Microsoft Edge dark mode gets confusing because one setting changes the browser, while other settings change Windows, macOS, phones, reading pages, or websites. Start with the Edge Appearance switch for the browser itself, then use the system, reader, extension, or accessibility option for the specific screen you want dark.

1. Switch Edge On Desktop To Dark Mode

This is the main fix for the Edge window, menus, settings pages, and browser interface.

  1. 1.Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. 2.Select Settings and more (...).
  3. 3.Select Settings.
  4. 4.Select Appearance.
  5. 5.Under Overall appearance, choose Dark.

Shortcut: enter edge://settings/appearance in the address bar, then choose Dark under Overall appearance.

2. Make Edge Follow Windows Dark Mode

  1. 1.Open Start, then go to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Open Choose your mode and select Dark.
  2. 2.In Edge, select Settings and more (...) > Settings > Appearance. Set Overall appearance to System default.

Use this when you want Windows 10 or Windows 11 and Edge to keep the same appearance.

3. Match Edge With macOS Dark Appearance

On a Mac, switch the system appearance first.

  1. 1.Open the Apple menu.
  2. 2.Select System Settings.
  3. 3.Select Appearance.
  4. 4.Choose Dark.

Then open Edge and select Settings and more (...) > Settings > Appearance. Set Overall appearance to System default.

4. Change Microsoft Edge Mobile To Dark Mode

  • Open Edge mobile, select menu (...), go to Settings > Appearance, then choose Dark.
  • On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Display & Brightness, then select Dark.
  • On Android, open Settings > Accessibility > Color and motion > Dark theme, or use the Dark theme Quick Settings tile.

Use the app path for Edge only. Use the system controls when you want the whole phone or tablet to use dark appearance, not just Edge.

5. Darken Reading Pages With Reading Mode

Reading mode changes the reading view background on supported pages. It does not change the full Edge interface.

  1. 1.Open a supported web page in Microsoft Edge.
  2. 2.Select Reading mode in the address bar, or press F9.
  3. 3.In the Reading mode toolbar, select the Settings icon.
  4. 4.Select Appearance settings.
  5. 5.Under Theme, choose a dark page theme.

6. Make Websites Dark With An Extension

  1. 1.Select Extensions.
  2. 2.Choose Get Extensions for Microsoft Edge.
  3. 3.Search for a dark-mode extension such as Dark Reader.
  4. 4.Select Get, then select Add extension.
  5. 5.After it installs, use the extension toolbar button or settings to turn dark mode on or off for websites.

Use an extension when websites stay light after the Edge interface is dark. Extensions affect web pages more than the Edge browser frame, so use Overall appearance for the browser frame itself.

7. Use Windows Contrast Tools For Stronger Visibility

Windows contrast themes are accessibility settings for Edge and other apps, not Edge's normal dark theme.

For a dark contrast theme, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes, choose a dark contrast theme, then select Apply. Press Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen to toggle the selected contrast theme on or off.

For inverted colors, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Color filters, turn Color filters On, then choose Inverted. In Magnifier, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier > Appearance and turn on Invert colors; while Magnifier is active, Ctrl + Alt + I toggles inversion.

Use inversion only when that tradeoff is acceptable because it distorts images and colors.

8. Update Edge And Skip Old Fixes

  1. 1.Select Settings and more (...).
  2. 2.Select Help and feedback.
  3. 3.Select About Microsoft Edge.
  4. 4.Install the update shown on the page.
  5. 5.Restart Edge when prompted.

If Overall appearance is missing or your menus look different, update Edge first.

For a fresh install, use Microsoft's official Download Microsoft Edge page, choose your platform, then return to Settings > Appearance > Overall appearance > Dark.

Skip old tutorials that point to Microsoft Edge Legacy's old theme selector. Also skip Edge flags for everyday dark mode; flags are experimental, while Edge's Appearance setting and extensions are the current routes for the browser and websites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Microsoft Edge dark mode work on Linux?

Yes. Current Microsoft Edge desktop uses Settings and more > Settings > Appearance > Overall appearance > Dark on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Does IT policy force Edge desktop dark mode?

Microsoft's documented desktop policy surfaces manage Edge policies, but they do not provide a direct Overall appearance > Dark force switch. Admins verify applied policies at edge://policy.

Is Web Remix the same as Microsoft Edge dark mode?

No. Microsoft documents Web Remix dark-mode controls as a limited Edge Beta experiment for supported websites. It changes the local view of a page or site, not the normal Edge browser interface.

Does removing an extension turn on Edge dark mode?

No. Removing an extension does not turn on Edge dark mode. Use Overall appearance > Dark for Edge, and use extension controls only for website darkening.
