Subtitles are still covering your Samsung TV picture, even after you switched captions off. The setting you need depends on whether the text comes from the TV, a streaming app, or a connected device. Start with Samsung’s caption switch, then check the controls for whatever you’re watching if the words remain.

Turn off captions in Samsung’s settings

Set Caption to off at Home > Menu > Settings > All Settings > General & Privacy > Accessibility > Caption Settings. If your Home screen has a direct Settings entry, skip Menu.

For TVs with the General menu, switch Caption off at Home > Settings > General > Accessibility > Caption Settings. This layout is still supported.

Regional models use different labels. On the UK 2025 S95F, set Subtitle to Off at Home > left directional button > Settings > All Settings > General & Privacy > Accessibility > Subtitle Settings.

These switches control supported broadcasts and compatible apps, but they do not override every streaming app or HDMI device. Separate Closed Caption changes placement, while Digital Caption Options changes appearance. Neither is the main off switch.

Open the shortcuts with your remote

Use the option that matches your compatible Samsung remote, then finish with the last step.

  1. 1.On a Smart Remote, press inward and hold the Volume rocker for at least two seconds to open Accessibility Shortcuts.
  2. 2.On a remote with Mute, press and hold it to open Accessibility Shortcuts.
  3. 3.On a standard remote with Caption or AD/SUBT., press that button to open Accessibility Shortcuts.
  4. 4.Turn off the Caption or Subtitle control in that menu. The UK S95F uses Subtitle.

Disable subtitles inside the streaming app

App controls handle subtitles that Samsung’s caption switch leaves on.

For Netflix, start a movie or episode.

Press Up or Down to reveal playback controls.

Open Audio & Subtitles, unless your layout already shows language choices at the bottom.

Disable subtitles in those choices. Choose the off or no-subtitles option when it’s offered; some Netflix titles show forced subtitles that can’t be turned off.

For Prime Video, press Enter or the equivalent remote button during playback to reveal its controls.

Select the Closed Caption or Subtitles icon.

Turn subtitles off in that menu.

In HBO Max, pause the title you’re watching.

Open Audio and Subtitles > Subtitles.

Select Off.

Press Back to save.

For the Apple TV app, reveal the video timeline using your remote’s playback controls.

Open Subtitles.

Disable subtitles in that control.

To stop automatic subtitles, open the Apple TV app’s Settings > General. This is the app’s menu, separate from Samsung’s settings.

Turn off Automatic Subtitles.

For Sling TV, press Down while streaming.

Scroll right to SETTINGS.

Highlight CC.

Press Select/OK to switch captions off.

Check the connected player or cable box

When a Roku, Fire TV, or cable box supplies the picture, use that device’s remote and caption controls.

On a connected Roku, set Captions mode to Off at Home > Settings > Accessibility. If there’s no Accessibility entry, use Captions instead.

For a connected Fire TV, start playback.

Press Menu on the Fire TV remote or Fire TV App.

Choose Subtitles > Off.

Press Menu again to return to playback.

With an Xfinity X1 Voice Remote, hold the microphone button while saying “closed captions off.” This is an Xfinity X1 command.

On a connected Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio to change the automatic subtitle triggers.

Under Automatic Subtitles, turn off Show for Different Languages to disable that trigger.

Turn off Show When Muted if subtitles return when you mute.

Turn off Show on Skip Back if subtitles return when you skip backward.

If the device setting leaves captions on, try the streaming app’s own subtitle controls. Apps running on an external player have independent settings.

Use your phone when the Samsung remote is missing

With your compatible TV registered in SmartThings on Android or iOS, open Devices in the app.

Select your TV’s card.

Tap the mobile Remote control icon.

Expand the remote.

Use Home and the directional controls to reach the Samsung caption setting for your TV’s menu layout.

Switch Caption or Subtitle off.

Tip: SmartThings acts as your remote here, with features that vary by TV, app version, and region; use it to drive your TV’s own caption setting rather than hunting for a caption control in the app.

Stop returning captions and check text that stays on

Use these controls when Netflix subtitles return after Kids titles, an app keeps a subtitle track selected, or captions remain in Samsung TV Plus.

For Netflix, play a title rated Teens or above.

Disable subtitles for that title using Audio & Subtitles or the language choices shown during playback. Netflix saves this preference for future viewing.

In Apple TV app interfaces with the accessible-caption preference, open Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning.

Turn off Closed Captions + SDH.

Disable subtitles in Apple TV playback too if a subtitle track remains selected.

For a personal Plex Media Server title, set its subtitle track to None from the preplay screen or playback controls. This manual selection overrides the automatic account preference for that item.

In Samsung TV Plus’s 2025 TV interface, press Down while watching a channel to open Channel List.

Open the left-side menu.

Select Settings and Account to reach caption adjustments.

If the words are part of the video picture itself, no caption setting removes them. Those are burned-in or open captions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Roku turn captions off without leaving playback?

Yes, in apps that support Roku’s playback caption control. Press Star (*), then choose Closed captioning > Off. Roku retains this selection for future programs.

How do I stop Plex from automatically selecting subtitles?

For personal Plex Media Server libraries, sign into the Plex Web App and open user menu > Account Settings > Audio & Subtitle Settings. Enable Automatically Select Audio and Subtitle Tracks, then set Auto-Select Subtitle Mode to Manually Selected. Previously selected subtitle tracks need to be cleared separately.

Where do I turn off YouTube captions when a computer supplies the TV picture?

In the computer’s YouTube browser player, click the active Closed captions (CC) button again. This applies to browser playback sent to the TV through a connected computer or screen mirroring.

Does Samsung’s Subtitle switch also control videos played from USB?

Do not rely on the broadcast subtitle switch for USB or network media. The UK 2025 S95F has separate media-player subtitle controls: press Select during playback, then open the player’s settings to reach Subtitles. Samsung documents Subtitle Settings as covering programmes that provide broadcast subtitles, so set the media player’s own Subtitles control for these files.
