Chrome keeps your Google Account connected in different ways depending on the device you use. A normal browser sign-out is quick, but removing an account, stopping auto sign-in, or signing out remotely uses a different path. Start with the device in front of you, then use the stronger cleanup options when Chrome keeps pulling the account back in.
Sign out of Chrome on a computer
Open Chrome on your Windows PC, Mac, or Linux computer. At the top right, select Profile, then select Sign out of Chrome. Use this first when you only need to disconnect your Google Account from Chrome on that computer.
Know what signing out changes
Signing out of Chrome is different from signing out of a Google website. On a Google page, select your profile image or initial, then choose Sign out or Sign out of all accounts to leave Google web services open in Chrome.
After you sign out of a Google web service, Chrome shows Remove Account from Chrome in the Profile menu when that account is in the matching browser state, including a Google Account error state. For a browser-level sign-out on desktop, use Profile, then Sign out of Chrome. Website sign-out handles Google pages, not the full Chrome profile connection.
Use Remove Account from Chrome
This method applies when Chrome shows Remove Account from Chrome after you signed out of a Google web service or when the account is in an error state. Open Chrome. At the top right, select Profile, then select Remove Account from Chrome. Chrome removes that account from the browser state shown in the profile menu.
Stop Chrome from signing in again
The most common cause is Chrome being allowed to sign back in after you use Google services such as Gmail. On desktop, open Chrome. At the top right, select Profile, then choose Google Services Settings.
Under Other Google services, select Don’t sign in. Choose Ask every time instead when you want Chrome to ask before signing in again.
Sign out of Chrome on Android
Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet. On the right of the address bar, tap More, then tap Settings. Tap your name, then tap Sign out. To stop future prompts, open More, tap Settings, tap Google services, then turn off Allow Chrome sign-in.
Sign out of Chrome on iPhone or iPad
This fixes Chrome being signed in on an iPhone or iPad. Open Chrome, tap More, then tap Settings. Tap your name, then tap Sign Out. To stop sign-in prompts later, open More, tap Settings, tap Google Services, then turn off Allow Chrome Sign-in.
Remove the account from the whole device
Removing a Google Account from Android goes beyond Chrome because it affects other Google apps that use that device account. On Android 14 and up, open device Settings, then go to Passwords & accounts. Under Accounts, tap the account you want to remove.
Choose Remove account, confirm Remove account, then tap Delete. If that Android menu name is different, look for Users & accounts, Passwords, Passwords, passkeys & autofill, Password, passkeys & accounts, or Manage accounts.
Sign out remotely from another device
Use your Google Account device list when you need to sign the account out of a computer, phone, or tablet you do not have with you. Go to your Google Account, open Security & sign-in, then under Your devices, choose Manage all devices.
Select the device you want to sign out of, then choose Sign out. Another Google Account path uses Your devices, Manage devices, the device, then Sign out next to Account Access.
For a Chrome-only remote sign-out, manage apps with access to your Google Account, select Google Chrome under Google apps, then choose Remove access. Google says this signs you out from any computer you have used before, including the current one.
Handle Chromebooks and managed devices
The most common confusion is that a Chromebook signs you out of the ChromeOS session, not just a normal desktop Chrome profile. On a Chromebook, select the time at the bottom right, then click Sign out.
If Sign out is not shown, select Power, then Sign out. To use the keyboard, press Shift + Ctrl + q twice. For shared Chromebooks with multiple users signed in, select the time, open the Power menu, then choose Sign out all.
Work or school-managed Chrome uses admin controls for browser sign-in, primary account restrictions, and secondary Google Account sign-in or sign-out. When those controls are active, contact the organization that manages the browser or device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does signing out of Chrome delete my bookmarks or passwords?
No. Signing out is not the same as deleting a Chrome profile. Deleting a local Chrome profile removes that profile’s bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings from that computer.
How do I remove a Chrome profile from a computer?
Open Chrome, select Profile, choose Manage Chrome profiles under Other Chrome profiles, select the profile, open More, then choose Delete and confirm Delete.
Can I browse Chrome without signing in?
Yes. On desktop, use Guest mode by selecting Profile, then Open Guest profile. Guest mode gives you a signed-out browsing surface and is not available on Chromebooks or mobile devices.
Can I sign out of Chrome on a lost computer?
Yes. Use your Google Account to manage apps with access to your account, select Google Chrome under Google apps, then choose Remove access. You can also use the Google Account device list to sign the account out of a selected device.
