Your Home Xbox controls where eligible digital games and Xbox Game Pass access are shared on an Xbox console. If a game asks for the owner to sign in, or a replacement console is not sharing content, the fix starts in the console settings. Use the account that owns the games or subscription, then set the console from My home Xbox.
Set your Xbox as your Home Xbox
Start on the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console you want to make the Home Xbox.
- 1.Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the games or subscription.
- 2.Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- 3.Select Profile & system, then Settings.
- 4.Open General, then Personalization, then My home Xbox.
- 5.Select Make this my home Xbox.
Know what Home Xbox changes
Home Xbox is tied to a Microsoft account, and each account has one Home Xbox at a time. The setting applies to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles on current Xbox system software.
When you choose Make this my home Xbox, that console becomes the place where eligible Xbox Game Pass access and owned digital content are shared with other users on that console.
The owner account matters. The account signed in during setup must be the account that owns the subscription or digital games.
Do not use a general Microsoft account devices page for this setting. The current path is Profile & system, Settings, General, Personalization, and My home Xbox.
Fix game license errors with Home Xbox
When a game or app shows a license problem, including error 0x82D40007, have the owner of the game or app sign in on the console first.
Open Profile & system, then Settings, then General, then Personalization, then My home Xbox. Check the box next to Make this my home Xbox, and on the next screen choose Make this my home Xbox.
If this method fails, check the console for a switch-limit message or sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, app, or subscription.
Handle the Home Xbox switch limit
The most common cause is that the account has already used five Home Xbox switches in a one-year period.
Try setting the console again from Profile & system, Settings, General, Personalization, and My home Xbox.
When you reach the limit for the year, the My home Xbox settings screen shows the next available date you can change it.
Wait for that date to switch again. Customer support cannot offer additional Home Xbox switches.
Use Remote Play away from the console
Remote Play still changes the same console setting; it gives you control of the Xbox from another device.
- 1.Open a supported browser and go to xbox.com/remoteplay.
- 2.Select your console, then choose Remote play on this device.
- 3.In the remote session, press the Xbox button or open the guide.
- 4.Go to Profile & system, Settings, General, Personalization, and My home Xbox.
- 5.Select Make this my home Xbox.
Change it with the Xbox mobile app
The most common point of confusion is thinking the Xbox app has its own Home Xbox switch.
The mobile app works as a remote control for a paired Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console. Open the Xbox app on iOS or Android, select the Console icon, select your console, and tap Open remote control.
Use the remote controls to navigate the console to Profile & system, Settings, General, Personalization, My home Xbox, and Make this my home Xbox.
The Xbox mobile app supports iOS 15.1 or higher and Android 8.0 or higher.
Restrict who changes Home Xbox
This method applies when a shared console allows guest access and you want to control whether guests can set that console as the Home Xbox.
Set up an access PIN first. The guest access restrictions sit behind it, and anyone with the PIN can change them.
Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Go to Profile & system, Settings, System, and Access restriction options.
On the Access restrictions screen, enable or disable Allow setting home Xbox, the option that controls whether anyone can set this console as the home Xbox. Access to content is a separate setting that only sets the age-appropriate content level for guests.
This controls access around Home Xbox changes. It is not the normal setup path for the account owner.
Remove a Home Xbox
Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
Select Profile & system.
Open Settings.
Go to General, then Personalization, then My home Xbox.
Select Make this my home Xbox.
Choose Remove this as my home Xbox.
After removing it, set the new console from the same My home Xbox screen while signed in with the owner account.
Skip outdated Home Xbox tricks
Use the current console settings path to avoid dead ends.
Skip Xbox Assist and My Xbox Assist as setup methods for current consoles.
Do not use Cortana voice commands, because Cortana is no longer available on Xbox consoles.
Do not rely on Kinect voice navigation to set Home Xbox; it is not a verified Home Xbox setup method, Kinect hardware has been discontinued, and the Kinect Adapter is not compatible with Xbox Series X|S.
Do not use the Microsoft account devices web portal to set or remove Home Xbox.
The working path is Profile & system, Settings, General, Personalization, and My home Xbox.
