Your iPhone alarm is too quiet, and pressing the volume button isn't fixing it. Ordinary Clock alarms and Sleep Schedule wake-up alarms use different controls, with another difference between iOS 26 and iOS 27. Start with your alarm type below to turn up the right setting.
Turn up ordinary alarms in Settings
Open Settings.
Tap Sounds & Haptics.
On iOS 27, turn off Match Ringtone Volume under Alarms and Timers.
Drag the volume slider under Alarms and Timers to the right. This sets the volume independently for ordinary Clock alarms and timers. Sleep Schedule wake-up alarms have their own control.
On iOS 26, drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider to the right instead. A preview sounds as you adjust it. This shared setting also changes ringtone and alert volume.
Tip: If you want iOS 27 alarms to follow your ringtone volume, keep Match Ringtone Volume on, the default setting, and raise the ringtone volume.
Raise your Sleep Schedule wake-up volume
If you already have a sleep schedule configured in Health, use these Clock controls on iOS 26 or iOS 27.
- 1.Open Clock and tap Alarms.
- 2.Tap Change for your wake-up alarm.
- 3.Scroll to Alarm Options and turn on Alarm if it is off.
- 4.Move the Alarm volume slider to the right.
- 5.Tap Done, then choose Change Next Alarm Only for one morning or Change This Schedule for the recurring schedule.
Make the volume buttons adjust the right sound
During media playback, pressing Volume Up raises media volume instead of your alarm and alert volume.
Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
Turn on Change with Buttons.
On iOS 27, Change with Buttons is all you need: with it on, the volume buttons change the alarm volume. Turn on Match Ringtone Volume under Alarms and Timers only if you also want ordinary alarms to follow your ringtone volume, since that replaces the separate alarm volume you set earlier.
Stop media playback.
Press the physical Volume Up button to raise the alarm volume. This works for ordinary alarms on iOS 26 and iOS 27. Sleep Schedule alarms still need their separate Alarm volume slider.
Once you've set the volume, return to Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
Turn off Change with Buttons to prevent accidental button presses from lowering the configured alert volume. This locks out button changes; it does not increase the volume itself.
Give a silent alarm an audible sound
Turning up the volume won't help an ordinary alarm whose Sound is set to None. In StandBy, alarm haptics are disabled too, so choosing an audible sound matters.
Open Clock > Alarms.
Tap Edit.
Select the alarm you want to change.
Tap Sound.
Choose an audible sound instead of None.
Return to the alarm editor.
Tap Save. Choosing a sound restores audibility without raising the volume setting.
If the alarm still sounds weak with an audible tone and the appropriate volume setting, try the speaker checks below.
Try a different wake-up tone
Try another Sleep Schedule ringtone, but don't chase a single loudest option: Apple does not identify one.
- 1.Open Clock > Alarms and tap Change for your wake-up alarm.
- 2.Under Alarm Options, tap Sounds & Haptics.
- 3.Choose another ringtone.
- 4.Return to the alarm options and raise Alarm volume if needed.
- 5.Tap Done, then select Change Next Alarm Only for the next wake-up or Change This Schedule for the recurring schedule.
Clear anything blocking the speaker
If sound stays weak or distorted despite the correct alarm settings, check the speaker for obstructions.
Remove any case, film, or screen protector that blocks the speaker.
Inspect the speaker opening.
If it needs cleaning, use a clean, dry, small, soft-bristled brush.
Test the sound again.
If speaker problems persist after these checks, seek service for your iPhone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Silent mode or Do Not Disturb mute iPhone alarms?
No. Silent mode, the Ring/Silent switch, and Do Not Disturb do not silence Clock alarms. Changing them does not increase alarm volume.
Will my alarm still play through the iPhone speaker with headphones connected?
Yes. The alarm also sounds through the iPhone speaker when headphones are connected.
How do I increase alarm volume with VoiceOver?
With VoiceOver enabled, open the relevant volume control: Settings > Sounds & Haptics for ordinary alarms, or Clock > Alarms > Change > Alarm Options for a Sleep Schedule alarm. Tap the volume slider to select it, then swipe up with one finger to increase it. Alternatively, double-tap and hold until you hear three rising tones, then drag right.
