Recover deleted WhatsApp photos on Android by retrieving a surviving copy, restoring the image from your photo app’s Trash or restoring a WhatsApp backup made before deletion. If you just chose Delete for me on the photo message, tap Undo within five seconds. Before reinstalling WhatsApp, save any surviving images and confirm that a usable backup exists.
The short version
- Start with copies: Try downloading the photo from its message or asking another participant to resend it.
- Check Trash: Look in the photo or file app that deleted the image before its recovery window expires.
- Protect your backup: A fresh WhatsApp cloud backup replaces the previous one, so do not create one just to recover deleted photos.
- Restore carefully: A backup made before deletion can bring photos back if it contains them, but restoring it replaces newer chat history.

Try the conversation and ask for another copy
Open the WhatsApp conversation and tap the photo, then tap Download, represented by the downward arrow. This works only while WhatsApp can still supply the attachment. An old photo message does not guarantee that its image remains downloadable.
Ask the sender or another participant to send the photo again if downloading fails. Deleting your own copy does not delete the other person’s chat copy, so this is especially useful after deleting a message or conversation only for yourself. The other person must still possess the image.
For several photos, ask another participant to open the conversation on Android and select More options > More > Export chat. Ask them to tap Include media and choose a sharing destination so you can obtain the attached photos. Only available recent media is included, and you cannot import the exported conversation back into WhatsApp. Export is blocked when the conversation uses Advanced chat privacy or its replacement, Restricted chat, so ask for the photos to be resent instead.
Look for photos still saved on your phone
In Google Photos, open Collections > On this device and inspect the WhatsApp image folder. Check other folders containing saved copies, too. A local image can remain even when its chat entry is missing.
On Samsung Galaxy phones, use the file manager to inspect Internal storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Images. Open any surviving photo and copy it somewhere safe. Folder access can vary by file manager, and browsing this location cannot undelete an absent file.
When images are missing only from the gallery, open WhatsApp and select More options > Settings > Chats, then turn on Media visibility. Check the gallery again. This setting affects visibility and future saving behavior; it does not restore deleted image files.
For a conversation with its own visibility setting, open the chat and tap its name, then select Media visibility. If it is set to No, change it and tap OK. A conversation’s setting can differ from the app-wide setting, but changing it does not recreate deleted photos.
A .nomedia file can also hide surviving images from the gallery. Using a file manager that displays hidden files, inspect the WhatsApp image folder and delete only that marker if you want its existing photos visible. Continue to Trash recovery if the image files themselves are missing.
Restore images from photo and file app Trash
Start with the app you used to delete the photo. In Google Photos, open Collections > Trash, touch and hold the image, then tap Restore. Act while the deletion is less than 30 days old; recovery requires the image to remain in Trash without having been permanently deleted.
For files deleted through Files by Google, open Menu > Trash, select the images and tap Restore, then tap Restore again. Files remain there for 30 days on installations with the Trash feature. Files removed through the Junk files card bypass Trash.
On Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets whose Gallery app has Trash, open Gallery > Menu > Trash. Touch and hold the image, select any additional photos and tap Restore within the 30-day retention period. To restore everything, tap All, then tap Restore all.
For files moved into Samsung’s file manager recycle bin, open My Files, then select Recycle bin > Edit. Select the files and tap Restore. This requires the deleted files to remain in the supported recycle bin.
On Xiaomi phones with this Gallery interface, open Gallery > Albums > Recently deleted items, touch and hold the photos and tap Restore. Xiaomi allows up to 30 days for items that were not backed up. On Huawei devices whose Gallery app offers it, open Gallery > Albums > Recently deleted, touch and hold to select the photos, then touch the restore icon within 30 days.
Find a surviving Google Photos copy
Check the Google Account selected under your Google Photos profile picture before searching for cloud copies. Open a surviving photo, then select More > Download to save it back to Android. The Download option is absent when the image is already on your device.
Archived photos are hidden from the main view rather than deleted. Open Collections > Archive, select the photo and choose More > Unarchive.
On Android 6 or later, check Collections > Locked and unlock it using your device screen lock if your device and account support Locked Folder. This feature is unavailable on fully managed devices and some account types. Photos permanently deleted from Locked Folder cannot be recovered through Trash.
If your Google Photos interface includes photo stacks and app-content controls, open a photo stack, then select Thumbnail menu > Manage settings. Turn on Show content from other apps, then under Content, open Customize by app > WhatsApp > Show all. This reveals surviving content hidden from the main photo view.
Check exports and other saved copies
Look for an earlier chat export saved on your phone or sent by email. If it is a ZIP containing actual photo attachments, open it in Files by Google, tap Extract, then tap Done, leaving the optional archive-deletion checkbox unselected. The extracted files appear beside the ZIP; a text-only transcript cannot recreate missing images.
