Messenger says “Can’t deliver. User unavailable,” and your message won’t go through. The error alone doesn’t identify the cause: blocking, an unavailable account, and sending restrictions all prevent delivery. Start with the conversation and account checks, then tackle connection or app problems if those checks point to your device.
Find out whether the problem affects one conversation
Try sending a message to another contact. If that works, focus on the original conversation, including blocks and the recipient’s account availability. This comparison narrows your troubleshooting; it does not prove someone blocked you.
A visible Facebook profile does not rule out an existing messages-and-calls-only block. An inaccessible profile, a missing activity indicator, or this error alone does not establish blocking either.
For a group chat, check the conversation’s membership information to see whether the other participants have left.
If the original conversation still fails, check your blocked and restricted accounts next. If messages fail across conversations, review your account’s sending restrictions too.
Remove a block or restriction you applied
In Messenger on Android or iPhone, open Menu.
Go to Settings > Privacy & safety > Blocked Accounts.
Select the person you want to message.
Tap Unblock. Unblocking a Facebook profile here also unblocks it on Facebook, but does not restore your friendship automatically. Meta requires a waiting period before you can block that profile again.
If you restricted the person instead, open Menu > Settings > Privacy & safety > Restricted accounts. Restricting someone prevents you from calling or messaging them.
Select the person’s conversation.
Tap Unrestrict at the bottom.
To remove a Facebook profile block on a computer, open Facebook’s profile picture > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Blocking.
Under Block profiles and Pages, select Edit.
Open See your blocked list.
Select Unblock beside the profile.
Click Confirm.
Remember that only the recipient can remove a block they placed on you.
Review restrictions on your account
This addresses account sending restrictions that an app reset cannot remove.
On Facebook’s desktop website, open your profile picture menu.
Select Help & support > Account Status.
Review the restrictions listed for your profile. This page also shows restrictions affecting Pages and groups you manage.
Stop rapid or repeated sending if Messenger warns that you are sending too many messages. Meta identifies high message volume and Community Standards violations as causes of temporary messaging restrictions.
Read the restriction notice for the conditions that apply to your account.
Wait for a temporary restriction to end. There is no universal duration or device setting that removes it.
If Facebook says your account is suspended or disabled, sign into Facebook.
Follow the appeal prompt if the decision allows an appeal. Meta normally allows 180 days, with regional variations. You cannot submit an appeal for a suspended recipient through Messenger.
Check the recipient’s account availability
A deactivated Messenger account needs its owner to sign into Messenger with their username and password. You cannot reactivate someone else’s account. Facebook deactivation alone does not necessarily disable Messenger, so a missing Facebook profile is not enough to explain the failure.
If the recipient deactivated only Facebook and retained Messenger access, they can sign into the Messenger mobile app with their previous Facebook email address and password. Using Messenger does not reactivate Facebook, and friends can still send messages.
For an account pending deletion, the owner must sign into Facebook during the cancellation period and select Cancel deletion. Meta normally specifies 30 days, but the period varies by region. Completed deletion cannot be reversed and removes Messenger access.
For message-request eligibility, the recipient’s controls are under Menu > Settings > Privacy & safety > Message delivery, within the relevant group of people. Available choices depend on the contact category and account, with delivery to chats or requests offered as alternatives to Don’t receive requests. These controls determine request eligibility; they do not diagnose this exact error or override a block.
Test the connection and Messenger app
Open another website on your device to check whether internet access works.
Retry Messenger on a reliable connection. Network troubleshooting cannot change the recipient’s account availability.
To compare the mobile app with browser messaging, sign into the same Facebook account on a computer. This comparison helps isolate an app problem; blocks and account restrictions still apply.
From your Feed, select Messenger in the left menu.
Choose New message.
Enter the affected recipient in To.
Select their name.
Type your message.
Click Send. If the same conversation works on the web, continue with the app checks below.
On Android, open Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Updates available.
Install Messenger’s available update.
On iPhone or iPad, open App Store > profile icon > App Updates.
Install Messenger’s available update.
If Messenger is unresponsive on an iPhone without a Home button, open the app switcher by swiping up from the bottom and pausing. On a Home-button model, double-click the Home button instead.
Swipe Messenger’s preview upward to close it.
Reopen Messenger.
On a Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Messenger > Force stop.
Tap OK.
Launch Messenger again.
If the Pixel app still malfunctions, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Messenger > Storage & cache.
Tap Clear cache. This removes temporary files without changing the recipient’s account status. Other Android manufacturers use different menu paths.
Before reinstalling, check your encrypted-chat recovery method under Messenger’s Menu > Settings > Privacy & safety > End-to-end encrypted chats > Message storage.
Confirm that you retain access to that recovery method.
Confirm that you know your login credentials.
On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold Messenger.
Select Remove App.
Tap Delete App.
Confirm with Delete.
On Android, uninstall through Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > Messenger > Uninstall.
Reinstall Messenger from Meta’s official listing in your device’s app store.
Sign into your account.
Restore encrypted chat history when prompted.
Save reinstalling for persistent app problems, since it cannot remove a block or restore someone else’s account.
Report a delivery error that still persists
If the account checks and relevant app tests leave the problem unresolved, report the failure to Meta.
On Android, open Messenger’s Menu > Settings > Report technical problem > Report anyway.
Choose Include or Don’t include for diagnostic logs.
Describe the exact error, the affected conversation, and whether sending works with another contact or through Facebook on a computer.
Select Send.
On iPhone, open Menu > Settings > Report a problem > Report anyway.
Choose whether to include diagnostic logs.
Enter the same details in Briefly explain what happened.
Select Send.
If reporting through the app fails, try Facebook on a computer at profile picture > Help & support > Report a problem. Its reporting prompts let you describe the failure and include a screenshot of the error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I repeatedly block and unblock someone to reset delivery?
No. Blocking and unblocking is not a delivery reset. Meta says that after removing an existing messages-and-calls-only block, you cannot apply that kind of block again.
Should I reinstall the Windows or Mac Messenger app?
No. Meta’s standalone Messenger apps for Windows and Mac are no longer available. Use Facebook’s browser messaging or Messenger on a supported mobile device.
Will accepting a message request override this error?
Replying connects the recipient with the sender when the message has reached requests. It cannot override a block or an unavailable account. On Android, open Messenger > Menu > Message requests. Open the relevant request. Reply to connect with the sender.
Why can’t I message someone through Marketplace?
Marketplace messaging failures include removed Marketplace access, sending too many messages, and unsupported messaging between the countries involved. Follow any review instructions displayed with the restriction. There is no consumer toggle that overrides regional messaging limits.
