Junk email on iPhone piles up fast when the account behind Mail keeps accepting it. The fix is to block, report, unsubscribe, and filter from the place that actually controls the mailbox. Start with the fastest sender controls, then lock down the address so less junk gets through later.
Block obvious junk in Apple Mail
This stops repeat messages from the same sender in Apple Mail.
Open the Mail app on your iPhone.
Open a message from the sender you want to stop.
Tap the sender's email address at the top of the message.
Tap View Contact Card.
Tap Block this Contact.
Report spam in the app you use
Spam reporting works best inside the provider's own app, especially when your iPhone shows several accounts in one inbox.
- 1.In the Gmail app, open the message, tap More, then tap Report spam.
- 2.To report several Gmail messages, tap the sender profile picture next to each email, tap More, then tap Report spam.
- 3.In Outlook for iOS, select the email, tap ... at the top right, tap Report Junk, then choose Junk, Phishing, or Block Sender.
- 4.In the Yahoo Mail app, open an email or tap Edit and select multiple emails, then tap More and Mark as spam.
- 5.In the AOL Mail app, open an email or tap Edit and select multiple emails, then tap More and Mark as spam.
Unsubscribe from newsletters you recognize
Use unsubscribe for stores, newsletters, and promotional emails you signed up for. Skip unsubscribe on suspicious mail from unknown senders.
In the Gmail app, open the email, tap Unsubscribe next to the sender name, then tap Unsubscribe or Go to website in the pop-up.
For Gmail unsubscribe suggestions, open the Menu, tap Settings, go to Inbox customizations under Inbox, tap Inbox tips, and turn on Unsubscribe tips.
If this does not cut down the noise, block the sender or move to account-level filters so those messages go to Spam, Junk, Trash, or another folder.
Stop opening suspected iCloud junk
The most common mistake is opening suspected junk just to inspect it.
For iCloud Mail, delete suspicious junk without opening it. Apple says image loading in suspected junk mail can signal that your address is active.
Open the Mail app and select the suspected junk message without opening it.
Delete the message from the message list.
Turn on Mail Privacy Protection
Mail Privacy Protection reduces tracking signals tied to email activity. On iPhone, open Settings, go to Apps, then tap Mail.
Open Privacy Protection and turn on Protect Mail Activity. Keep using spam reporting and blocking too, because privacy protection is not a spam filter.
Clean up recurring iCloud promos
If you use iCloud Mail, Apple's cleanup tools handle promotional and update-style senders from iPhone settings. Apple documents these steps in the iOS 26 iPhone User Guide and notes that iCloud Mail Cleanup may not be available in all languages. You can also turn it on at icloud.com/mail.
- 1.Open Settings, tap [your name], then go to iCloud, Mail, and iCloud Mail Cleanup.
- 2.Turn on Use iCloud Mail Cleanup.
- 3.Tap Get Recommendations under Unsubscribe Recommendations.
- 4.Select each sender you want to stop.
- 5.Tap Unsubscribe.
Create rules when blocking is not enough
Rules fit junk that keeps arriving from similar senders, subjects, or patterns. For iCloud Mail, build those rules on iCloud.com.
Go to icloud.com/mail and sign in.
Tap the Settings button at the top of the Mailboxes list, then open Settings.
Open Rules, tap the Add button, enter a rule name, choose criteria below Message, choose what happens below Action, then tap Add.
iCloud Mail supports up to 500 rules. New or changed rules take up to 15 minutes to affect incoming mail.
Shield your real address going forward
For iCloud Mail, an alias lets you use another @icloud.com address instead of giving out your primary address. On iCloud.com Mail, open the Settings button, then Settings, Account settings, and Add Alias; enter the Alias Address, Label, and Full Name, then tap Create.
If you have iCloud+, use Hide My Email to create forwarding addresses for websites and apps. On iPhone, open Settings, tap [your name], go to iCloud, then Hide My Email, and tap Create New Address.
To stop mail from one Hide My Email address later, return to Hide My Email, tap the address below Create New Address, then tap Deactivate Email Address. In Apple Mail, use Hide My Email while composing by tapping the From field, tapping it again, then choosing Hide My Email; those messages support one recipient at a time.
Move deeper cleanup to account settings
The most common cause of junk that keeps returning is that the iPhone app is only showing the mailbox while the provider keeps accepting the mail.
For Gmail, create filters on a computer. Open Gmail, use Show search options in the search box, enter your criteria, click Create filter, choose an action such as delete, archive, or label, then click Create filter.
For Outlook.com, open Settings, then Mail and Junk email. Under Blocked senders and domains, choose Add blocked sender, enter the email address or domain, then select OK and Save.
If an account is too noisy to keep on your iPhone, open Settings, go to Apps, then Mail and Mail Accounts, select the account, and turn off Mail. For iCloud, turn off Use on this iPhone; to remove the account from the phone, choose Sign Out or Delete Account.
iPhone hardware-button shortcuts, Siri commands, and Apple Intelligence commands do not provide a current official junk-mail control. Gmail filter creation belongs on a computer, and Gmail phishing reporting also uses Gmail on a computer through More and Report phishing.
For work or school mail, contact your administrator when junk keeps getting through. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 include organization-level blocking controls, and those controls require admin permissions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does blocking a sender on iPhone stop all spam?
No. Blocking helps with repeat senders, but broad spam needs reporting, unsubscribe tools, provider filters, and safer address use.
Should I unsubscribe from every junk email?
No. Unsubscribe from senders you recognize. For suspicious iCloud junk, delete it without opening it so image loading does not signal an active account.
Can I create Gmail filters in the Gmail iPhone app?
No. Gmail filter creation uses Gmail on a computer through Show search options and Create filter.
Can Hide My Email stop junk on my real address?
It helps prevent new sites from getting your real address. You can deactivate a Hide My Email address later to stop forwarding from that address.
