Bookmarks pile up quickly when saved pages land in the wrong folder, crowd the toolbar, or sit on a device you no longer use. Firefox gives you built-in ways to move a single bookmark, rearrange a folder, organize mobile bookmarks, sync them, or transfer them with a file. Start with the desktop Library if you are cleaning up more than one saved page.

Move a bookmark to another folder on desktop

Use the Bookmarks Library when a saved page needs to move from one Firefox folder to another on Windows, macOS, or Linux.

  1. 1.Open the Firefox menu, choose Bookmarks, then select Manage bookmarks.
  2. 2.Click the folder that currently holds the bookmark.
  3. 3.Find the bookmark in the Library window.
  4. 4.Drag the bookmark over the destination folder.
  5. 5.Release it to move the bookmark into that folder.

Rearrange bookmarks inside the same folder

When a bookmark already sits in the right folder but appears in the wrong spot, open the Firefox menu, choose Bookmarks, then select Manage bookmarks.

Click the folder that contains the bookmark. Drag the bookmark to the position you want inside that folder.

Press Ctrl + Shift + O on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + O on macOS, to open the same Library window faster. Ctrl + Shift + B and Command + Shift + B show or hide the Bookmarks Toolbar in current Firefox.

Change one bookmark location with the star

The address-bar star is the quickest option when you are already on the page you bookmarked. Open the bookmarked page, then click the blue star in the address bar again.

In Edit bookmark, use Location to choose a folder such as Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar. Choose Choose… when you need to see all bookmark folders or create a new one, then click Save.

You can also open the same edit box from the keyboard by pressing Ctrl + D on Windows or Linux, or Command + D on macOS.

If this method fails, open Firefox menu > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks and move the bookmark by dragging it instead.

Fix bookmarks that will not stay sorted

The most common cause is using a Library sort view, which changes what you see without permanently moving bookmarks.

To make an alphabetical order stick, open the Firefox menu, choose Bookmarks, then select Manage bookmarks. Right-click the folder you want to sort, or Control-click it on macOS, and choose Sort By Name.

That permanent sort applies to the selected folder and appears in the sidebar, menu, and bookmark button areas.

For a temporary view only, select the folder in the Library, click Views, choose Sort, then pick a sort order. That view-only sort does not move or permanently reorder the bookmarks.

Organize bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar

The toolbar has its own drag-and-drop behavior, but show it first if it is hidden.

  1. 1.Open the Firefox menu, choose More tools, then select Customize Toolbar….
  2. 2.Open Toolbars, choose Bookmarks Toolbar, then select Always Show.
  3. 3.Click Done.
  4. 4.Click and hold a bookmark or folder on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
  5. 5.Drag it into the position you want, then release it.

Put the current page on the toolbar

This fixes the case where the page you are viewing belongs directly on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Set the Bookmarks Toolbar to Always Show.

Open the page you want to save there.

Drag the padlock icon from the address bar onto the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Edit bookmark folders on Android or iPhone

On Firefox for Android, open the three-dot menu and tap Bookmarks. Find the bookmark, tap the three-dot menu next to it, choose Edit, tap Folder, select an existing folder, then tap the back arrow until you return to browsing.

To move an Android bookmark into a new folder, go through Bookmarks > Edit > Folder, tap the plus sign, enter a folder name, tap the plus sign again, then return with the back arrow. Android also has a bookmark sort icon with custom order, newest, oldest, A to Z, and Z to A options, but manual custom ordering is managed on Firefox desktop and synced.

On Firefox for iOS, tap the menu, choose Bookmarks, and go to the folder where the bookmark or folder is located. Tap Edit Bookmark, tap the bookmark or folder, browse to the folder where you want it to live, then tap Save.

Send bookmarks to another Firefox device

Firefox Sync carries bookmark changes across Firefox installations signed in with the same Mozilla account. It moves your organized bookmarks between computers or between desktop and mobile Firefox, but Mozilla does not describe Sync as a backup service.

On desktop, use the Sign in button in the Firefox toolbar, or open the Firefox menu and choose Sign in. After Sync is enabled, go to Firefox menu > Settings > Sync, or Account and sync > Sync > Manage synced data, and make sure Bookmarks is selected.

On a second computer, open the Firefox menu, choose Sync and save data, and sign in with the same Mozilla account. On Android, use three-dot menu > Settings > your email address to check Bookmarks; on iPhone, use menu > Settings > your email address and turn on Bookmarks.

If this method fails, move the bookmarks with an HTML file when you need to merge them, or use a JSON bookmark backup when you want to restore another Firefox installation and overwrite its existing bookmark set.

Import export or restore bookmarks

To bring bookmarks into Firefox from another installed browser, open the Firefox menu, choose Settings, find Import browser data under General or Account and sync, then click Import Data.

In the Import Wizard, choose the browser, profile, and Bookmarks.

Click Done when the import finishes.

For an HTML bookmarks file, open Firefox menu > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks, then choose Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML….

Select the HTML file and open it.

To move Firefox bookmarks out as an HTML file, use Firefox menu > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML….

Save the file, then import it in the destination browser or Firefox profile.

For a Firefox-to-Firefox restore with a JSON file, use Import and Backup > Backup… on the source Firefox.

On the destination Firefox, use Import and Backup > Restore > Choose File…, select the backup, and confirm.

Restoring from JSON overwrites the destination bookmark set, so HTML import is the better choice when you want to merge bookmarks.

On school or work-managed Firefox, managed bookmarks are controlled by the organization and cannot be edited by the user.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drag bookmarks between folders in Firefox?

Yes. On desktop, open Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks, select the folder that contains the bookmark, then drag it to the destination folder.

Why did sorting not actually move my Firefox bookmarks?

Library views can sort what you see without permanently reordering bookmarks. To make an alphabetical change stick, right-click the folder in Manage bookmarks and choose Sort By Name.

Can I manually reorder bookmarks in Firefox for Android?

Firefox for Android offers sorting options, but manual custom ordering is done on Firefox desktop and then synced.

Should I use Sync or export a file to move Firefox bookmarks?

Use Sync to carry bookmark changes across signed-in Firefox devices. Use HTML export or import when moving bookmarks through a file, especially when merging into another browser or profile.
