How to Set Up and Fix Personal Hotspot

You turn on Personal Hotspot, expect another device to jump online, and instead the hotspot is missing, dimmed, asking for the wrong password, or visible but impossible to join. The fix depends on the device sharing the connection and the device trying to connect. Start with the setup path for your device, then use the repair sections for carrier blocks, compatibility trouble, USB, Bluetooth, and managed work or school devices.

1. Check the hotspot requirements before changing settings

A hotspot needs a device that can share an internet connection and a plan that allows it.

On iPhone and cellular iPad, Personal Hotspot depends on carrier support, plan terms, fees, device limits, and model limits.
On Android, carriers can limit hotspot use or charge extra, and Google's Android help lists up to 10 devices for Wi-Fi hotspot.
Windows 11 can share Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular data.
A Chromebook can create its own hotspot only when it has cellular capability, supported Wi-Fi hardware, supported modem firmware, hotspot enabled, and a mobile data plan with tethering.

Do the fast check first. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Cellular and turn on Cellular Data. If Personal Hotspot still is not visible or cannot be turned on, confirm that the carrier has enabled it and that the wireless plan supports it. If the phone shows Set Up Personal Hotspot, open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Personal Hotspot and follow the onscreen instructions. If Cellular Data is on and Set Up Personal Hotspot is missing, contact the carrier about adding Personal Hotspot to the plan.

2. Turn on Personal Hotspot on iPhone or iPad

1.Open Settings > Personal Hotspot. If that path is not shown, use Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
2.Turn on Allow Others to Join.
3.To change the password, tap Wi-Fi Password, enter a password with at least eight ASCII characters, then save it.
4.Keep the Personal Hotspot screen open until the other device connects.
5.On the other device, open the Wi-Fi list, choose the iPhone or iPad hotspot, and enter the password shown on the hotspot screen.

Use Apple's Wi-Fi hotspot path when an iPhone or cellular iPad is the device sharing the connection. If you want the hotspot to show a different name, rename the iPhone. Open Settings > General > About > Name, clear the current name, and enter the new one. Apple uses that name for iCloud, AirDrop, Bluetooth, Personal Hotspot, and the computer.

3. Set up hotspot on Android and Samsung Galaxy

On most Android phones, Quick Settings is the fastest route: swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Hotspot. If the tile is missing, tap Edit at the bottom left, then drag Hotspot into Quick Settings.

For the full Android hotspot screen, swipe down from the top, touch and hold Hotspot, then turn on Wi-Fi hotspot. Tap the hotspot name or password to view or change it. Some phones first require Set up Wi-Fi hotspot.

On Samsung Galaxy phones and cellular tablets, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot, then turn on the switch at the top. To edit the network name or password, stay on Mobile Hotspot and use the Information section.

On a supported cellular Chromebook, click the time at the bottom right, open Settings, then go to Network > Hotspot. Next to Hotspot name, select Configure, enter the hotspot name and password, select Save, then turn Hotspot on. The same Chromebook hotspot area can show automatic shutoff, connected-device count, and Use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi to extend compatibility.

5. Connect your own devices without retyping passwords

Apple Instant Hotspot works when the iPhone or cellular iPad and the device joining it are nearby, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, and the devices use the same Apple Account or Family Sharing.

On Mac, open the Wi-Fi menu or Control Center and choose the nearby iPhone or iPad Personal Hotspot.
On iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro, open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the nearby Personal Hotspot.
On Apple TV, open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi and select it.

Auto-join controls live on the device that connects. On iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro, open Settings > Wi-Fi > Auto-Join Hotspot, then choose Ask to Join or Automatic. On Apple Watch, use Settings > Wi-Fi > Auto Hotspot Settings > Ask to Join or Automatic. On Mac, open the Wi-Fi menu or Control Center > Wi-Fi Settings > Ask to join hotspots, then choose Ask to Join or Automatic. Apple's docs state that Automatic on Mac requires macOS Tahoe 26 or later.

For Apple family access, use the iPhone or iPad providing the hotspot. Open Settings > Personal Hotspot > Family Sharing, turn on Family Sharing, tap a family member, then choose Automatic or Ask for Approval.

