An unwanted page break in Google Docs pushes your text onto another page and leaves empty space behind. The fix depends on what's causing the jump: an inserted break, paragraph formatting, or automatic pagination. Start with the keyboard fix below, or jump to Pageless if you want continuous scrolling.
Delete a page break on your computer
Use this method for a manually inserted page break in a document using Pages format. You'll need editing access. Place your cursor immediately after the page break, at the beginning of the text that follows it.
Press Backspace on Windows or ChromeOS, or Delete on Mac, checking after each press so you stop before deleting surrounding text. Just inserted the break? Press Ctrl+Z on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+Z on Mac. This undoes the preceding edit, not every break in the document.
Reveal a break you cannot find
On your computer, choose View > Show non-printing characters to reveal formatting markers. Page-break markers appear in blue.
Place your cursor at the beginning of the text immediately after the blue page-break marker. Then press Backspace on Windows or ChromeOS, or Delete on Mac, checking after each press.
Choose View > Show non-printing characters again to hide the markers. Hiding them does not delete breaks. If the page jump remains, check the paragraph's Add page break before setting using the paragraph-formatting instructions below.
Remove a manual break on your phone or tablet
Open the document in the Google Docs app on Android, iPhone, or iPad. This method applies to documents in Pages format.
Tap Edit, then tap immediately below the page break to position your cursor. Press the keyboard's backward-delete key on Android, or Delete on iPhone and iPad, to remove the break. Check the surrounding text after each press so you keep the content you want.
Stop a paragraph from starting on a new page
The Add page break before setting forces a paragraph onto a new page, even without an inserted break character. On your computer, click inside the affected paragraph, or select the affected paragraphs.
Open Format > Line & paragraph spacing. Deselect Add page break before if it is enabled. This changes paragraph formatting in documents using Pages format.
Turn off paragraph page breaks in the app
This fixes page jumps caused by Add page break before in mobile documents using Pages format. Open your document in Google Docs on Android, iPhone, or iPad, then tap Edit.
Open More and turn on Print layout. Next, double-tap the affected paragraph.
Open Format > Paragraph. Turn off Add page break before.
Close gaps caused by paragraph and page settings
Automatic pagination and paragraph spacing leave gaps that look like unwanted page breaks. On your computer, select the affected paragraphs. Open Format > Line & paragraph spacing.
Check Keep with next, Keep lines together, and Prevent single lines. These controls require Pages format. Disable an enabled option if its behavior is causing the unwanted page jump.
For excess space before or after a paragraph, open Custom spacing from the same menu. Reduce the before and after spacing values. Click Apply.
To change how much text fits on a page, open File > Page setup > Pages. Adjust Margins, Paper size, or Orientation to suit your document. Click OK. These settings change text flow and automatic page boundaries; inserted page breaks stay in place.
Switch to Pageless for continuous scrolling
For continuous scrolling on your computer, choose Format > Switch to Pageless format. The alternative is File > Page setup, where you select Pageless and click OK.
On Android, open your document and tap Edit > More > Page setup, then turn on Pageless. On iPhone or iPad, tap More > Page setup and turn on Pageless.
Pageless changes the layout so you can scroll without page boundaries. It does not guarantee permanent deletion of every manual break.
To restore pages on your computer, choose Format > Switch to Pages format. Headers, footers, and watermarks hidden by Pageless return when you restore Pages.
Hide page gaps while keeping Pages format
This hides page outlines and gaps in the editing view without deleting breaks or changing printed pagination. On your computer, open View, then deselect Show print layout.
On Android, iPhone, or iPad, open More in your document. Turn off Print layout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove all page breaks in Google Docs at once?
Google does not document a built-in Remove all page breaks command or a Find and replace pattern for deleting break objects. Bulk removal requires custom automation rather than an ordinary menu command.
Can I make Pageless the default for new documents?
Yes. On your computer, open File > Page setup. Select Pageless. Click Set as default, then OK. This applies to new documents you create; existing documents keep their settings.
Is a section break the same as a page break?
No. Section breaks divide a document into sections and control section formatting. Identify the type of break before changing it.
Can I remove a page break with Docs voice typing?
Google documents no dedicated page-break-removal voice command. The voice command “Delete” removes the preceding word, so use the keyboard method to remove a manual page break.
