Choose a photo on your iPhone

Open the Apple Watch app on your paired iPhone and tap Face Gallery > Photos. Choose a style, then tap Choose Photos. Select one picture for a single background, or select up to 24 photos for a rotating selection.

When you finish selecting pictures, tap Done. Adjust the layout, then tap Add to add the face.

Shuffle photos automatically or use an album

For automatic selections, open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, tap Face Gallery > Photos, and choose a style. Tap Shuffle, choose Featured or People, then tap Continue. Adjust the layout and tap Add. Apple selects 16 pictures daily for these options.

To use an album instead, open the Apple Watch app and tap Face Gallery > Photos. Choose a style, then tap Shuffle > Collection. Select your album and tap Continue, then adjust the layout and tap Add.

Create a photo face directly on Apple Watch

On watchOS 26 or watchOS 27, open Photos on Apple Watch, open an album, and open the picture you want. Tap the onscreen Action button, scroll down, then tap Create Watch Face > Photos. Use the button on the display while viewing your picture, not the hardware Action button on Apple Watch Ultra.

If the picture needs to be supplied to your watch, choose an album to sync on watchOS 27. On your paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then open Photos > Sync Album and select the album. Once the picture is available on the watch, open it in Photos and create the face using the steps above. Syncing supplies pictures but does not activate a photo face.

Add or switch to a saved photo face

To add a Photos face through the watch’s face browser on watchOS 27, touch and hold the current face. Swipe left to the end and tap Add. Scroll to All Watch Faces, find Photos, and tap Get, then Add. Configure the pictures using the photo selection methods above.

To activate an existing photo face on watchOS 27, touch and hold the current watch face, swipe to the photo face, and tap it. For direct switching with a swipe, open Settings > Clock on the watch and turn on Swipe to Switch Watch Face. You can then swipe between your saved faces to reach the photo background.

Show a photo face when a Focus turns on

Save your photo face before linking it to a Focus, because this workflow activates an existing face. For watchOS 27, open Settings > Focus on your paired iPhone and select a Focus. Under Customize Screens, tap Choose below the Apple Watch image, select the photo face, and tap Done.

To automate activation, return to Settings > Focus, select that Focus, and tap Add Schedule. For manual activation on the watch, press the side button, tap the Focus control, select the Focus, and choose its duration.

Add a photo face someone shares with you

You can add a shared Apple Watch face that includes images, provided that particular face is compatible with your watch. For the watchOS 27 workflow, open the message, email, or link containing the shared face on your iPhone. Tap the face, then tap Add.

If the shared design includes an unwanted third-party complication, tap Continue Without This App. For a face file received through AirDrop or Files, open it on iPhone in the Apple Watch app, then tap Add to My Faces.

Turn a photo into a Kaleidoscope pattern

For an abstract background on watchOS 27, choose Kaleidoscope from the face gallery and customize its Image and Style options. Your selected photo supplies the evolving pattern. Tap the resulting face and turn the Digital Crown to change the pattern.

If you want to select and display a particular picture as a regular photo background, use the Photos face steps above.

Control the photo setup through your iPhone

With watchOS 27, you can use Apple Watch Mirroring to perform the on-watch photo workflow through your paired iPhone. On iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > Apple Watch Mirroring, then turn on Apple Watch Mirroring. Apple Watch SE does not support this feature.

With your picture already available on the watch, use the mirrored display to open Photos, open an album, and open the picture. Tap the onscreen Action button, scroll down, then tap Create Watch Face > Photos.

Remove a photo face you no longer want

To remove a face from your collection on watchOS 27, touch and hold the current watch face and swipe to the unwanted one. Swipe up on that face, then tap Remove.

You can also remove it from your paired iPhone. Open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then under My Faces, tap Edit. Tap the Delete button beside the unwanted face, then tap Remove.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to download an app to set a photo background?

No additional software download or update is required for these built-in methods when your watch already runs the specified watchOS version. You can create the face through the Apple Watch app on your paired iPhone or through Photos on your watch.

Can you sync Memories and Featured Photos to your watch?

Yes, on watchOS 27, open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, tap My Watch, then open Photos. Turn on Sync Memories and Sync Featured Photos to supply those pictures to the watch. You still need to create a photo face afterward.

Why do older instructions mention Dynamic?

Apple’s watchOS 10 instructions included a Dynamic option for recent Memories. For watchOS 26 and watchOS 27, use the Shuffle options in the Photos face setup.

Can Voice Control help you create the face through Mirroring?

Yes, the watchOS 27 Mirroring workflow supports iPhone Voice Control and Switch Control as inputs. You can use them to operate the mirrored watch interface and perform the same photo creation steps.

What is the minimum watchOS version for receiving shared faces?

Apple specifies watchOS 7 or later for receiving shared watch faces. The particular shared face must also be compatible with your watch, so the version requirement alone does not guarantee that you can use it.
