Without an external mouse, moving around Roblox is only part of the problem: you also need to control the camera, select menus, and use items. Your laptop's keyboard and built-in trackpad cover those inputs in experiences that support them. Start with that combination, then use the camera shortcuts, touchscreen controls, or controller options below to match the way your experience plays.
Start with your keyboard and trackpad
Use W, A, S, and D to move your character in experiences using Roblox's default desktop controls.
Press Space to jump.
Move your finger across the trackpad to position the pointer.
Click or tap to select.
On a Windows 11 laptop, use a two-finger tap or a press in the touchpad's lower-right corner to right-click. Supported gestures depend on your touchpad.
On a MacBook, open System Settings > Trackpad > Secondary click.
Choose Click with Two Fingers to configure that right-click gesture.
On a compatible Chromebook running Roblox's Android app, press or tap the touchpad with two fingers to right-click. The Android app does not guarantee desktop camera behavior; the experience determines which inputs work.
If movement works but the camera is difficult to control, try the keyboard camera shortcuts below. If a gameplay action still fails, press Esc and open Help to check the supported inputs.
Move the camera with keyboard shortcuts
Press the Left or Right Arrow key to rotate the camera in a desktop experience using Roblox's default controls.
Press I to zoom in.
Press O to zoom out.
Use the Up or Down Arrow key to move forward or backward as an alternative to W and S.
To enter first person with the standard Classic camera, zoom fully inward using I. The developer's camera and zoom restrictions determine whether first person is available.
Tip: Check the experience's instructions when a key behaves differently from these default Windows and Mac bindings.
Steady the camera when trackpad movement feels awkward
A brief right-click tap does not provide the held right button that Roblox's Classic camera needs for rotation.
For Classic camera rotation, maintain a secondary-button press while moving on the trackpad. Use a sustained press supported by your hardware.
To reduce manual camera movement, press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
Open Settings.
Select Follow for the camera mode. The camera follows changes in your avatar's movement direction. This option requires an experience that allows camera-mode changes.
For Shift Lock in an experience that permits it, enable Shift Lock Switch in Settings.
Return to the experience.
Press Shift to toggle mouse lock.
Use the trackpad for pointer movement. Shift Lock does not supply missing click or action controls.
Navigate menus without reaching for the pointer
Keyboard UI navigation handles selection in supported interfaces.
Press backslash (\) to enter UI selection mode.
Use the arrow keys or W, A, S, and D to move between selectable controls.
Press Enter to activate the selected control.
Press backslash again to exit UI selection mode.
If backslash does not enable navigation, press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
Open Settings using your trackpad.
Enable UI Navigation Toggle. This allows backslash to enter and exit navigation mode, subject to the developer's interface-navigation restrictions.
Switch to touchscreen controls on compatible laptops
A touchscreen offers another way to play when the experience provides usable touch controls. On touch-capable Windows laptops and compatible touchscreen Chromebooks, availability depends on device detection and the experience.
Use the experience's virtual thumbstick to move your character.
Tap its virtual jump button to jump.
Drag on the screen to move the camera.
Pinch to adjust the zoom.
Tap the supported on-screen actions for other gameplay inputs. A touchscreen alone does not guarantee that every experience provides the controls you need.
Check the controls when an item will not activate
Equipping an item does not activate it, and custom gameplay actions have their own input requirements.
Press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
Open Help to inspect keyboard shortcuts and other supported inputs.
Check the experience's additional instructions for its action controls.
Use number keys 0 through 9 to equip tools when the experience enables the inventory features.
Press backtick (`) to toggle the backpack.
Press Backspace to drop the equipped tool when that feature is enabled. These inventory shortcuts do not replace a tool's required activation input.
Connect a controller for movement and camera control
A compatible gamepad provides movement and camera control on Windows and Mac when Roblox recognizes it and the experience supports it. Roblox's default controls assign movement to the primary thumbstick and the camera to the secondary thumbstick. Press the secondary thumbstick to change zoom.
For Bluetooth pairing on a Mac, put the controller into its manufacturer's pairing mode. Some controllers also connect through a USB cable that supports data and charging.
Open Bluetooth settings on the Mac.
Select the controller from nearby devices. The experience's controller prompts identify its additional actions. Complete support depends on whether the experience supplies controller inputs for all the actions you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does CameraToggle let me look around without holding right-click?
Yes, when CameraToggle is active. Right-click once with the trackpad to make pointer movement control free look, then right-click again to return to Classic behavior. If your Roblox Settings menu lists CameraToggle as a camera mode, you can select it there; developers can lock the camera mode, and CameraToggle works only on computers.
Does launching Roblox from its website let me play in the browser?
No. On supported Windows and Mac installations, selecting Play on the website launches Roblox Player. It is not browser-only gameplay.
Can Windows Mouse keys replace my trackpad?
Windows 11 Mouse keys provides pointer movement, clicks, and button holds through a usable numeric keypad. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse. Enable Mouse keys. This controls the Windows pointer; its acceptance and camera behavior in Roblox depend on the experience.
Can I install Roblox on a school Chromebook?
Compatible Chromebooks support Roblox's Android app through Google Play. School policies determine whether Android app installation and Roblox are allowed; input settings do not change those restrictions.