Samsung and Chromebook have their own convenience paths. On supported Galaxy devices, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot > Auto Hotspot, turn on Auto Hotspot, then choose which signed-in Samsung account or Samsung family group devices can use it. On Chromebook, enable an Android phone through Settings > Connected devices > your device > Instant tethering, then use the Wi-Fi menu and select the phone under Your device hotspots.

6. Fix a hotspot that will not turn on or appear

1.Restart the iPhone, iPad, phone, tablet, or computer sharing the hotspot, then restart the device trying to join it.
2.Install the latest iOS or iPadOS when the hotspot provider is an iPhone or iPad.
3.On iPhone or iPad, reset network settings from Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
4.On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot and turn on Use Wi-Fi hotspot. If it is already on, turn it off and back on. If the phone has not used hotspot before, tap Set up Wi-Fi hotspot first.
5.On Pixel, reset saved Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings from Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi > Reset settings.

Start on the device sharing the connection. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Cellular, turn on Cellular Data, then open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join. After each repair step, try connecting again. If Personal Hotspot still cannot be found or turned on after cellular data is on, verify carrier hotspot support and plan support.

7. Adjust compatibility when devices cannot connect

Use these settings when the hotspot appears in the Wi-Fi list but an older laptop, tablet, console, or accessory cannot join it.

1.On iPhone 12 or later, iPad Pro 11-inch 3rd generation or later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 5th generation or later, and iPad mini 6th generation, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Maximize Compatibility. Apple says this may reduce performance and security by using 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal.
2.On Samsung Galaxy, change the hotspot band from 6 GHz to 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz when an older device cannot connect.
3.On a Galaxy phone or tablet trying to connect, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and tethering > Mobile Hotspot, tap the network name, then choose Security > WPA2-Personal or WPA2/WPA3-Personal. Samsung says to contact the provider or manufacturer if the security setting cannot be changed.
4.On a supported Chromebook hotspot, open Settings > Network > Hotspot and turn on Use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi to extend compatibility.

On Mac, run Wireless Diagnostics after trying to join the hotspot. Hold Option, click the Wi-Fi status menu, select Open Wireless Diagnostics, and follow the onscreen instructions. After analysis, use the Info buttons in Summary for details.

8. Switch to USB or Bluetooth tethering

Use USB when one computer needs the connection. For iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot, turn on Allow Others to Join, then connect the iPhone or iPad by USB cable. If prompted on the computer, click Allow. If prompted on the iPhone or iPad, tap Trust. On Windows, install Apple Devices for Windows or iTunes for Windows first, then check updates in Microsoft Store.

On Mac using iPhone USB, open System Settings > Network > iPhone USB, select Make Inactive, then select Make Active. If iPhone USB is missing, add iPhone USB as a network service.

For Android USB tethering, connect the Android phone to the other device with a USB cable, swipe down from the top, touch and hold Hotspot, then turn on USB tethering. Google says Mac computers cannot tether with Android by USB.

Bluetooth is the other fallback. For Android, pair the phone with the other device, set up the other device's Bluetooth network connection, touch and hold Hotspot, then turn on Bluetooth tethering. For Samsung Galaxy, use Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Bluetooth tethering, then pair from the receiving device.

Windows 11 can join another device's Bluetooth hotspot through PAN. Pair both devices, activate Bluetooth sharing on the hotspot device, then open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Under Other devices, expand the hotspot device, select Personal Area Network (PAN) > Join, choose Access Point, then select Connect.

9. Rule out managed devices and outdated fixes

A work or school device can block hotspot controls through management policy.
Apple management settings can prevent users from changing Personal Hotspot settings on supervised iPhone and iPad.
Android Enterprise policy can block tethering and hotspot access.
Windows device restrictions can block internet sharing, and Windows management policy can set the Windows Mobile Hotspot Service startup mode.

When a managed device has the hotspot switch disabled, contact the organization that manages the device.

Skip older fixes that no longer match current support guidance. Windows 10 hotspot paths are legacy because Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows Mobile Plans setup is deprecated because Microsoft says support for the Mobile Plans app ended in February 2026 and the app was removed.
