Safari and retry the action that opens the window.

Choose how broadly to allow pop-ups on Mac

To open a blocked window without permanently allowing the website, go to Safari > Settings > Websites > Pop-up Windows and set the site's menu to Block and Notify. Trigger the pop-up again, then click Show in the Smart Search field.

To allow pop-ups by default, set When visiting other websites to Allow in that same pane. Existing website exceptions override this default, so changing it alone does not allow every site.

For permission across all websites, also change each blocking exception under Configured Websites to Allow. Alternatively, select those entries and click Remove so they follow the default.

Check content blockers on your Mac

This addresses required content suppressed by an installed blocker after you have allowed pop-ups. Click the Page menu button in Safari's Smart Search field. Choose Website Settings. Deselect Enable content blockers.

Retry the website. If a blocking extension still interferes, open Safari > Settings > Extensions. Then deselect that extension's checkbox.

For a nondefault Safari profile, open Safari > Settings > Profiles. Select the profile you use for the website. Open its Extensions tab. Turn off the blocking extension for that profile.

Try disabling a blocking extension on mobile

An installed blocking extension can suppress required content even with Safari's pop-up blocker turned off. On iPhone, open the affected website's Page Menu in Safari. Tap Manage Extensions. Turn off the relevant extension for that website.

On iPad, tap the Manage Extensions button on the right side of Safari's search field. Choose Manage Extensions. Turn off the blocking extension for the website.

Retry the action that opens the window with Block Pop-ups still off. Extension controls and Safari's pop-up permission are separate settings.

Restore a dialog you previously hid

This restores an in-page element hidden with Distraction Control. Open the affected webpage. Click or tap Page Menu.

Select Show Hidden Items. Confirm the change if prompted.

Ask your administrator to lift a device restriction

On a managed iPhone or iPad, an administrator-enforced restriction can disable pop-ups. If device management prevents you from changing Safari's setting, ask your work or school administrator to remove the pop-up restriction.

After the restriction is lifted, open Settings > Apps > Safari. Turn off Block Pop-ups if it is still on.
