One loud contact can make your iPhone feel impossible to ignore. The fix changes by route: Messages alerts, text sounds, calls during a Focus, Mail threads, or WhatsApp chats. Start with the narrowest mute, then move to Focus, silent tones, or blocking only when the quieter option does not cover the problem.

Silence their Messages conversation first

Open Messages.

Find the conversation with the person you want to mute, then swipe left on it.

Tap Hide Alerts.

Messages from that conversation still arrive, but that conversation’s notifications stay silent.

You can also open the conversation, tap the contact or icon at the top, then turn on Hide Alerts.

Use this when you want the texts to keep arriving without lighting up your day.

Mute message sounds for one saved contact

This method applies when you want that person’s message notifications to remain available while sound and haptic taps go quiet.

Open Messages, then open the one-person conversation.

Tap the contact icon at the top, tap Info, then tap Edit.

Choose Edit Contact Info.

Open Text Tone.

Tap None below Haptics.

Tap None below Alert Tones.

Use Focus when calls are the problem

The most common snag is expecting Hide Alerts in Messages to silence regular Phone calls too.

Open Settings.

Tap Focus.

Choose a Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work.

Open People or Choose People.

Choose Silence Notifications From.

Tap Add People, then select the contact.

Leave Allow Calls From Silenced People off to silence that person’s calls while the Focus is active.

One exception applies: regardless of your Focus settings, calls from your emergency contacts still come through.

If that person has Emergency Bypass turned on, open Contacts, tap their name, tap Edit, tap Ringtone or Text Tone, then turn Emergency Bypass off.

Turn on the Focus when you need quiet

After the contact is added to the Focus, activate it from Control Center or by asking Siri.

  1. 1.Open Control Center.
  2. 2.Tap Focus.
  3. 3.Tap the Focus you configured, such as Do Not Disturb.
  4. 4.To use Siri instead, ask Siri to turn Do Not Disturb on or off.

Set up a silent ringtone for that contact

Open GarageBand when you need to create a custom silent ringtone.

Create or import a silent audio file.

Export the silent audio as a ringtone.

Choose Use sound as.

Tap Assign to contact, then select the person.

If the silent tone already exists, open Contacts.

Tap the person’s name, then tap Edit.

Choose Ringtone or Text Tone, then select the silent custom tone.

The silence comes from the audio file itself, because iPhone does not provide a built-in silent ringtone choice for calls.

Block them when muting is not enough

The most common cause is confusing silencing with blocking.

Silencing keeps communication coming in quietly.

Blocking stops the contact through the Phone, Messages, FaceTime, and Mail paths Apple lists.

To block from Settings on iOS 26, open Settings.

Tap Privacy & Security.

Tap Blocked Contacts.

Tap Add Blocked Contact.

Enter the contact, then tap Block Contact.

A blocked caller can still leave voicemail without sending you a notification.

Mute Mail or WhatsApp separately

This applies when the person is bothering you through a specific app rather than through iPhone calls or texts. Each app has its own mute behavior.

In Mail, open a message in the conversation.

Tap the Reply button, then tap Mute.

To adjust what happens to muted threads, go to Settings, then Apps, then Mail, then Muted Thread Action.

In WhatsApp, open the individual chat.

Tap the person’s name, tap Notifications, then tap Mute notification.

Choose the length of time to mute notifications.

Use current iOS paths instead of old ones

Older iPhone instructions send you to Settings and then Do Not Disturb. On current iPhone versions, use Settings, then Focus, then Do Not Disturb.

Old blocking instructions point to separate blocked-contact lists inside Phone, FaceTime, Messages, or Mail. On iOS 26, use Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Blocked Contacts.

Old Messages filtering instructions use Filter Unknown Senders. On iOS 26, the current label is Screen Unknown Senders, available from Messages, then the Filters button, then Manage Filtering, or from Settings, then Apps, then Messages, then Unknown Senders.

Skip unknown sender filtering for saved contacts

The most common mistake is treating unknown-sender filtering like a normal saved-contact mute.

Screen Unknown Senders works only when the sender is unknown, such as someone not in Contacts or someone you have not previously interacted with in Messages.

To use it, open Messages.

Tap the Filters button.

Tap Manage Filtering.

Turn on Screen Unknown Senders.

You can also open Settings, tap Apps, tap Messages, tap Unknown Senders, then turn Screen Unknown Senders on or off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I silence one iPhone contact without blocking them?

Yes. Use Hide Alerts for that person’s Messages conversation, or add the contact to Silence Notifications From inside a Focus when you want calls and notifications quiet during that Focus.

Will Hide Alerts stop phone calls from that person?

No. Hide Alerts silences that Messages conversation only. Use Focus for calls, assign a silent custom ringtone, or block the contact if you want communication stopped rather than muted.

Can I silence one contact’s texts but still see them?

Yes. Set the contact’s Text Tone so both Haptics and Alert Tones are None. The messages still arrive, but that saved contact’s message sounds and haptics are silenced.

Is blocking the same as silencing a contact?

No. Silencing keeps messages or calls quiet under the method you choose. Blocking stops the contact through Apple’s listed Phone, Messages, FaceTime, and Mail paths, though voicemail can still be left without a notification.
