A black Roku TV screen turns a simple restart into a guessing game. You can restart it without seeing a menu or using a remote, and supported models have physical controls for a factory reset. Start with the fixes that keep your settings, then move to a full reset if the picture stays black.

Check whether the display is simply turned off

Hear sound but see nothing? Press OK on your remote. This restores the picture when the TV's display has been deliberately disabled.

With a voice remote, hold the Microphone button and say “Turn on display.” With hands-free voice enabled on a Voice Remote Pro, say “Hey Roku, turn on display.”

If your Roku-branded OLED TV is performing a screen refresh, leave it connected to power until it finishes. The short refresh keeps the screen black for about five to six minutes. To stop the refresh and restore the picture, press Power on the TV or remote.

Restart the TV without using the screen

A power-cycle restart keeps your settings and sign-ins. Once you've ruled out an OLED screen refresh, unplug the TV from its power outlet.

Leave it unplugged for 60 seconds. On a TCL Roku TV with an accessible physical Power button, hold that button for approximately 10–15 seconds during the unplugged period. Release the button.

Reconnect the TV to power, using a wall outlet directly for the TCL procedure. Turn the TV on. If the screen stays black, press Home and isolate connected equipment using the next steps.

If an input is black, isolate the connected device

Use this when a cable box, game console, or another connected source shows no picture. A working Home screen helps separate an input problem from a TV-wide failure.

Press Home two or three times, pausing between presses. If the Home screen appears, select the input used by your connected device. Restart that external device.

Reseat its HDMI cable. If the input remains black, try another HDMI cable. Try another HDMI port if changing the cable doesn't restore the picture.

To isolate connected equipment when the screen remains black, turn off the TV. Unplug the TV from power. Disconnect the external equipment.

Reconnect only the TV's power. Start the TV. If the picture returns, reconnect your equipment individually to identify which connection brings the problem back.

Use a system restart when menus return

A system restart addresses software trouble when the picture returns intermittently or only an app or input is black.

Press Home. Open Settings > System > Power > System restart > Restart, or Settings > System > System restart > Restart if there is no Power menu.

Without a working remote, connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the responsive TV. Mobile control must already be enabled on the TV.

Open the Roku mobile app. Sign in. Select your TV.

Tap Remote. The app supplies remote buttons; it doesn't show you the TV's missing picture. Use the app's Home and navigation controls to follow the restart path above.

Fix an app that alone shows a black screen

A malfunctioning app is the first suspect when the Home screen works and only that app goes black.

Check the TV's software through Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Some menus call this System update.

Install any available update. Retry the affected app. If it still goes black, use the following removal and reinstall procedure for removable apps on TCL Roku TVs.

Highlight the app on the Home screen. Press Star (*). Select Remove app or Remove channel. Restart the TV using the system restart path above.

Open Streaming Store. Locate the app. Install it again. Sign in if prompted.

Factory-reset the TV using its physical controls

A factory reset clears saved configuration and sign-ins; it cannot repair failed display hardware.

Identify the physical controls on your TV to choose the matching procedure below. These are buttons on the TV itself, not the handheld remote.

For a TCL Roku TV with a recessed RESET button, locate it on the connector panel. Use a straightened paperclip to hold RESET for approximately 12 seconds. Release it when the reset cycle starts or the indicator changes. TCL notes that some models respond closer to 10 seconds.

For a Roku-branded Pro Series TV, hold the physical Power and Find My Remote buttons together for 12 seconds, following Roku's factory-reset instructions. For a Roku-branded Plus or Select Series TV with a pinhole Reset button, hold it for 12 seconds. On Plus or Select models without that button but with the physical Power and Find My Remote pair, hold both together for 12 seconds.

Turn the TV on if necessary after the reset. Keep a physical remote ready for setup after the TV loses its saved network configuration. Complete Guided Setup when the picture returns.

If the menus become usable before you perform a hardware reset, open Home > Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Factory reset everything instead. Enter the code displayed on the TV. It changes between reset attempts, so fixed blind-navigation button sequences cannot replace reading the code. Select OK.

Try Recovery Mode for persistent startup failures

Recovery Mode erases data and reinstalls Roku software on supported TVs. Entering it doesn't require the settings menu, but finishing it requires a visible recovery screen. Not every model supports it.

With the TV powered, hold its physical Reset button for at least 20 seconds. This longer hold is a recovery procedure, not a universal factory-reset instruction.

Release the button when Recovery Mode appears. Select a language. Select Wireless. Connect to your Wi-Fi network.

Choose Update now. Allow the software installation to finish. Complete setup when prompted.

If no Recovery Mode screen appears after about 30 seconds, contact the TV manufacturer. Also contact the manufacturer if the screen remains black across Home and all inputs after restarting. On an LCD TV, report any faint image visible under a flashlight so support can assess a backlight fault that a reset cannot repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my TV has no RESET button or remote-finder button?

For models without RESET and without the Power and remote-finder button pair, the Roku TV 15.0 guide specifies holding the TV's physical POWER button for 10 seconds. Confirm that your model's instructions specify this reset method before using it.

Why do Roku's instructions give both five-second and 12-second reset timings?

Roku's factory-reset instructions specify 12 seconds for the physical Power and Find My Remote button combination. Its separate no-picture instructions give at least five seconds for Pro Series. Roku has not reconciled those instructions; the procedure above follows the dedicated factory-reset page.

Can I reset only the picture and audio settings?

Yes, on TVs offering that option and with a usable interface. Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Reset TV audio/picture settings. Press PLAY/PAUSE three times consecutively to confirm. This resets picture and audio configuration rather than the entire TV.

Does removing the TV from my Roku account reset it?

No. Account removal is separate from a factory reset and does not repair a black screen. Removing the TV also does not cancel Roku-billed subscriptions.
