You archived an Instagram post and now it is missing from your profile. For a feed post you archived, Show on profile brings back the original post with its likes and comments intact. Stories, saved media, account downloads, and public reposts use different Instagram controls, so pick the route that matches the content you want to publish again.

Restore an archived feed post to your profile

This fixes a feed post you archived and want visible on your profile again.

Open the Instagram app.

Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.

Tap Menu in the top right.

Open Your activity.

Tap Archived.

Tap Stories archive at the top.

Choose Posts archive.

Select the post you want to bring back.

Tap Options in the top right.

Tap Show on profile.

Find the right archive first

Open the Instagram app.

Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.

Tap Menu in the top right.

Go to Your activity.

Open Archived.

Tap Stories archive at the top of the screen.

Choose Stories archive, Posts archive, or Live archive for the type of archived content you need.

Pick Posts archive for old feed posts, because that is where Show on profile appears.

Reshare an archived Story

Use this when the content you want to repost was originally an Instagram Story. Sharing it again creates a new Story or direct share; it does not restore the expired Story with its original viewers or likes.

Go to your profile.

Open Menu.

Tap Archive.

Select the archived Story you want to share again.

Tap Share at the bottom of the screen.

Choose Your story, or choose the people you want to share it with directly.

Keep a Story on your profile as a Highlight

The most common cause is that you are reposting an old Story when the better fit is a Highlight that stays on your profile.

Go to your Instagram profile.

Find Story Highlights below your bio.

Tap + or New.

Select the archived Stories you want to include.

Tap Next.

To change the cover image, tap Edit Cover.

Enter a Highlight name.

Tap Add on iPhone or Done on Android.

Save archived Story media and upload it fresh

Use this route when archived Story media needs to become a brand-new post, Reel, or Story.

  1. 1.Open the Instagram app, go to your profile, tap Menu, then open Archive.
  2. 2.Select the archived Story that contains the photo or video you want to reuse.
  3. 3.Tap Options in the bottom right.
  4. 4.Choose Save photo or Save video.
  5. 5.Use Create or + to make a new Instagram post, Reel, or Story from your phone gallery.

Download Instagram media that is not on your phone

The most common cause is that the original media is no longer saved locally, so you need to download available Instagram account media first.

Go to your profile in the Instagram app.

Open Menu.

Tap Meta Account, shown as Accounts Center on accounts that have not switched over yet.

Open Your information and permissions.

Tap Export your information.

Tap Create export.

Select the Instagram profile you want to export from, then tap Next.

Choose Export to device.

Select the information you need, then set Date range, Media quality, and File format.

Tap Start export.

On the web, open Instagram.com.

Open More.

Open Settings.

Open Meta Account, or Accounts Center if your account still shows the older name.

Follow Your information and permissions to use the same Export your information flow.

Use the exported files for available media; this flow is not a recovery path for deleted or unavailable content.

Repost it with Instagram's repost button

Use this after the content is public and eligible again. Instagram's native repost button works for public reels and feed posts; it does not repost hidden archived content directly.

For an archived feed post, restore it with Show on profile first.

Open the public reel or feed post you want to repost.

Tap the repost icon.

To add text, tap the thought bubble by your profile picture.

Tap Save.

Allow others to repost your public posts and reels

Open the Instagram app.

Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.

Tap Menu in the top right.

Go to Sharing and reuse under How others can interact with you.

Turn Reposts on posts and reels on or off.

This setting controls other people's native repost access after your content is public and eligible; it does not restore archived content.

Update Instagram when Archive or repost options are missing

This fixes missing archive or repost controls tied to an outdated app; the discontinued standalone IGTV app and old third-party repost workflows are not current Instagram fixes.

On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store.

Search for Instagram.

Open Instagram by Instagram, Inc.

Tap Get, Open, or Update.

On Android, open the Google Play Store.

Search for Instagram.

Open Instagram by Instagram.

Tap Install, Open, or Update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does showing an archived Instagram post create a new post?

No. Show on profile restores the original archived feed post with its original likes and comments.

Can I repost an archived Story as a normal feed post?

Yes. Save the archived Story with Save photo or Save video, then upload that saved media as a new post, Reel, or Story.

Can I post an archived live broadcast again?

Yes, but it goes back out as a reel. Open Archive, tap Stories archive at the top, choose Live archive, select the broadcast, then tap Share to publish it as a reel. It does not restart the original live broadcast.

Why do I only see Stories archive instead of Posts archive?

Tap Stories archive at the top of the archive screen, then choose Posts archive. That selector also switches to Live archive.

Can another account repost my archived post before I restore it?

No. The native repost button works for eligible public reels and feed posts, so an archived post has to be shown on your profile and be eligible first.

How do I save future Stories to archive?

Go to Profile, Menu, Your activity, then Archived. Tap Options in the top right, open Settings, and turn on Save story to archive. This affects future Stories only.