A computer may hold an independently downloaded copy, so inspect the destination where you previously saved WhatsApp photos. You can also open an available photo in a linked WhatsApp Web conversation, click Download and click Save if prompted. Transfer the resulting image back to Android.
For an existing OneDrive copy, open its folder in List view on Android, tap More beside the image and select Save. Under Save to this location, choose a device folder and tap Save. Samsung’s former Gallery sync with OneDrive integration ended on September 30, 2026, so retrieve surviving cloud photos through OneDrive instead.
Separately uploaded images may also remain in cloud recycle bins. Sign in to OneDrive’s website, open Recycle bin, select the photos and choose Restore; personal-account retention is normally 30 days. For individual images uploaded to Google Drive, open its website, select Trash, right-click the image and select Restore within its 30-day window.
Restore a WhatsApp backup from before deletion
Use backup restoration only after checking surviving copies and establishing that the available backup predates the deletion and contains the photos. Do not make a fresh backup for this task: each new Google Account backup replaces the previous one. Your Google Account stores only one WhatsApp backup per phone number, so you cannot pick an older backup version.
Before removing the installed app, preserve surviving image files and confirm backup availability. Check the selected account under More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Google Account. Restoring the older backup replaces newer chat history on the destination, and the histories cannot be merged.
Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp using the official Android download page, or install it on your replacement Android phone. Register the same phone number and use the same Google Account as the backup. When WhatsApp offers your backup during setup, choose to restore it, then complete setup and allow media restoration to finish.
An end-to-end encrypted backup requires its password or 64-digit encryption key, or authentication with its saved passkey when offered. Passkey authentication uses your fingerprint, face or screen lock and requires Android 9 or later, Google Mobile Services version 241217000 or later, and a configured screen lock. WhatsApp cannot unlock the backup for you without the required credential.
Fix missing photos after restoring a backup
Chats can return before their photos finish downloading. Leave the phone connected while media restoration continues; Google advises allowing up to 24 hours for old images. Contact WhatsApp support if they still have not appeared after that period.
When a usable backup fails to restore, check WhatsApp’s Photos and videos permission and confirm the intended Google Account in its backup settings. WhatsApp specifies Allow, but Android permission wording varies by system version and manufacturer. Restart the phone and retry with a stable connection and adequate free storage.
The restore prompt appears during initial setup, rather than inside Chat backup settings. Repeating restoration cannot recover photos absent from the backup. Check other saved copies if the backup did not contain the images you need.
Consider recovery scans as a last attempt
If the images were stored on a removable, readable SD card, stop writing to that card and connect it to a computer through a card reader. Download and extract the appropriate package from the official PhotoRec download page. These steps apply to image data on that card; they do not cover a phone connected through MTP or encrypted adopted storage.
Run PhotoRec, select the card with ↑ or ↓ and press Enter. Select the relevant partition, choose Search and choose Other for FAT or exFAT. Choose the scan scope and a destination on another drive, confirm the destination with Y, then inspect the recovered images.
For a limited scan on a compatible Android device, obtain the app through the official DiskDigger Android page and tap Start basic photo scan. Select useful results and tap Recover, saving through another app or to separate storage. DiskDigger says a non-root scan can return cached, lower-resolution images and may list files that were never deleted, so original-photo recovery is not guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Google extract one photo from my WhatsApp backup?
Google cannot extract or restore messages or photos from the encrypted WhatsApp backup file. Recovering a separately uploaded image from Google Drive is different from restoring WhatsApp’s backup.
Can I recover an opened view-once photo from a backup?
Opened view-once photos cannot be restored from WhatsApp backups. Unopened view-once media can be included in a backup, subject to WhatsApp’s expiry rules.
Can WhatsApp Web restore my deleted chat history?
WhatsApp does not support restoring chat history through linked Web, Mac or Windows clients. Online-device deletions synchronize, so a linked client should not be treated as an untouched backup.
What if I forgot my encrypted backup password but still have my chats?
On the accessible Android installation, open More > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup > Change password. Tap I forgot my password and create a replacement password. This manages the backup credential; it is not a bypass for a lost backup or a reason to overwrite a valuable backup made before deletion.
Can I still recover photos through Xiaomi Cloud Gallery?
For Xiaomi Accounts outside mainland China, the global Gallery cloud migration and download window closed in 2023. Check copies previously transferred to Google Photos or downloaded locally.
Will installing Files by Google bring back photos deleted in another app?
A new installation cannot retroactively create a Trash history for files deleted elsewhere. Its Trash recovery applies to files that were actually moved into that app’s Trash.
