To turn off an FPS counter on Windows 11, press Alt + R for NVIDIA App, press Ctrl + Shift + O for AMD Software, or disable the counter in the app or monitor displaying it. Use the matching controls below for Steam, Game Bar, games, browsers, and other utilities. These steps use Windows 11 menus.

The short version

  • Graphics software: NVIDIA, AMD, and supported Intel software have shortcuts for hiding their performance overlays.
  • Steam: Open Settings > In Game and set Show performance monitor to Off.
  • Game and monitor controls: Turn off a game’s own counter in its settings, or use your monitor’s controls for its hardware display.
  • Automatic startup: Disabling a utility’s startup entry prevents it from opening at sign-in but does not stop its currently running overlay.

Hide the counter in your graphics software

For NVIDIA App on a PC with a supported GeForce GPU, press Alt + R while the counter is visible. If that shortcut was customized, press Alt + Z, select the Settings cog, then open Shortcuts to check its assignment. Press the assigned combination to hide the statistics overlay.

For AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition with Performance Metrics support, press Ctrl + Shift + O. To use the application controls instead, search for Metrics in AMD Software and open Performance Metrics. Select Overlay and turn off Show Metrics Overlay; the Settings tab also contains that switch.

After hiding AMD’s overlay, you can unbind its shortcut to prevent accidental reactivation. Unbinding removes the shortcut assignment but does not hide an overlay that is already visible. Search for Hotkey, select Hotkey Settings, and select the Toggle Performance Overlay shortcut tile. Press Delete to unbind it.

In Intel Graphics Software builds containing the Performance Metrics Overlay introduced with driver 32.0.101.8801, press Alt + Shift + O while the overlay is visible. On supported Intel Arc and Core Ultra graphics configurations, the corresponding application control is under Performance > Metrics > Metrics Overlay. These controls apply to Intel Graphics Software; Intel identifies the older Arc Control application as end of life.

Turn off Steam’s performance monitor

Open Steam > Settings > In Game. Under OVERLAY PERFORMANCE MONITOR, set Show performance monitor to Off. This turns off the current Windows Steam client’s performance monitor.

For keyboard control, inspect Toggle performance monitor key(s) on the same page. If a combination is assigned, press it while the monitor is visible. Use the assignment shown in your settings rather than assuming a particular shortcut.

To disable the complete Steam overlay for one game, find the game in your Library, open its Properties..., and select the General tab. Uncheck Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. This also removes the other Steam overlay functions for that game.

Remove FPS from Game Bar

Press Windows + G to open Game Bar. If the Performance widget, which shows FPS, stays on screen after you dismiss Game Bar, it is pinned. Select the Pin icon in the upper-right corner of the widget again to unpin it, so it no longer displays over your game when Game Bar is dismissed.

Disable MSI Afterburner or GPU Tweak displays

In MSI Afterburner, open Settings > Monitoring and select the framerate monitoring entry. Uncheck Show in On-Screen Display, then select Apply. Repeat this for other displayed metrics if you want to remove those too.

For an overlay supplied by MSI Afterburner through RivaTuner Statistics Server, you can also exit either application completely. MSI says both must run in the background for its monitoring data to appear in games. Exiting RivaTuner Statistics Server also affects other applications using it.

In ASUS GPU Tweak III, open the application and turn off OSD on its home screen. This disables its on-screen display globally.

Check other launchers and recording apps

For Overwolf, open the Overwolf Appstore, select Library, and open the game’s Game Settings. Turn off FPS Indicator for that game. To prevent Overwolf’s overlay and apps from launching for the selected game, disable Overlay & Hotkeys instead.

In Ubisoft Connect PC, select your profile at the upper left and open Settings > Interface. Uncheck Enable in-game overlay for supported games. This disables the complete Ubisoft overlay; close and reopen a game that was already running.

For Bandicam in Game Recording mode, open FPS and uncheck Show FPS Overlay. Alternatively, inspect Show/Hide Hotkey and press its assigned shortcut to hide the live FPS overlay.

During a GeForce NOW stream in the Windows app or a supported browser, press Ctrl + N repeatedly until the statistics display reaches Off. The shortcut cycles through Standard, Compact, and Off. In the native Windows app, you can also press Ctrl + G and turn off Statistics.

NVIDIA retired the older GeForce NOW statistics panel accessed with Ctrl + Alt + F6. Use Ctrl + N for the current statistics display.

Switch off the game’s own FPS display

In Apex Legends, open Settings > Gameplay and set Performance Display to Off. For Fortnite on PC, start at the main menu, press Esc, select the gear icon, and open Video. Under Advanced Graphics, disable Show FPS.

In Battlefield titles that provide the relevant networking controls, open Options > Networking. Set the unwanted performance data points to Off.

For EA Frostbite games that support the FPS console command, press ~ to open the game’s command console; the console key can vary with keyboard locale. Enter the following command and press Enter:

PerfOverlay.DrawFps 0

Remove a browser’s frame rate overlay

In Microsoft Edge DevTools, open Customize and control DevTools > Toggle Quick View panel. Select More tools > Rendering, then uncheck Frame Rendering Stats. This removes the overlay from the inspected webpage.

For Google Chrome’s DevTools overlay, open the Rendering tab. Uncheck Frame rendering stats to remove its webpage overlay.

Turn off a monitor’s built in counter

On Dell Gaming and Alienware monitors with these controls, use the monitor’s physical controls to open its on-screen menu. Select Game > Game Enhance Mode, then select Frame Rate or Refresh Rate and choose Off. The label depends on the monitor model.

For the ASUS XG32UQ and models with the same GamePlus layout, press the monitor’s GamePlus button. Use its navigation control to select FPS Counter, then choose OFF. Check your model’s manual for the button positions.

With ASUS DisplayWidget Center on a supported monitor, you can make the change from Windows instead. Open DisplayWidget Center, select the monitor, and choose GamePlus > FPS Counter > OFF. Compatibility depends on the monitor model.

On supported MSI Optix monitors, use the rear Navi Key to open Gaming > Refresh Rate > OFF. This display reports refresh rate and can be mistaken for game FPS. MSI lists these controls for MAG271CR, MAG271C, MPG27CQ, MAG241C, MPG27C, MAG271CQR, MAG321CQR, and MAG241CR.

Stop an overlay utility from opening at sign in

Once you have identified the overlay utility, you can stop it from opening on startup. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and set that application to Off. This applies to applications registered in the startup list and prevents future automatic startup.

Alternatively, right-click Start, select Task Manager, and open Startup apps. Select the overlay utility and choose Disable. Either method leaves the currently running instance active, so exit the application separately to stop its existing overlay.

Frequently Asked Questions
