Your avatar needs to move, your camera needs to turn, and a laptop trackpad makes those two jobs feel different. Roblox’s standard controls let you move with WASD, jump with Space, and look around without an external mouse. Start with those keys, then adjust the camera and movement settings available in your experience.
Start moving with WASD
These controls get your avatar moving in Windows and Mac experiences that use standard keyboard movement.
Hold W to move forward.
Hold S to move backward.
Hold A to move left.
Hold D to move right.
Release the movement key to stop.
Press Space to jump in an experience that allows jumping.
Press Space while holding a movement key to jump while moving.
Hold Up Arrow to move forward if you prefer the arrow keys.
Hold Down Arrow to move backward. Left Arrow and Right Arrow rotate the camera; they do not provide default sideways movement.
Get the camera into a comfortable position
Hold the right mouse button while moving the mouse to rotate the standard third-person camera.
On a trackpad, hold its configured secondary-click gesture while moving a finger to rotate your view. The gesture depends on your laptop’s hardware and system settings.
Press Left Arrow or Right Arrow to rotate the camera around your avatar using the keyboard.
Scroll the mouse wheel to adjust the zoom within the experience’s allowed range.
Press I to zoom in using the keyboard.
Press O to zoom out.
Zoom fully inward to enter first-person view in an experience that allows it.
Move the mouse to look around in first person.
Zoom outward to return to third person in an experience that permits that view.
For a different camera behavior, press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
Select Settings.
Under Camera Mode, choose Classic for manual rotation or Follow for a camera that adjusts as your avatar changes direction. The creator determines which choices appear.
Use I and O when you want to adjust zoom without a trackpad scrolling gesture.
When holding right-click on a trackpad is awkward
A brief right-click selects a destination in Click to Move. Standard third-person camera dragging needs a sustained right-click hold instead.
On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad > Taps.
Enable Tap with two fingers to right-click or Press the lower right corner of the touchpad to right-click, whichever your laptop offers. A tap supplies a click; camera dragging still requires a supported click-and-hold gesture.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Touchpad to access the touchpad settings.
Use a two-finger tap or a press in the lower-right corner to right-click on a compatible Windows 10 touchpad.
On a Mac, open System Settings > Trackpad > Secondary click.
Choose a supported secondary-click gesture.
Use that gesture for Roblox’s right-click actions.
If holding secondary click remains difficult, press Esc to open Roblox’s menu.
Open Settings > Camera Mode.
Select CameraToggle in an experience that offers it.
Close the menu.
Right-click once to enter free look.
Move the mouse or your finger on the trackpad to look around.
Right-click again to exit free look.
If CameraToggle is unavailable or does not resolve the problem, use Left Arrow or Right Arrow to rotate the standard third-person camera.
Choose keyboard movement and optional Shift Lock
This sets keyboard movement and enables mouse lock where the experience allows those choices.
Press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
Select Settings.
Open Movement Mode.
Select Default (Keyboard) or Keyboard + Mouse when offered. Default uses keyboard-and-mouse movement behavior; displayed labels vary by client and language.
For Shift Lock, set Shift Lock Switch to On in an experience that supports it.
Return to play.
Press Shift to toggle mouse lock. Its behavior depends on the experience’s camera scripts, and creators control which movement and camera options players can select.
Move to a destination with a click
Where offered, Click to Move sends your avatar toward a reachable spot, with automatic jumps over manageable obstacles; creators control its availability and can enforce this mode.
- 1.Press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
- 2.Select Settings.
- 3.Open Movement Mode.
- 4.Select Click to Move.
- 5.Close the menu.
- 6.Briefly right-click a reachable destination.
Items and interactions use their own controls
These controls apply to experiences using Roblox’s standard backpack, tools, or interaction prompts. Custom actions follow the creator’s assigned keys.
Equip an item by clicking its inventory-slot icon or pressing the number shown on that slot.
Left-click to activate the equipped tool. The tool determines what happens.
Press Backspace to drop the equipped tool when dropping is permitted.
Open the upper-left hamburger menu.
Select Inventory to view the standard backpack. The Backquote key also toggles it.
Drag an item into a different slot to change its assigned hotkey.
Approach a door, switch, or other object with an interaction prompt.
Press or hold the key displayed in the prompt for the required duration. Clicking the prompt is an alternative when the creator enables it.
Use the experience’s displayed controls for sprinting, combat, vehicles, and other custom actions. Shift and Ctrl are not universal sprint keys.
Touchscreen and controller alternatives
On a touch-enabled client displaying touch controls, drag the lower-left virtual movement control to move.
Tap the lower-right jump button to jump.
Drag the central play area to rotate the camera.
To change touch movement in a client that offers those settings, open Settings > Movement Mode.
Select an offered thumbstick mode or Tap to Move. Displayed labels vary by client and language.
With Tap to Move selected, tap a reachable destination.
For controller play on Windows or Mac, connect a compatible Xbox or PlayStation controller. The experience must support the controller actions.
Use the left stick to move.
Use the right stick to control the camera.
Press A, or the corresponding bottom face button, to jump in experiences using that standard controller binding.
Use the keyboard or mouse to switch preferred input back from the controller.
On a Chromebook, use the controls exposed by Roblox’s Android app and the experience’s touch support.
If movement keys select buttons instead
Pressing Backslash activates UI navigation where enabled, making movement keys select interface elements.
Press Backslash again to exit UI navigation.
To prevent accidental activation, press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
Select Settings.
Disable UI Navigation Toggle.
When deliberately using UI navigation, press WASD or the arrow keys to select an interface element.
Press Enter to activate the selected element.
Recover from stuck movement or camera trouble
These fixes address a stuck avatar, Windows touchpad suppression, or a malfunctioning Player.
For an avatar stuck in the world, open the upper-left hamburger menu.
Select Respawn, or press R after opening the menu, in an experience that allows respawning.
Confirm with Reset.
If a Windows Precision Touchpad stops responding while you hold movement keys, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad > Taps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
Set Touchpad sensitivity to Most sensitive. This disables Windows’ accidental activation protection to address input suppression; it does not fix every camera problem.
For unfamiliar controls, press Esc to open the Roblox menu.
Select Help to read the built-in keyboard and mouse instructions.
Use the creator’s displayed instructions for experience-specific actions.
Restart Roblox if the Player continues malfunctioning.
Reinstall Roblox if the problem persists. Reinstallation does not override controls enforced by an experience’s creator.
